Here are a few problems I have with my gym :-

People smoking, and regularly
Very small (contains a small ring with 3 bags, and 2 speedballs, there is barely any space espescially for skipping)
no one my age or weight to spar (i'm 15 5ft10, closest a 20 year old who still smaller, next closest a huge cruiserweight about 6ft2)
Only open 4 nights a week, for two hours
Sometimes seriously overcrowded

I love boxing but I don't think I can fulfill any of my potentials at this gym. I've been boxing here for a good while, and all they seem to teach us is the punches, and a few obvious tips about footwork. Is it worth training here, or should I go find one with better facilities? (I might just be nit picking, I dunno do most gyms have all these problems?)

yeah I said to one guy "should you be smoking in a ****ing gym, isn't the whole point of it to gain fitness?" and he said "half the ****in pro boxers in the world smoke" (to which I should of said "half the pro boxers in the world have records of 0-1).

Holy hell. In your other thread I heard say something about a better gym but its farther away. I'd go with that.... I can only go twice a week because I don't have my own car yet and its so far away. But its good quality training and VERY good quality gym. Best in the state infact.

I know if fomebody tried to light a cig in my gym it would be there last day. other than that fact your problems are mute. if you have an apponent that is your weight and skill level it doesnt matter his age. He would be a potential sparring partner. if your not comfy in that gym switc there has to be pleny out there

If its the only gym in your area and you wanna box, then what other choice do you have.

Also, what the hell kinda gym has people smoking in it? Let alone a boxing gym. I've never heard of such a thing.

I agree with him, just work and pay no attn. to all of that nonsense, you can have social hour and meet-and-greets afterwards.

i think it depends on your goals. if you're there to get into competing, then i wouldn't recommend going to a martial arts joint because their approach to fight sports is completely different from boxing. there are a lot of people who are black belts who can't hold their own when it comes to straight boxing. that's not to say that they aren't amazingly talented in their own right, but it's a different thing.

if you're going to compete, i agree with the guy who said that you should find out how many champions they've trained, see if they train the kind of fighters that you want to be (boxers vs. brawler, big v. small guys, etc.), and see if they're willing to take you seriously. if all those things are good, i don't think it matters that much where you work out. boxing joints are always broke down...aren't they?

however, if you're not going to compete you can get a really great workout in a martial arts/mma spot where they might be open more, and the place might be cleaner, etc.

as for sparring, whether you're competing or not, the biggest factor is safety. your coach should protect you by putting you in with people who can control themselves, and it doesn't really matter how large/small they are as long as you're learning and you're not getting unnecessarily hurt all the time. i'm 135, and i've sparred with pros/amateurs 20 pounds heavier/lighter, it doesn't matter. what matters is whether you're learning...

are you looking to fight?

what it is is i had 2 fights i won then i lost the next but I wasn't training properly at all (e.g i'd go for a slow paced jog, do about a round on the bag once in a while do speedbag or skipping then every night spar a few rounds).
