View Full Version : Joe Louis vs. Max Baer
potatoes 10-24-2006, 12:17 PM In his autobiography Joe Louis claims the best performance of his career was against Max Baer. He also mentioned that Baer, despite all his firepower, never really learned his trade as a boxer. You can see on the video that Louis is making him look bad.

Southpaw Stinger 10-24-2006, 12:53 PM Baer had a lot of talen and a deadly punch. Sadly he never took the fight game too seriously and training wasn't one of his main past times.. good fight though between two of my favourites. Thanks for posting.
Dempsey 1919 10-24-2006, 01:13 PM Baer was just unskilled, and Louis took advantage. But I heard that Baer's hands were broken when tey fought, that's why Max couldn't really hurt Louis.

If you look closely you will see Jack Dempsey in Max Baer's corner. Although you can't hear it in the video, Dempsey was threatening to knockout Baer unless he started fighting! He tried to managed Baer's career, but Baer wasn't serious enough to effectively managed.

That's a fair statement. Joe Louis stopped Baer right after Max was upset by Braddock.....originally, it was suppossed to be for the championship.
I'd liken it to Ali's performance against Cleveland Williams. Joe was really on that night, he had to be....if he wasn't , Baer could have taken his head off.
I'm often torn between the Baer fight and the second Schmeling fight as to which Louis looked better. The Baer fight reveals more of his skill because it lasted longer; but the Schmeling fight was as intense as Louis ever was....it's a toss up.
Kid Achilles 10-24-2006, 05:02 PM I think he looked quicker in the Baer fight. Add to it the fact that the steel chinned Baer had better been dropped before and you have an incredible display of power and skill.

I think Louis in the Jack Sharkey fight was quicker than in the Baer fight.

I'll plus one to that, as I have always had that same opinion.

baer had all the natural talent to be a great champion but he spent all his time banging hollywood sluts - i can't really blame the guy for this, i would too

That's like his best pre-prime performance sort of like Cassius Clay against Archie Moore, or Mike Tyson against Marvis Frazier. His best performance IMO as the rematch against Buddy Baer. he weighed nearly 207 in that fight, so he was bigger, stronger, more powerful, and just as fast, since he was only 28 years old.

Yeah you're right.
The rematch with Buddy Baer is right up there too, as far as great performances by Louis goes...Lots of people have the opinion that that was his best, and it may very well have been Louis at the absolute peak of his ability as a fighter. He was impressive as hell in that fight, but it was still an aggressive one-round destruction, which didn't/doesn't nearly show Louis' all-around or overall ability (both offensively & defensively) that he showed against Max...
It's a matter of preference, but these eyes have always been more impressed with the better 'all-around' performance of Louis'.

Well then, Louis-Sharkey, Braddock-Louis, Louis-Baer I, Louis-Simon II, Louis-Carnera, Louis-Godoy II shows Louis' skills so they should be up there, too.
