View Full Version : Prime Joe Louis vs Marciano
Abe Attell 10-23-2006, 02:59 AM Who wins this?
Joe Louis was an old man who was mentally retired when he fought Marciano, but would it make a difference?
Southpaw Stinger 10-23-2006, 09:17 AM I'd back Louis by a late tko or UD. It would still be a tough competitive fight.
OASIS_LAD 10-23-2006, 09:18 AM louis by ud
The Raging Bull 10-23-2006, 09:50 AM This would be an amazing, gruelling fight that would nearly kill both fighters.
I'd have to go with Louis because of his superior boxing skill.
Louis by UD because I don't see anyone knocking the rock out.
Brockton Lip 10-23-2006, 10:04 AM This is a fight I can't seem to figure out.
Louis' suspect chin, lack of movement, and the fact that he hates to be crowded is perfect for Marciano. But Marciano's best punch is his overhand right which could prove to have a difficult time landing accuractely against Louis; not to mention that he may be countered.
Either Marciano by KO or Louis by UD. I don't see Marciano getting stopped, he was too busy and his recuperitave abilities are top notch.

Well, Louis had a knack for knocking people out that were never knocked out before. Max Baer, Braddock, Galento, Buddy Baer, etc. the same thing could happen for Marciano.
have to go with Marciano. I agree with the other poster about Louis having trouble with marciano's crowding style. That evasive angular lean of his would also undermine Louis' jab a bit, and his ability to set up as he would like. Marciano could swarm quickly and then tie up or get out before he got hit with something hard from louis.
Dempsey 1919 10-23-2006, 01:36 PM Marciano could swarm quickly
Never put Marciano and quick in the same sentence, lol!

lol nah, i meant he shouldn't stay inside too long.

The way you put it like he was "dempsey-like" in moving in and out, lol!
hemichromis 10-23-2006, 02:45 PM well marciano has what it takes top bother louis but lous had alot of power and he used his power better than marciano i think he would win by late stoppage or UD
redxl7 10-23-2006, 05:47 PM I'd have to say Marciano because of the point that Louis hated to be swarmed, Louis was past his prime, but most of his power was still there and by no means was he an easy opponent, however his hand speed was gone. But the important thing to remember is that it was a great fight regardless of Louis being past his prime. I think it's cool though that Rocky and Louis became good friends, they both had a lot of respect for each other.
Kid Achilles 10-23-2006, 05:51 PM I think Baer and Galento actually had better chins than Marciano so it would be entirely possibly for Louis to knock him out. I could see Louis KO'ing even Chuvalo or Cobb if a ref didn't step in and stop it. Possible though not probable.
I think Louis would cut Marciano up and stop him in the 10th or 11th round in a rough fight where both men visit the canvas.
phallusy 10-23-2006, 06:01 PM whatever happens, both men are going to the hospital after the fight...i've thought about what this fight would have looked like a lot over the years, it'd be a war. marciano does have one advantage over even the prime louis, his swarming style is perfect against a boxer puncher like louis. the fight can go either one of two ways, louis by ud / tko stoppage or rocco by late stoppage. either way, louis wins all the early rounds, knocking the rock down at least once, probably twice. the rock lands the right hand later, knocking louis down. whoever wins, is the man who wants it more
Bob Anomaly 10-23-2006, 09:13 PM Reminds me of Lewis -Tyson.
It took Rocky about 8 rounds to stop Louis. I think in his prime Louis is just too damn good. Connects with alot of huge shots.
Cuts the shit outa Rockys face.
Ithink if anyone would stop Rocky it would be Louis based on his precise short power punches.
I dont think the Rock was unstoppable.
Louis wins on cuts or late tko.
blockhead 10-23-2006, 09:21 PM i think the greatest heavyweight of all time wins this, joe louis by ud

Well I said he could TIE UP OR get out, in my original post. He could alternate between the two.
Dempsey 1919 10-24-2006, 01:35 PM Anyway, Louis ko in about 11. Marciano could be knocked out, it's not like he had the best chin in boxing history. And Louis is one of the greatest punchers in heavyweight history, so I'd say that rocky gets knocked out in 11.

I love Louis' style of punching, absolute perfection, precision and power. But Joe Louis to me was too easily hit and lacked footwork. Against a hard hitting relentless steel chinned fighter in Marciano, I just do not see Louis lasting the distance. Rocky I think will take Joe's best and land his own bombs which I believe will KO Louis. Rocky is too in your face all te time and Joe's flat footed style will see him getting nailed to often and when it's the Rocks power shots doing the nailing, it's lights out

The only problem is that Rocky's not going to box with louis, and allow him too may opportunities.

rocky would push the fight inside, louis would always be backing up
Derranged 10-25-2006, 10:30 PM Marciano gets stopped on cuts in 8th.
My all time favorite fighter is Rocky Marciano, and I would surely be rooting for him to win this clash. But I don't think he would.
Joe Louis was, in my honest opinion, the greatest heavyweight of all time. An awesome boxer, he also had power, speed, stamina, heart and a decent chin. Marciano had to go close to eight rounds to finish off an ageing Louis, and even lost a couple of rounds along the way. Granted, this was not the Marciano that won and held the title, but a more crude unpolished version. Still, against a well-prepared and prime Joe Louis, Marciano would be defeated.
Louis would be pushed backwards from the everlasting wreckingball that was Marciano. And he did not like to be crowded. But at the same time he would be blocking, feinting and countering Marcianos attacks with ripping shots to the head.
Earlier in this thread someone claimed that Louis still had his power at the time he fought Marciano. Well, no. Speed equals power, as we also saw with Mike Tyson. Louis still had power, sure, but could not produce the same lightening and damaging punches he did in his younger years. He was not even close. Combined with better reflexes, stamina, a better chin and movement, Marciano would be in for a long night.
I see Louis controling this fight, taking some tremendously hard shots in return. A tired, bruised, but focused Louis forces the ref/corner to stop this bout in the later rounds.
Joe Louis by tko12.
