Yogi 10-03-2006, 08:59 PM I've always hated Holmes! I used to hate Holmes when he first won his title and after a few defenses, but that kind of faded for me over time where I'm at the point now where I simply appreciate & respect him as the great fighter he was during his time (still don't like him much as a person, though, from what I know/known...Or maybe I'm kind of nuetral. *shrugs*). Although Butterfly must think I'm a big fan of Holmes' for some reason, as he has sent me some PMs in the past all because he started a Holmes thread and he wanted me to check it out. LondonRingRules 10-03-2006, 10:02 PM Enjoy..... ** Man, it's bad enough that you put together Johnson's best yawners, but making a Holmes thread with Butterbean hurting him and knocking him down, man, you cursed Larry more than Don King did! La_Vibora 10-04-2006, 03:59 PM One of the greatest fights ever! Probably the greatest 15th round in heavyweight history. Both fighters showed alotof heart and you could see that Larry really left it all in that ring that night with how he couldn't even stand anymore. I agree that Larry is definitely underrated big time and doesn't get the respect that he deserves. I think the reasons for this is how he beat up on old Muhammed Ali and then how he disrespected Rocky Marciano with his comment that he couldn't hold his jock strap. While he had one of the best jabs in boxing history, he also had an attitude that rubbed some people the wrong way. hemichromis 10-04-2006, 05:13 PM yet another great, 'greatist hits' thread you dont have a job do you!! Hard Boiled HK 10-05-2006, 08:44 PM I've always hated Holmes! What's wrong with Holmes? Southpaw Stinger 10-06-2006, 10:09 AM What's wrong with Holmes? he's a true bastard. His attitude is comparable to a grumpy teenager. He believes he is the greatest of all time and that his victory against Ali means that he could have beaten him in his prime. He slags of all the old great champions like Marciano saying they are not fit enough to lick his boots. Dempsey 1919 10-06-2006, 01:08 PM he's a true bastard. He slags of all the old great champions like Marciano saying they are not fit enough to lick his boots. He also attacked Trevor berbick in a parking lot... and wanted to start a fight with gerry Cooney! :D Southpaw Stinger 10-06-2006, 02:41 PM The berbick case was pretty funny though! Yogi 10-06-2006, 07:43 PM He believes he is the greatest of all time and that his victory against Ali means that he could have beaten him in his prime. Nothing wrong with a fighter thinking the highest of himself, and if that is one of the criteria used to determine a bastard, then Ali must've been the biggest friggin bastard to have ever walked the face of the earth... When & where did you hear/read Holmes give that much significance to his win over Ali, Stinger? I'm just browsing over Holmes' words in "Facing Ali" and to me it's pretty clear by his words that he doesn't give himself NEARLY the credit that you alluded to. In fact his views on that fight are similiar to anybody else's, and Holmes does call Ali "old" for that fight, makes a distinction between the Ali of 1975 and the one from 1980 (in regards to how much Ali's skills/abilities had depleted in that time), says he was in a "no-win situation" if he beat an old Ali, etc., etc., etc...No where in that book is he giving himself credit for the Ali win, and along with himself, he calls each of Ali, Marciano, Dempsey, Louis "one of the greatest" heavyweights of all-time (that same quote is used for himself, as he considers himself "one of"). Southpaw Stinger 10-06-2006, 09:31 PM No where in that book is he giving himself credit for the Ali win, and along with himself, he calls each of Ali, Marciano, Dempsey, Louis "one of the greatest" heavyweights of all-time (that same quote is used for himself, as he considers himself "one of"). Shortly after his loss to Michael Spinks he got very insultive towards Marciano. He was 48-0 and thought he was about to equal Marciano's record. He later made derogatory remarks towards Marciano and heavies of earlier eras. http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/l/larry_holmes.html A few of his quotes on here are quite disrespectful. Ali may have been the biggest talker in boxing but he always backed up what he said and he always showed respect to Marciano and the like. This one stuck out, You can't put those guys like Marciano or anyone else in with today's class of fighters. When & where did you hear/read Holmes give that much significance to his win over Ali, Stinger? He was doing a tv interview once and the interviewer didn't know much about the background of the fight and asked Holmes somthing like - "And you beat Muhammad Ali didn't you?" Holmes responded in a smug way, "Yep. I was the only guy to ever stop him within the distance" said as though he was proud of his achievement. Hard Boiled HK 10-07-2006, 01:05 AM Nothing wrong with a fighter thinking the highest of himself, and if that is one of the criteria used to determine a bastard, then Ali must've been the biggest friggin bastard to have ever walked the face of the earth... I read that book, too. Holmes said even the 1975 Ali couldn't beat him. He was questioning what makes Ali think he can beat him if he can't do it in 1975. Dempsey 1919 03-04-2007, 01:33 AM bump...... bill1234 03-04-2007, 10:23 AM I used to hate Holmes when he first won his title and after a few defenses, but that kind of faded for me over time where I'm at the point now where I simply appreciate & respect him as the great fighter he was during his time (still don't like him much as a person, though, from what I know/known...Or maybe I'm kind of nuetral. *shrugs*). I know Holmes, he is a great, great guy. But don't piss him off. bill1234 03-04-2007, 10:26 AM Larry's demolition of Marvis Frazier, Cooney, Spinks (leon), and Mercer were all impressive. He showed mercy on Ali. He fought a war with Norton, and he contiuned beating good fighters in the 90's. In 1995 he lost by 1 point on 2 of the scorecards for the WBC title against Olivar McCall. He cut Holyfield in their fight, and he continued fighting and winning until he was 52 years old. |
