Hey guys

Alright, this might seem stupid but believe me I am inspired by movie "Rocky". I never thought I would do boxing in my life, as I always had very least interest in this sport, but after watching Rocky, and some of Mike Tyson "greatest" fights, I do believe that I missed something. Earlier I was a bodybuilder, and I was pretty good at it. I had about 17.5" Inches biceps, 44" Inches Chest & around 25" Inches thighs, and I think for a 5' feet 9" Inches guy, those figures ain't too shabby. But the thing is I left doing exercises from past 4 years, and I haven't even touched weights from last 4 years. Since I am 26 years old (wondering why I didn't watched ROCKY movie way back), I feel like I am toooo old to start Boxing now.

I've been looking all over Internet about basic boxing punches, and it seems I am learning pretty good. I tried doing freehand punches (like Jab, uppercut etc.) continously for about 10 minutes, and BOY I got exhausted within 10 minutes which shows I don't have stamina at all now.

Please don't suggest me to look for a trainer, because I probably won't find it anyway, as I am from INDIA, there's not much Boxing impact here.

Guys, I am willing to learn, please guide me. Your input is highly appreciated.

I know you said not to suggest looking for a trainer, but it's really the way to go. Here's a link of some gyms in India, and hopefully one is reasonably close to you.

Thanks tebe6sm & AzzA :)

Tebe6sm, to be honest I can't really afford a Trainer, I know it is very important to to have Trainer. But really, I am leading a terrible life at the moment. As you can see in my first post, I did mention, that I left doing exercises way back 4 years ago, and the reason was to get a good job. Otherwise I wouldn't have left doing exercises.

AzzA,

Yea, I know 10 minutes is quite lame, but how it is on first day? and especially if you're not invovled in any physical activities. ... vola..imagine being without 4 years :)

Hey guys,

On the second day I feel little more comfortable with the punches, but I think that Uppercut can be difficult for me sometimes. Though, I think I am doing pretty good with Hooks, Jabs & Straight.

Can you guys give me few advice on Uppercut, especially left Uppercut? And kindly tell me how to perform shadow boxing, I mean I try, but I can't able to make moves so quickly...like Jab and hook etc.

Others may think diffrently but i wouldnt be tryin the more advanced stuff right now its only your second day. Focus on the jab and right and hooks if you feel comfortable.
You should also be runnin if you really cant get up in morning or you have other commitments do it later at night or in the middle of the day.
As for only bein able to punch for 10mins thats actualy pretty good seein how you havnt done much in 4years. But you should try timin yourself with a stopwatch. Go for 2-3minute rounds with 1min rest inbetween.

Hey, thanks for the reply Jones :)

Yea, currently my schedule is quite hectic, but I will start running later. On the third day I enjoyed boxing again, I am very comfortable with jabs and straight. But as you said, so I will concentrate more on jabs and straight from now on.

But I think I am quite uncomfortable with left uppercut, even today I tried it but it's just not right. Is left-uppercut quite a difficult move to make for right handers?

Thanks for your helps guys, you've been very nice with me.

I am REALLY enjoying BOXING, I mean hitting the bag ofcourse....

I think I am hitting it HARD...but I feel little pain on the fist ... yes I do wear boxing gloves, but still it hurts...what do you guys think?

And my stamina has increased... I could hit bag for around 45 mins (with 1-2min break)

Well, I am not kidding dude. I am sorry if you think I am ****tin.

Yes, I could hit the bag hard now, and I do like for 45 Mins (with 1-2 min rest in between ofcourse).

You seems to forget that I was bodybuilder few years ago. Did a 300lbs benchpress.

Have you ever lifted 225lbs barbel curls in your entire life?..

prince what are your goals in boxing, most of the guys on here train for competetive boxing you seem to just want to use this to get in shape.

and dont start the bodybuilding vs boxing argument...although its probably too late.

Hey thanks for the reply buddy.

No I am not starting any boxing Vs. bodybuilding argument here, both sports are different and has its own uniqueness. And I am not doing training to fight, as I said I am already 26 years old, and I guess it's a bit too old to start.

It's just I don't get it, if I said I could do it for 45mins with 1-2 min break, whats the problem with it?. Yea I know "Rocky" is just a movie, so what?

Prince_2k
10-12-2006, 04:14 AM
I think Kingdosia got me wrong. Are you guys thinking that I could go continously for 45mins with only ONE 1-2 min break?

I do around 7-8 sets and 1-2 min break after every set.

BODY BUILDING?? TAKE THAT **** TO A BODY BUILDING SITE IT MEANS NOTHING HERE. NOTHING INFACT THAT TYPE OF BACKGROUND WOULD HURT YOUR CHANCES OF BOXING. I WOULDNT WANT TO CURL 225 EVEN IF I COULD. HAVE YOU EVER KO'D A CREDIBLE FIGHTER WITH ONE SHOT? TO THE GUT? OR IN JUST 8 SECONDS OF THE FIRST ROUND. NO BUT YOU CAN SURE WORK YOUR JACK OFF MUSCLE HUH? AND I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU SAY YOU TOLD US YOU GOT WINDED AFTER JUST A FEW PUNCHES. HAVE NO EXPERIENCE AND NOW ALL OF THE SUDDEN YOU CAN GO FOR 8 RNDS WHATEVER

Believe it or not, it's fine with me.

And I am done with you. You got serious attitude problem, rectify your issues and be nice with people on forums, I didn't attacked your words or nothing I said to hurt your feelings. You've highly inflated ego, which is definately your negative point.

Yes, 7-9 sets, 45 mins, 1-2 mins rest in between, and that's how I do it. And if you've got any problem with this, then stay away from my thread, and don't even look at it. I truly don't admire person like you.

Boxing is best learned from a qualified trainer. Learning from books or boxing forums is a rather dubious process. I don't know if there are many qualified trainers in India but I do believe there have been some successful amateur boxers from your country. Do you live anywhere near them?

26 is rather old to begin boxing. However, if you are a natural athlete, highly motivated and have a knockout punch, you might be able to forge some sort of career in boxing. Ron Lyle didn't start until he was about 29, but had the misfortune to start when the division was laden with talent. Lyle would likely be a beltholder in the current heavyweight division.

Punchers tend to be physically strong but not all strong men have a knockout punch. If you have some reason to believe that you are a puncher, then by all means make an effort to get some training. Once you get into the gym it won't take long to discover your punching potential.

see your still talking in bull**** bodybuilding terms sets?? boxing is in rounds 3 min for the pro and some semi pro's 2 for the amateurs. So you would have the boxing athletes here on B.S believe that in only a couple of days you went from not knowing an uppercut from your ******* to going 8 5.6 min rnds to total 45 mins with only 1-2 min between rnds??? if you did it. "if" you did you are not training nearly intense enough. there is no way. I don't care how many curls or benchpresses you USED to do that **** don't help you in boxing. And body building will never give you the stanima to pull of that feet. So if you are doing it I'd bet you are doing it wrong. Why bother anyway go back to body building its easier. Stop insulting real boxers with your b.s we all no what goes into this sport we have all put in the work that it takes to do it and we know you are full of it. :smashfrea :bsflag: :bryce:
