1) It negatively affects protein synthesis.

Protein synthesis is the process where amino acids are joined together to form complete proteins. Excessive alcohol consumption slows this process down by up to 20%, and since your muscles are made up of protein, you can see how this is a problem.

2) It lowers testosterone levels and increases estrogen.

Testosterone is the most important muscle-building hormone in your body. One of the limiting factors that determines how much muscle a person can gain is their level of free-flowing testosterone.

3) It causes dehydration.

The kidneys must filter very large amounts of water in order to break down the alcohol, and this can result in severe dehydration within the body. Water plays an absolutely crucial role in the muscle-building process, and being even slightly dehydrated is a recipe for disaster. The muscles alone are comprised of 70% water.

4) It depletes the body of vitamins and minerals.

Alcohol consumption causes vitamins A, C, the B's, calcium, zinc and phosphorus to all be drained at rapid rates. Vitamins and minerals keep every little process in your body functioning properly, and many of these processes involve muscle growth and maintenance.

5) It increases fat storage.

With 7 empty calories per gram, alcohol can actually be quite fattening. Alcohol also disrupts the Kreb’s Cycle, which plays an important role in fat burning.

It’s important to have fun in life, but too much fun can lead to problems. If you’re serious about achieving significant muscle-building results, you definitely need to monitor your intake of alcohol and make sure that you are consuming it in moderation. A few drinks here and there shouldn’t be a problem, but if you find yourself drinking every weekend you can almost certainly kiss your muscle gains goodbye.

If you do decide to go out and party, make sure to drink plenty of water and to properly nourish yourself with vitamins/minerals and a protein rich meal.

I don’t recommend revolving your entire life around your muscle-building program, so don’t be afraid to go out and have a good time once in a while. Just make sure to keep your drinking nights infrequent (no more than once a month) and properly nourish yourself to lessen its effects. As long as you monitor what you’re doing you can achieve an impressive physique and have a social life at the same time.

Usually I dont take training advice from body builders, but this was the most relevant thing I could find for your question. Aparently, its quite bad for muscle growth.

That part quoted above is some of the best advice you can get. You should avoid alcohol completely. Nothing to be gained from it at all. Nothing.

When I go out, I order tonic water with a slice of lime in a rocks glass. Then it looks like I'm drinking. It makes interacting with people at parties or bars far easier if if looks like you're drinking, too. Here in the States, non-drinkers are looked at as prudish and uptight.

Well put. You shouldn't give two cents of care about what some jackass thinks about you and whether you consume alcohol or not. You should put more regard on your health and your sport/profession rather than some others' opinions. You're not going to educate them about why you're doing what you're doing, and believe me, they really don't give a damn about you (or your well-being), for the most-part, anyway. You should be the one looking out for yourself.

Yep nobody else is looking out for me.

My mates may say "oh you're just doing it because you are boxing" and kinda like brush it off. But what they gonna say when im regional/national champion?

Its bad for u but hell i still have a few beers at the week end if am not fighting. Vit B6 and Zinc are the main vitimins used in protein synthesis depleting these will slow down muscle development, which alcohol does.

weed affects stamina, willpower, and aggressiveness. Even a week after you smoke you're more of a ***** then if you didn't smoke. It makes you less aggressive when thc is in your system. But as far as muscle gains, marijuana actually can improve muscle gain if you time the smoke right to where full force munchies kick in right after you finish a hard workout, then get to a buffet with lean beef and veggies and fill up. pure muscle building fuel. of course these days, people go for protein drinks, but back when I lifted seriously, I would just smoke, lift, then hit up a buffet. this was about 5 years ago, i havent lifted seriously since i was 18.

I know the feeling. If it weren't for this ****ed up relationship I have with this girl, I'd be so clean and sober. But, like, today...I'm depressed for a number of reasons, so I woke up and put a 12 pack in the fridge. I'm on beer #1 right now, but I plan to put away at least 8. ****ed up part about it, is I'm sore right now from doing a bunch of pushups and resistance training yesterday, and these drinks will probably **** that up a good bit.

ah **** it this post proly deserves a separate thread but here goes nuthin

I've known this girl for 5 years, and I dumped her when I was 18...I'm 23 now and we ran into each other about 5 months ago. We really had a great relationship back then, so instantly we clicked, just like in the past. Turns out she had gotten married and was currently separated from her husband, living in a town about 2 hours away. She's an aspiring model, and was bulemic, and one time when I visited her she was really hurting and didn't want to puke in front of me. So I got her some antacid pills, milk, and sat with her for awhile until the bad feelings passed...This was when I realized I still loved the girl, because I really cared about how she felt. Here's where the ****in rollercoaster ride began. So a few months go by, we're dating, etc. She moves back to our city and lies to me about where she's staying...She moved back in with her ex husband and lied to me for weeks about it. So I ended it and she continued calling me, I still loved her so I heard her out.

This ***** is really taking me for a ride, because I really love her and I know she loves me, but she stays at her ex husband's house...Claiming she doesn't **** him and sleeps in a separate room, which I'm sure is probably bull****, she could be telling the truth though, then again that's probably just love ****ing with me. This girl is such a catch and I love her so much that I can't bring myself to just break it off and stop answering her phone calls. When we're together, time stops because we enjoy each other so much. I've never felt this way about a girl- ever.

I honestly need to have a sit down with the ex husband and let him know what the deal is, because I bet he doesn't even know about me. I don't want to do this because I know if I do, she'll freak out and think I'm psycho for monopolizing her life...I don't want to risk losing her over wanting to have a chat with the guy...It just isn't worth it in my opinion.

To top things off, she's 3 months pregnant with my kid, and sleeping in that guy's house...Many times, I've thought about killing him, or beating him from an inch of death...Which wouldn't be hard to do. But doing either of these would only result in me losing the girl and my unborn baby since I'll be in jail for awhile if I do that..To make matters worse, I have a gut feeling the guy thinks it's his kid, because I know for sure they slept together once around the time it was conceived...The prenatal DNA test next week should solve alot of questions in my mind.

you guys think you got problems. ****, I got more problems than a mathbook

That's rough man. I can't even comprehend what it would be like to be in that situation. It seems pretty complex and intense.

To be honest, since I've never been there myself, I don't know what kind of advice to give except DON'T, under any circumstance, kick that guy's ass. These days you don't have to bust someone up that bad at all to get into some serious legal trouble. I remember from your posts that you're a pretty big guy who has some boxing training. Say without even trying, you hit this guy, knock some teeth out, break his nose, give him a concussion or whatever. Next thing you know you're getting sued for emotional trauma or some ridiculous bull****. You'd be surprised how much trouble you can get into for just hitting a guy without doing any permanent physical harm. If this guy is financially well off and can afford a decent lawyer, then you're really up ****'s creek. Never get into a fight with someone who knows your address or can get it.

Yep, fundamental rules of girls.
1) Dont fight over them
2) Bros before hoes.

So ya, dont fight him. Just win her every other way... this way he will incur the aforementioned emotional stress without being in a position to sue your ass for it. :D

Going through the same kinda thing. No baby involved but they sound like they could be sisters. I never believed it before but I believe it now, if they're not ****ing you they're ****ing somebody. Whores. The girl who ****ed me over after two years and the guy she's ****ing now both work with me. I almost got fired because he said he felt threatened by me and I hadn't even said a word to him. Everytime I see them together I just want to beat him till he begs me to stop. I've had this job ten years and love what I do so I'm not about to throw it all away but I can't stop feeling like ****. I bounce in a bar on the weekends and I've been drinking like a damn fish. I've been lucky I haven't gone to jail or gotten hurt. I want to get back to the person I was when this started two years ago. I didn't smoke, I wasn't drinking. I could spare about 4 good rounds before I got tired. Hell, I was sparing period. Now I'm just a chain smoking, pot head who gets ****faced on Crown every weekend. I want SO bad to give it all up and start training for Golden Gloves about six months away. I've never been in a ring and I'm going to be 31 in Febuary. I don't even care to win just going and not getting knocked out would be awesome to me! After I get my speedbag hung my home gym will be pretty complete. Heavybag, speedbag, chin up bar, freeweights, jump rope. I just need to do it. I need to find my motivation. I start to find it and then I have to come back here and see her being happy with him the way I wanted her to be happy with me and I feel like **** again.

Hey, I appreciate the input. I wouldve never posted that stuff if I hadnt had a beer or 2 and was depressed about ****. That day, before I could get to beer #4 the girl gave me a ring and came over and stayed the night with me. we had a great time as always when we are together but... Yesterday I ****in flipped out though, thinking about how her ex husband, who she's living with, sees her pregnant and thinks it's his kid, and doesn't know I'm even in the picture. And the girl doesn't want to tell him herself just yet before we get the dna test. I'm 80% sure it's my kid though, we were having sex 2-3-4 times a week around when the kid was conceived and she only slept with him once around that time period and he didn't cum in her according to her. Neither did I though, but, i aint trying to get too graphic here..but we'd have sex for long periods of time sometimes like 30 minutes so I know enough precum came from me to get her pregnant.

To top it all off, what also lets me know it's mine is that 2 years ago when they were married, they tried to have a kid for like a year and couldn't. So I'm 80% sure it's mine... Anyway I just feel like the poor ****er should know about it.. So I called the audio place his parents own (it's named after his last name, "Musso's Car Audio", so I had a gut feeling he worked there.) not even knowing where he works and asked, is Derek musso there? I'm an old friend, and need to get in touch with him. and the guy told me, 'He's at Mike's' which is a different audio place. it's interesting the information you can obtain about people just being friendly and pretending to be a good friend, lol. I was going to go there and confront him about everything in an extremely civil manner, prepared for if he lashes out with violence but that not being my intent.

You have to understand that this isn't a normal sitatuon. Depending on the person, I mean I don't know the guy, but if someone told me they ****ed my wife and her kid wasn't mine, and I thought it was mine, I'd wanna beat their ass on the spot. I was going to come at him very rational and just say, 'Look man, reality isn't what you perceive as reality right now. The only reason I'm here is to share information with you that you want to know, trust me. I'm here doing you a favor, let's take a ride somewhere or get a cup of coffee somewhere and I'll tell you about the situation.' was how I planned to come at him, I just want him to know I'm probably the father, is all. It's gonna be tough to tell the guy I ****ed his wife and she's havin my kid but it is what it is. Gotta say it's gonna be hard to do. I wouldve done it yesterday but my pothead boss decided to go 25 miles in a different direction to get a sack (i have amazing will power, I never smoke when they all smoke but this day I just said **** it.)and by the time we rode out from there I changed my mind because, like a loser, I got high and I never ****ing smoke weed anymore. i used to be a major pothead but ever since I started boxing and doing well with the sparring, losing tons of weight and feeling better about myself, ive been running in the mornings when I get up and at night, so I really don't have any time to get high. Boxing is my high along with all the things you do to be a good boxer. He bought some trainwreck (high quality smoke)and I said **** it and took 2 lil hits off the joint...I wasn't really even that high, but I was high enough to say, 'I'm gonna think twice about doing this today,' and never went to Mike's Audio to talk to him. I just feel weird that I know he could be the dad, possibly, but he doesn't know I could be the dad, know what I mean? I feel these things should be nipped in the bud, say he had a bad childhood, if I let him go 2-3 more months thinking that's his kid and it aint, who's to say he doesnt grab a gun and gat up my girl and the kid, or someone else? Even me? Married women and children aren't something to toy with, the great Oscar Bonavena went out that way, ****in with someone's wife. Went out at age 33,on top of the world, cuban cigars in jaguars with 24kt gold plated lighters, got punked execution style by the guy's henchmen according to the tale.

I think it's best he finds out sooner, rather than later.

I've conditioned myself to prepare for the relationship to end though, and for one reason and one reason only- so it doesn't interfere with my training, when I get wrapped up with this girl and something happens I just drop everything and start eating, so every day from now on when I get up to run I prepare myself for the relationship to end today, as weird as it sounds.

i'll check that book out fraidy. heard good things about it and I always love reading boxing literature. it's perfect anywhere but I have lots of boxing books in my bathroom. they seem to go well there after i read em.

INDYFIGHTER & Achilles, good karma to you, my advice for you would be to get yourself in shape and try to **** your ex under your coworker's nose, let him find out so he finds out what a ***** she is. that way work will be easier on you. As for training for the golden gloves, hey, if that's what you want to do, go for it. Personally, I think you'd be better off getting fit and staying in shape sparring occassionally, and if you win a few amateur bouts, go pro or something. dont let your dreams pass you by, you dont wanna grow old and think to yourself, 'what if i couldve been a fighter. i could always punch and take a punch but never really gave it my all, i wonder if i couldve been a great' ...I made the decision months ago that I was really passionate about boxing and I really love it, its almost like I'm married to it, and never giving your best shot at your #1 passion is really only cheating yourself because later in life, you'll cry about not giving it your all, and instead, drinking crown on the weekends when you should be training and at night ****ing your ex under your coworkers nose. as soon as i thought about that is what made me step into the boxing gym i train at now. I'm assuming you're in new york for some reason, I wouldnt train for the gloves specifically because thats something people train 5-6 years for up there. they take it so seriously. thanks for your input man. anyway, yea, get in shape, **** your ex, and then that'll make work more comfortable. (even moreso if the guy doesnt find out and you keep nailing her.) oh and also I say, **** the home equipment. Get into a gym, any boxing gym will do...you dont need that home equipment, it isnt as good because at home you just might slack off more than you would if you knew a coach in the hood was watching your every move, yelling at you about your form, yellin at you to stop walking and dance more, yelling at you to put more snap in your right, etc. The guy is there because he wants to be, not because he needs to be, at least in my case. hes just there cuz he loves boxing, like most underappreciated/non famous boxing trainers. They're kinda like teachers in public schools, they devote their lives to education, yet get paid less than a garbageman. It's really an interesting correlation, but enough of all this, my sleeping pills are just about to kick in. Stressd out a little bit about this *****, and I took 4 times the recommended dosage just to knock me the **** out. i went on a night run and i still cant sleep, i really depend on these sleeping pills as weak as that sounds. when somethin bad happens i just wait around til 8pm, pop 4 gelcap sleeping pills, and wake up feeling better than when I went to bed. ****, I'm typing way too much, this post must be huge...

& just to top everything off I appreciate the concerns given as to not get physical with the guy. yeah, I don't think I will. not only for those reasons, but I think doing that would put me on the outs with this girl, and i dont want that. as crazy as it sounds I want to get a place with her and she wants to get one with me. she's down to move out right now and in with me, heh..

keep it real guys, train hard, go that extra round. if you're in it be in it to win it, not in it just to say you box. There's guys at my gym like that. posers. One guy's been boxing six years and hasnt had a single fight, yet he claims he's a 'seasoned fighter' in front of old timers who visit the gym with their kids/family etc. Guy hasn't had a single fight and he calls himself seasoned. To top it off he slaps with his hooks. Don't be that guy. Don't be the guy who's been boxing six years and slaps with the hook. But if you're really serious, well you know what, **** it. even if you arent serious, goto a boxing gym. if you love the sport youll keep coming back. I know I did, and when i first went to it i had no intentions of fighting or sparring, now ive sparred everyone in the gym who spars, 1 guy moved away, the other guy dislocated his shoulder, and the only other heavyweight is the guy who slaps with his hook and wont spar me.

I need to get into a better gym with more experienced competition. but dont want to leave my trainer cuz he's showed me alot of things about boxing. if more heavies dont show up through ill be forced to train at another gym though, because ive been,as sick as it sounds, craving to spar. the high of victory is unlike any kind of other high, and it's a natural high, and one i plan to chase.

yea whats weird is when i was set on going to mike's audio to tell him about it, i wasnt even worried about his reaction, i just wanted him to know, ya know? Maybe I underestimated the situation, you're right, it will take balls to do it. probably will be the hardest thing ive ever done so far in my life, man.

hey man thats some heavy ****. dedicate yourself to dealing with it the same way you've dedicated yourself to boxing. make decisions and follow them out. be it talking to the guy. cutting the girl out whatever. you're a logical thinking guy so have confidence in what u think is the right thing to do. like i said ull make the right decisions for u however from my ignorant perspective and the little of your story i know id probably be thinking its not worth confronting the guy (about the kid) until the paternity results come in. and probably thatu need to give your lady an ultimatum. it would be hard as anything but u have to know that by giving her one either she will choose u and u will get your happiness or she will stay with the other man and in time u will heal. the hardest place of all to be in (imo) would be where u are now. not konwing where u stand.

n e ways you're a top bloke, good luck with everything.

smoking before working out enables the munchies to be kicked in full force by the time you ride out. i never did any cardiovascular though, i just lifted back then.

mgkirk, I appreciate the kind words

how bout weed, i heard that ruins muscle too. is it true? cuz weed and alcohol r 2 bad habits i gotta kick if i wana box

as long as you limit both then it shouldn't make an impact
if you do it regularly then that's another thing
