View Full Version : Think I can do it?
Cutthroat 09-01-2006, 07:53 PM I bench press 190 right now, not that much, but it's only because I never really worked out with a lot of weight. I'm 15 years old, by July 2006, my plans are to be benchpressing around 270-280, think I can do it? I mean, I increased my bench press by 35 pounds by using a max weight of 90lbs this summer and out of the 2 months I was off I worked out probably 25 days. So hopefully by the time I'm still going to be 16 I'll be benching that much.
Smokin' 09-01-2006, 07:55 PM Nope.
And what's being able to bench press that much do for you? Bragging rights?
Cutthroat 09-01-2006, 07:57 PM Nope.
And what's being able to bench press that much do for you? Bragging rights?
Yeah, and beating everyone in arm wrestle at school. I'll probably be doing 70lb one arm curls by then too :p. I can't beleive you don't think I can do a 1 arm 50lb curl, that's not even that much weight.
Coreano 09-01-2006, 08:27 PM how tall are you? at your age you shouldnt really lift that much.
NJFighter91 09-01-2006, 08:35 PM In general, yes...do a strict strength routine and eat a lot and you'll get that easily. But if you want to stay at the same weight, it's harder. And you meant 2007 right? If you follow a good routine, you should get that easily.
But if you're boxing and doing other sports, it's not likely.
Exige Jr 09-01-2006, 09:57 PM Do I think you can lift that? I dont know.
Do I think you would get knocked out if you sparred me? Yes.
Remember kids, weight lifting doesnt equate to boxing ability or punch strength. My power is extraordinary, and I keep saying extraordinary.
NJFighter91 09-01-2006, 09:59 PM Is that you in your avatar?

lol, EXIGE, do you actually believe this little KID can lift 50 lbs with one hand???That's too funny...
I wanna see a bag video of you, what are you a middleweight? lightweight?
Exige Jr 09-01-2006, 10:21 PM lol, EXIGE, do you actually believe this little KID can lift 50 lbs with one hand???That's too funny...
Ill say he can to please him. He can take that 50lbs and his big ass muscles and thats your loss.
All im saying is that muscles are so unecessary for boxing, why discuss it on a boxing training forum? I think the phrase around this place is "nightclub muscles". Nightclub muscles arent gonna get you out of an ass beating, so I really dont understand why everyone is after them.
Exige Jr 09-01-2006, 10:22 PM I wanna see a bag video of you, what are you a middleweight? lightweight?
Light Welterweight.
NJFighter91 09-01-2006, 10:24 PM Everyone wants to look like Tyson so they can perform like him...doesn't work that way :)
Light Welterweight.

Well you said middleweight. Which is heavier than what I am. And I dont look fat in that picture. So where did you get that from?
paul750 09-01-2006, 10:29 PM So i take it ''nightclub muscles'' is just referring to guys who show off at night clubs? muscle heads being another term lol. I think it depends on the individual regaring weights, some do them, some don't.
I was just throwing out random things and hoping to get one. I really can't tell anything from your pic as your not standing so I cant really see your height, But I figure you have a slim build.

The opposite. Im small and stocky. Pictures are misleading, because if I took a picture of me with my top off then you wouldnt think that.
Im not that tall either.

I can take your punch like nothing, I've got a good chin and body, and trust me I've taken punches from real hard punchers. I'm a smart fighter, like I said I don't box but I like to fight people. I've got a nasty right hook, which is why a lot of people are afraid to fight me, I've got that natural punching power. Plus I've got great eye-hand coordination so I rarely miss anyone.

But you've never sparred a person like me, I'm tougher than probably all of the people you've fought. I got lucky in the Genetic pool
Exige Jr 09-02-2006, 12:46 PM But you've never sparred a person like me, I'm tougher than probably all of the people you've fought. I got lucky in the Genetic pool
Thats nice, but you have no boxing experience. Do you know how to throw shots properly, maintain balance, move quickly, counterpunch, see shots coming, slip shots, get off the ropes, defend shots.
If you havent boxed you know none of this. I would be peppering you with shots all night long...
Now you just think im being ****y when I say this, but ill tell you a true story. When I first got to my gym, one of the first people I saw was a little kid about 3 inches smaller than me, about 2 stone lighter than me and about 5 years younger than me. I was told to sparr him soon after I joined the club. This boy absolutely took a **** on me in the session I had. I have extreme strength compared to him but it was an ownage on the first degree. The only problem he had was that he wasnt strong enough to properly batter me, so I came out with no marks. However he is ranked 6th best in the UK and has boxing down to a fine art. I still learn from him now, but I beat him up now, because I have progressed quickly in a year.
Now you're gonna think that I suck at boxing after I told you that. You are only gonna realise what I was saying when you get put in with some kid protege like I did, and get your ass handed to you. Muscles and strength mean nothing my friend. Ask Jeff Lacy.
P.s When new people come to our gym and ask to sparr and they tell me to sparr them. I am the same as what that kid was to me. I completely dominate them. Even if they are the local hard nut or 6 inches taller than me and built like a brick ****ter.
Trust me guy, just take it from me. You wouldnt touch me.
NJFighter91 09-02-2006, 12:50 PM Left Hook King...no matter how big or strong you are outside boxing, you won't beat someone who's been boxing in the ring.
2OSouzaSuarez12 09-02-2006, 12:51 PM Somebody who doesnt box would get his ass kicked by a a decent boxer.
Ive seen this so many times. Kids who are big and strong think they are real tough from street fights and think they know boxing from watching it a little. Then they get their ass kicked. My few years in the gym I have seen this a bunch of times. This kid would really be in for a rude awakening if he spars anyone right now without boxing experience.
NJFighter91 09-02-2006, 12:55 PM Example of something like this that happened at my school.
We got this football prospect in my school...Like 6'5'' 240 lbs. with a sub 4.3 40 yd. dash. He's all american first team for football and looks like he could rip people apart.
He got his ass handed to him by a 5'10'' welterweight. It was really bad.
I'm not saying this is always gonna happen but someone who's just strong won't beat a boxer.
Exige Jr 09-02-2006, 12:57 PM Joe Calzaghe vs Jeff Lacy.
2OSouzaSuarez12 09-02-2006, 12:59 PM Joe Calzaghe vs Jeff Lacy.
Not a good comparison at all. Jeff Lacy was an undefeated BOXER WITH EXPERIENCE, a champion with a good amateur backround as well. Lacy wasnt just some jacked guy they grabbed off the streets.
Exige Jr 09-02-2006, 01:10 PM Not a good comparison at all. Jeff Lacy was an undefeated BOXER WITH EXPERIENCE, a champion with a good amateur backround as well. Lacy wasnt just some jacked guy they grabbed off the streets.
Jeff Lacy has little in the way of boxing skill, and he was put in the ring with a masterful boxer. Thats a perfect example. Especially when you factor in that he was counting on the "Knock out, dawg", and his muscles are deceptive.
paul750 09-02-2006, 01:13 PM Lacy is still a reasonably skilled boxer, you don't have the type of amatuer backround and pro career he's had, without having some skill, regardless of strengh and power. He just met a masterful boxer on the night.

When I said he had little skill, I wasnt comparing him to me, I was comparing him to the person he was meant to "knock out within 4 rounds, dawg"
Kid Achilles 09-02-2006, 01:49 PM Nothing wrong with having confidence, but I think Rky would beat you from pillar to post. Honestly, you'd probably think twice about having a boxing career after going a round with an experienced fighter. It's a lot harder to hit, and a lot easier to get hit by, an opponent than it looks on TV.
TV is deceptive. They do what they do everyday of their lives, while others don't, its their career they make it look easy because they have basically mastered it. But if you watch a fight like the one with that bigger guy that fought Holyfield on his recent comeback you can see it isnt as easy as it looks, you can tell he was having a hard time.
PunchDrunk 09-02-2006, 06:17 PM Hey Exige, when are you gonna start having fights? Just wondering.
Exige Jr 09-02-2006, 08:44 PM Hey Exige, when are you gonna start having fights? Just wondering.
Well over here in the UK the season has just started. I went back to training on Wednesday last week, and the trainers said "monday come back properly". So yeah monday is the first proper day back. From that point I will need to get a medical card because they didnt get me one last season. Dont ask why... Then after I have the medical card, the next show that my club goes out on I could be having a fight. My club is always active in the South London area. So it could be as early as 2 weeks. Its basically all happening this season.
My trainer said im better than anything they have ever seen from anyone with no fights. The legend is coming soon baby.

Lol some truth, but lets go to the example of a highschool football jock vs. light welter fight after school, you think the light welter wins? Even with the huge weight difference? No beef curious to a response just this is the way I always saw it.
I am in no way a big weight lifter bodybuilder type of person although I do lift weights explosively 4 times a week since my gym is not open in the summer, although I do cardio aswell

Watch Casino, im the hip-hop version of Nicky Tarrantino, ask Meeno, he know.

I'm not talkin about pro light weights or anything, I'm talkin about someone in your position. you think you could take someone who IS very athletic [football jock] put him in a fight with you.

No really, I dont get into street fights anyway. But dont let the reputation of someone or their appearance phase you. I know muscle heads like to think they are tough but an agile lean boxer would take any of those dudes out quickly. A friend of mine told me about an old man he knew that was a bouncer on the door. This dude must be 50+. Ex-boxer. Some dudes come over acting up like they are gonna do something if he doesnt let them in. There's 3 of them. The dude knocked 2 of them spark out after refusing entry and the other one ran off, because they tried starting a fight.
Also the amount of muscle they have has no bearing on the fight whatsoever. He's got 2 arms, 2 legs and a chin. If you hit him right, hes going down.

haha no worries and i get your reasoning but i differ in two areas.
muscles can be constructive - not just having them.. but more strength.
there is a time when strenght and size just gets too overwhelming
my story comes from my brothers best mate.
he's about 230 - 240 bounds 6'4 all muscle benches over 400 pounds.
we were out on the town and he laughed at some guys fat chick. the other guy (who was of average size and seemed to be able to fight a bit) spent the next half our trying to fight him. pushin him king hitting him and ****. after a while my brothers mate just walked through some punches lifted into the air by his shirt and knocked him out cold with one big unco punch.
o and to the original thing yeah 50 pounds curl is not that much.

IronNick 03-26-2007, 07:20 PM its possible, last year this time i could only bench 75lbs!, now i am benching 185 ,10 x.
Darkstranger 03-26-2007, 09:37 PM Hey Fellas,
Just wanted to give my personal experience about when I started boxing. I'm from a weight lifting background and and have very heavy bones. I'm 6'3" I'm currently 17stones 3 pounds and have a personal best on the bench of over 360 pounds. I also play a few other sports and was always told I have a really powerful punch because I generate a lot of power from my legs and hips.
So here I am anyway joining the boxing gym and the trainer did an assessment on me and just got me to work on the focus mitts with him. Man I was gassed like a ***** in 60 seconds!!! He said to me, yeah you've got a ton of knockout power but for every punch I throw I'd get hit about 8 times! lol Basically I'd swap my size for speed anyday!!! It doesn't matter how big and powerful you are or think you are, I think if you come up against a good boxer you'll get a good beating! So for any of you young meat heads joining boxing gyms thinking you'll be the man up in there, think again! You'll see 10 year old kids putting you to shame. I bet they can last much longer throwing punches than you! Its the most humbling experience!
You see so many meat heads walking on the streets thinking they're the tuff guy. Joining a boxing gym is such an eye opener as to what it really takes to be tuff! Nothing I've ever done comes anywhere near the intensity you have to go through in boxing.
8 weeks on and I'm making good progress and loving every minute of it as I've got some really good coaches who take an interest in me and really wanna see me improve and try and master the sweet science!

End discussion. :)
Frank Bruno fought Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis, and took a few punches before being stopped. There's hardly many guys with that sort of power.
Rampage* 03-26-2007, 10:19 PM Hey Fellas,
Just wanted to give my personal experience about when I started boxing.
I do powerlifting+boxing+track and it all evens out and I would never drop any of them because I think they all contribute to eachother. And in my opinion you were gassed because your cardio was ****.

I didn't do powerlifting, I did bodybuilding and many bodybuilders have limited cardio. I don't need you to tell me my cardio's ****, I knew that for myself! I've never heard of a bodybuilder or many other people who started boxing and were able to throw non-stop punches for much more than a minute.
ml2niceguy 03-27-2007, 01:06 PM by july i think you'll be able to at most hit 245

Maybe not just starting but it can be incorporated. Ever hear of Franco Columbu? Bodybuilding Champ and Amateur Boxing Champ
