View Full Version : Bj Penn Vs Matt Hughes!!!
nezahualcoyotl 08-23-2006, 08:35 PM What's everybody's take on this fight? I think this is a pretty even match up considering BJ was the only man to beat Matt and subsequently never lost to Matt b/c he was stripped of the belt.
Should be an awesome fight nonetheless.
My prediction will be BJ to win via SUBMISSION.
Note: Diego Sanchez probably will face the winner of this fight.
Matt_3 08-23-2006, 08:43 PM It sucks that GSP is hurt.
I think GSP should fight the winner. He badly deserves the rematch with Matt, and if BJ wins, he and George should fight again after a really close fight.
MR. V 08-23-2006, 08:48 PM i thought GSP and Matt Hughes were already scheduled to fite?? im pretty sure this is already signed in contract.
Matt_3 08-23-2006, 08:50 PM he's injured
Matt_3 08-23-2006, 08:51 PM St. Pierre Sidelined by Injury; ‘The Prodigy’ to The Rescue
By Thomas Gerbasi
After a groin pull forced top 170 pound contender Georges St. Pierre to withdraw from his September 23rd rematch with UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, California today, the UFC was faced with a dilemma. Who could possibly challenge the champ on short notice and still be compelling enough to get fight fans excited?
The answer was a no-brainer – the last man to beat Hughes, BJ Penn.
And as one of the top fighters in the world, pound for pound, Penn eagerly accepted the opportunity to make it 2-0 against the premier welterweight of this era, who, for his part, would like nothing better than to settle an old score with Hawaii’s ‘Prodigy’.
In 2004, Penn, a highly regarded lightweight contender at the time, scored one of the biggest upsets in mixed martial arts history when he rose 15 pounds in weight to tackle and beat Hughes in his first-ever welterweight bout. The end came at 4:39 of the first round when Penn forced Hughes to tap out due to a rear-naked choke.
On September 23rd, the rivalry is renewed.

ok ok, thanks for the article. damn , well a rematch should be good. seeing as how BJ Penn couldnt beat GSP in his last fite im gonna have to root for Hughes on this one. I really believe that GSP is the only contender in the UFC that take out Matt HUghes.

St. Pierre without a doubt should fight the winner. It would be pretty ****ed up if they make him fight another #1 contender match.

So then the loser of this fight goes up against Diego? Yea, that would probably happen UNLESS GSP gets injured again or either BJ or MATT gets hurt too.

IMO that should be reason enough to replace the fight completely.. How can they let BJ have a shot at the title before GSP?? More BS by the UFC.. Hopefully GSP sacks up and goes to pride. This is twice he's been ****ed.
All we need is hughes to get injured and we'll probablly never see that fight.

Dude GSP was given a shot but is injured how is GSP being screwed here? The show must go on. The only thing that sucks from the GSP perspective is that if Matt loses he will probably get a rematch, then GSP has to wait 2 fights and a possible 3rd fight if Matt wins the rematch....GSP would then have to wait about a year.
LHWchamp5 08-26-2006, 08:45 AM IMO this could work out great for GSP in the long-run, we all know he would have a tough time beating hughes, he's already beat penn and penn has previously beatin hughes.. If penn can win again, i'm confident that GSP could take another win over penn..
jsupe 08-27-2006, 02:28 PM i am not a **** talker but just because bj beat him before i don't thimk thats a good enough answer for him beating hughes again. that first fight we all should know hughes over looked bj. this time time will be different matt's flying high after destroying the big bad gracie. matt's a different and better fighter then he was back in that fight and a different person, he became a faithful christian after a deep look about his past. this is still a acary fight for a hughes fan though. bj is tougher than he looks and is a good fighter but i just can't see him beating hughes this time. i want to see this fight but i wonder why bj got the call to fight besides the obivious reason everyone wants to see this fight. as much as i hate to say this i think sanchez should get the chance because bj lost to GSP at the usa vs canada ppv. sanchez has been rising through the ranks very quickly. hughes, gsp, bj, sanchez it looks like the welterweight divison has a very competitve future.
LHWchamp5 09-01-2006, 06:35 PM you may not agree with my logic, but your telling me GSP would lose to penn?? I donj't think so. GSP could be the next great thing. Send him to pride and allow him to byuild more skill competing with better fighters. I'm not sayin hughes and penn arent' good, However I know these 3 guys cant' continuously fight one another.. Or could they it is the UFC ahahaha.

thats a lame excuse matt overlooked bj i saw the end of the fight and that exactly what matt said too to bj not you beat me he said man i overlooked you ! at the post fight press conference he gave bj props but that was just politics he cpmpletely got tooled stand up ground what bs
I had to read your post 3 times and I still don't know what you said. But it's true that Matt took BJ pretty lightly the first time around, I hear he hardly trained for that fight, and in a resent interview with BJ Penn he said that he isnt training that much, just at night, which could be a big mistake....
