I read on a religious website that it is impossible to be a boxer and a Christian at the same time because of the "hurt the other guy" mentality and the whole issue of treating our bodies as "temples".

ChristIsTheAnswer, this one's for you. What do you think buddy?

The whole "body is a temple" passage is continuously misused and misinterpreted by those who read a handful of words rather than reading the passage and the context of the words.

Your body is a temple comes from a group of verses that discuss sexual purity. Somehow, people have taken a couple of words and used this passage to discourage overeating, body piercing, tattoos, and this is a new one, boxing.

Also the point of boxing is not to hurt the other fighter, as in injurying or inflicting pain for fun. It is to accumulate points and/or knockdowns and knockouts.

Um.....Neil buddy,

You were doing fine until that last part. If you don't think the point is to hurt the opponent for a WHOLE lot of fighters, you are in a dream world.
And I am fine with it !! :D

It's amazing how many people quote the Bible all the time but misinterpret its meaning.

There's another passage that gets quoted all the time "Spare the rod, spoil the child."

It's a line that describes how discipline and structure is important for a parent to provide for their child. In Bible times, many men held the position of shepherd. To keep lambs from wandering off, sometimes they would have to use their rod to bring the lamb back to the herd. It's good imagery. Spare the rod, spoil the child. If you allow the child to go wherever he wants or leave the boundaries you set, they can become spoiled.

Too many people take spare the rod, spoil the child to mean we're supposed to beat our kids. "If you don't spank your kids, you'll spoil them. It's in the Bible."

People are funny sometimes, and a whole lot of religious websites are fanatical, outrageous, and blasphemous.

The spirit and intention of the sport is not to break bones or inflict brain damage. It never was.

I think that the commen person perceives boxing as being barbaric and doesn't recognize it as an actual athletic event. The point is to win a match and not to injure an opponent and cause great harm.

I think if you surveyed many boxers, the majority would state that they hoped at the end of the match their opponent was not injured. Boxing is not a "fight", it's a sport. It operates in a highly structured (safety first in amateur) arena. Well trained referees are supposed to be able to identify when a match crosses over from an athletic event to potentially serious medical situation.

I was shocked when I came across the article, but it may have been written by someone who is not that familiar with the sport. I think, maybe, if your mentality going into a fight is to kill or seriously injure the other guy to satisfy a sick fetish, than maybe you are acting in a sinfull manner.

Oh I agree to THAT but if you think that cats like Sonny Liston, Roberto Duran, the Hawk, Hagler and really the majority aren't trying to inflict pain at least sometimes, you are mistaken.

There hasn't been a death in amateur boxing in several years.

Even if the bible said boxing is amorale..who ****ing cares. There are a lot of things that are considered sins or unethical that happen on a daily basis. People need to decide for themselves what is acceptable or not. Not from some nut who's literature experience doesn't go past the fith grade. When I hear someone quote the bible like in the posts above, I think one thing. "this guy or girl is a ****ing idiot", case closed. The bible was not ment to be taken literal, if it were, there would be so many contradictions we wouldn't know were to start.

people sin everyday through bigger actions. Boxing might be a sin but it is minor compared to others.

Frankly unless your gonna join the church as its full time servant, i believe you should take anything u feel positive about it, and leave out anything thats not that big of a deal. Like boxing. Otherwise u might as well join the church since it is already dictating too much of your life.

After every successful match, I used to thank the Lord Jesus Christ for the strength and courage to violently bludgeon my fellow human being into unconsciousness.

Anyway, boxing isn't a sin. Otherwise Jesus would have never laid the smackdown on all the merchants and smut peddlers in the house of his Father.

If i was god i'd be pissed off with boxers, fighters always ask for gods help!! why?

If you believe in god and that lifes a test then why keep trying to cheat? asking for help so much isnt cool!
