View Full Version : Sparred for the first time from a 3 week injury
NJFighter91 08-18-2006, 08:44 PM Well, 4 weeks ago I got a big muscle virus in my back that I couldn't even lift myself out of bed. After the first week of pain killers and IcyHot, it was good enough for me to jumprope, shadowbox, speed bag, light work on heavy bag, but no sparring. So I did all the bag work for 3 weeks and I got better and them and technique during shadowboxing and my conditioning was better.
So today I go spar and notice how bad I am and I completely messed up on everything and missed so many good shots. So even though my conditioning, stamina was better, my skill that get's better during sparring sucked.
Summary: All the bag and pad work can't make up for no sparring. :)
jumpman_jones 08-18-2006, 08:45 PM That sucks man >< back injuries aren't fun
I cant really put input in i havnt sparred yet hopefully next week i been boxing for exactly a month on monday
NJFighter91 08-18-2006, 08:47 PM Good Luck!!
First time you spar, don't get discouraged. There were 3 kids who sparred, got hurt, and never came back. EVERYONE get's whooped the first day :p
jumpman_jones 08-18-2006, 08:49 PM Nah i ownt get whooped the trainers at my gym are really nice, first time its just 1round and the other person goes light jabs at you a few times and counters. THere is a guy who joined a week before me i watched him spar this week looks fun.

THere is a guy who joined a week before me i watched him spar this week looks fun. You're lucky. My first time was 2, 3 minute rounds against an ex-pro. He was the only one at my weight. His jabs were making me dizzy. :(

lol..damn. my first time was against a first timer, after the first minute we through caution to the wind..looked more like a tough man competition then boxing..
NJFighter91 08-18-2006, 09:10 PM Lucky. :p But the thing is for me, I'm a beginner. Today was the 2nd time 've sparred. I started boxing, after 2 months I sparred, next week I got injured, and now I spar again. So I'm still new. The first time was the ex-pro like I said and today was against a first timer but he was really good supposeidly. That's what the other heavyweights were saying, like he was a natural and stuff. So I don't feel THAT bad. :D
NJFighter91 08-19-2006, 12:48 AM Just realized this...
I got punched 3-4 times HARD in my face but I tried not to bring my head up. Now my neck is really sore. I'm gonna start doing neck bridges from now on :)
SquareCircle 08-19-2006, 11:50 AM Normally i dont even use what I've been working on the bag when I spar. I go to my basics, which consist of feingts ,movement, and well placed power jabs. its just my style, i think about whats best for me and prefer to not get hit and mix it up with guys with short arms who can hit harder. When I work the bag I train everything, inside work, body work and all kinds of stuff, but when I spar, the only big punches I land most of the time are just big jabs and occassionally if I catch my opponent with the ropes to his right, i'll pack down his lead hand while my head is down low and come in with a big right hand downstairs. ive learned to only do that when my man is trapped tho. otherwise after I land that big punch once they get smart and start backing to their right looking to counter me after i miss my wide winging right hand downstairs
Don't get discouraged NJ. Keep at it, next time you spar remember to mix in some feingts and I guarantee you'll do better. a predictable fighter is an easy match
NJFighter91 08-19-2006, 12:02 PM Thanks for the words man.
I tried doing basic stuff and mostly used my jab, right, 1 or 2 hooks, and some feints and bobbing my head.
After I threw my jabs, he would always just come on and throw left/right hooks crazy swinging. I moved out of the way for a few but I still couldn't stop them.

sounds like he has balls if you were landing flush jabs. What I do if a jab misses or is ineffective is feingt the right while stepping away from the power hand, usually it discourages them a little bit unless they really have balls, in that case i tie em up and push em off me. Something I hate doing cuz it wastes energy...
If you got long arms you need to develop a super solid jab. a great jab will stop a guy like that in his tracks ,who looks to get in on the inside with big hooks, unless he's extremely adept at the peek a boo, which is a great jabbers' worst nightmare. Once you get that jab strong enough, just think of him as a target getting into your range and pop it off right as he steps in to get close. It will work every time unless he keeps that guard up high and is good at countering, kinda like Curtis Stevens likes to do, Keep that guard up, wait for you to miss then counter with short accurate left /right hook... in that case you want to get low and jab to his body ...Most come forward hook fighters in my gym always leave me an opportunity to land a jab before their looping punch even really begins, that window of opportunity is what the jabber has to exploit to survive.
I spent alot of time developing my jab at home because the pinky of my right hand got cut (the tendon was sliced) effectively disabling up the power line of my right hand which runs from the shoulder to the pinky, so I focused on the left jab which became my best tool.
take care of your hands...i had to learn that the hard way
NJFighter91 08-19-2006, 12:15 PM Wow, that must suck about your pinky.
Yeah, I really need my jab. My my problem is mental. That's what the trainer was saying. My recovery from a punch wasn't good. I was getting uppercutted into the face and hooked and took the punches, I just couldn't respond well.
2OSouzaSuarez12 08-19-2006, 01:52 PM Yea make sure you listen to SquareCircle. This giys knows what he is talking about. He HAS SPARRED A FEW TIMES!!!! Not only that but he ahs little black kids FOLLOW HIM!!!!!

That speaks for itself how? It just shows how people couldnt take a joke. At least i dont walk around thinkin im the sh!t because i sparred a few times. Your a joke bro. A fukin computer geek. Think your cool cause your white and box at a black gym. The way you go into details about your sparring, you should be an author not a boxer. You crack me up *****.
By the way i argue a lot because i dont give fuk. Im on a dam computer for gods sake, i dont care.
2OSouzaSuarez12 08-19-2006, 06:35 PM See, now you're acting like a little *****. You should get off your computer, get out into the real world, and get a life.
I have a life. I have a job paving, i have a beautifull girlfriend, and i box. In between i look up boxing news on a computer.
Why dont you go out in the real world *****? you always online. O yea you probably dont want people to see your acne ass face so you hide behind a computer. Sorry i forgot.
NJFighter91 08-19-2006, 07:37 PM It's summer dickhead. I have time to be on a few hours a day. You just a little 11 year old kid acting big online. Grow some balls ***got.
Smokin' 08-19-2006, 08:02 PM It just goes to show you that conditioning means dick when you don't have the skills or don't know how to fight.
NJFighter91 08-19-2006, 08:17 PM I really don't want this turning into a bashing thread.
At my point, most pople have more experience about fighting and boxing than me on these boards. So even though he might no be the most impressive fighter, he has more experience than me.

NJFighter91 08-20-2006, 12:28 AM edit......
NJFighter91 08-20-2006, 01:36 AM Souza, I replied back but I edited it.
Listen, I never meant to start **** with you or anyone else for that amtter. I come on the boards to get more knowledge and more education and share boxing experiences. All I asked was that if you were gonna make fun of Circle, don't do it in my thread because that's what the Thunderdome is for.
So I guess we started off on the wrong foot. We cool??
2OSouzaSuarez12 08-20-2006, 11:58 AM ..sure bro
SquareCircle 08-20-2006, 05:59 PM nj i wouldnt waste your time, the best thing souza can come up with is something to the amount of 'computer nerd'
What's even funnier is he thinks he's big **** because he paves, boxes, AND has a girlfriend! Holy ****, too funny.
NJFighter91 08-20-2006, 09:39 PM I don't know man. I hate having beef with people, especially on good message boards like these where I'm trying to learn more. So I want to everything to be fine with me and everyone else.
