Reach for a boxer is measured by standing straight with your arms straight out and measuring finger tip to finger tip. My reach is 69 1/2". I'm a lightweight.

That's what I thought reach was too but his number is too low.

^^^Yeah. That's armpit to knuckle right?

The one that goes across your back isn't good. I remember Tyson being 5'11'' had a 5-6 inch "reach" over someone who was 6'3'', don't remember who though. He didn't have longer arms, just a wide back.

Yea exactly. The point of measuring reach is to find out who has longer arms. And have an idea of who would have the advantage when fighting outside.

i thought it was armpit to knuckles because when you throw a punch your hand isnt open its closed into a fist

Just for the record, arms don't completely encompass reach. Think about it from an anatomical perspective. If my arm reach is the same as someone else's, but my back is 4 inches wider, I have 2 extra inches to lead with and I can still move my head. So it DOES factor in, just not much. I wasn't saying that one number sounds better or that one is more realistic, just giving the boxing definition of "Reach." You see "Tale of the Tape" before a fight and the reach is usually 60+ for everyone. I doubt highly that anyone has a 60" measurement from armpit to knuckles.

tysons reach was 72" so this 6'3 guy must have had a reach of 66-67 inches- the same as the 'short-armed' 5'10 marciano

tysons back, bone structurewise was not big to be honest, this 6'3 guy must have looked freaky

yeh but muscle would not push his arms further out from his body

yeh but muscle would not push his arms further out from his bodyI know. That's why over the back isn't a good measurement...

When did I ever say that he had an advantage because he had a bigger back? I just stated his measurement for his reach was longer because he had a wide back?

shoulder width certainly does help it still increases the distance between your fist and your chin

the reason why they measure with the back is because it could also means how strong they are. i heard that during an hbo fight from teddy atlas.

Exactly. Reach isn't just a measure of arm length, but a good judge of frame size and bone structure as well. Guys like Max Baer had very long reaches for their heights because of their wide shoulders. I'm pretty sure Baer had a comparable reach to his 6'6" brother because of his shoulders and huge frame. Same for Wlad Klitschko, he actually has wider shoulders than his taller brother.

Someone at my gym was commenting on my reach last night; he's five inches taller than me and we were touching fingertips to noses -- my arms were as long as his!

I'm built like an orangutan -- my inseam is 29 1/2" and my sleeve is 36". I just measured my "wingspan" from fingertip to fingertip: 73 3/8". I'm 5'9" and change, 170 lbs. with big gorilla hands. The ultimate knuckle dragger, but a great build for boxing.

Anybody else here short for your weight class, with long monkey arms? I'd be curious to discuss footwork with you.

i'm also 5'9" but i have a 70 1/2 inch reach, i'm a natural middleweight though - so i guess i'm short for my weight class.

i'm a puncher but i'd like to be more of a boxer - puncher. footwork? uh, my footwork is my worst feature - i stand pretty flat footed most of the time but occaisionally i can slip and slide like james toney
