I'll be thirty-one in February. I'm 6' 140lbs. I've never been in a ring but I've sparred alot or at least a little. With six months to train I'm thinking of fighting in Golden Gloves this year. Any thoughts?

Don't let anybody tell you you can't do something if your heart is set on it

Yeah, I'm pretty thin. I think I could get fit enough in the next six months. I was in that kind of shape for awhile but I let it go the last year and a half. I will probably put on ten pounds now that I'm eating right again and back on the shakes. Thanks for the incuragement. I really wasn't expecting it. I'm going to do the training and let my boxing instructor decided in a few months if he thinks I'm ready. I'll win either way.

Go for it, many fighters have started late. Lawrence Clay Bay started late, he joined the gym just to lose weight. Well he ended up making the Olympic and made some noise in the heavyweight division for awhile as a contender.

Nothing wrong with that at all if you've got the determination. Good luck.

I know I guy that didn't start till he was 34. He fought amateur a while and then went pro. He didn't get very far, only had 4 fights and lost most of them, but he was once on a televised fight on ESPN I believe.

I mean you probably won't become a world champion but you could definitely become a good amateur if you really apply yourself. Until you get to the top level, where you really need those split second reflexes, if you have timing, solid skills, and great conditioning you can beat a lot of guys. If you have some natural power or speed, you could definitely go further than you think.

In boxing, the mental part of the game is more important than physical as compared to other sports. Boxing really is something like 80% mental where as a sport like football is much more strength and speed. Compare the average football player to the average heavyweight boxer and you'll see the football player is lifting twice the amount of weight in the weightroom and can run much faster on average.

You don't need to be that strong or quick to be a good boxer, as long as you can think under pressure and can really master a variety of skills (footwork, parrying, slipping, ring awareness) and you're mentally tough. Just conditioning, a strong mindset, and skill will get you passed guys who are better athletes but not as disciplined or focused.

Basically, go for it and see what happens. In any case you'll come out of the experience ten times tougher and fitter than you are now.

****, my leg weighs more than you guys.

j/k. I'm 5'8" 175 and I can't seem to stay at or below 170 for anything. I'll hit 171 and then bounce back up to 175. I was pushing 200 a year ago. A very doughy 200. But I digress.

Do it, man. I started in February, I'll be 36 next month. Too old for GG or amateur but I intend on starting into the Master Division next year.
