WHAT NATION WILL BE THE BEST IN BASKETBALL?

Guys, as many would know the 2006 FIBA World Championships begins this Saturday at Japan in various venues kung saan 24 basketball teams representing 24 nations ang maglalaban-laban para maging kampeon ng mundo sa isport na basketbol.

Nandyan ang China who have Yao Ming and Wang Zhizhi leading a squad of young, tall and talented Chinese ballers.

Palaban din ang Brazil who have Leandro Barbosa (Phoenix Sun) and Anderson Varejao (Cleveland Cavaliers) in their line-up. Ang Spain powered by Memphis Grizzlies' Pau Gasol; at ang Argentina with Emanuel Ginobili and Fabricio Oberto both from the San Antonio Spurs, Andres Nocioni (Chicago Bulls) and Carlos Delfino (Detroit Pistons).

Team Italy was leading Team USA by 9 points at the end of the first half of their game at the ongoing FIBA World Championship. But the Americans came back from the locker in higher spirits and proceeded to manhandle Italy for their 4th straight win of the tournament at Sapporo, Japan. Final score, 94-85.

According to reports, what lifted the Americans spirits was a song by team co-captain Dwyane Wade as they were walking out of the locker room.

I was walking out and everybody was quiet and I just started singing something that came to mind, Wade recalled. "I just came off the NBA Finals, where my team had been down a lot (two games to none). I don't ever worry about being down. And I don't want my teammates to worry about it, either."

Apparently, the song was the much-needed catalyst for Team USA to get back into groove. Co-captain Carmelo Anthony led the American charge as he pumped in 29 of his 35-point output in the second half. His production is also the most by an American in World Championship history.

Wade chipped in 26 points while Elton Brand added 16 to put the USA on top of Group D which means they will avoid powerhouses Team Argentina or Team Spain until the Finals.

The Italians, led by Marco Bellinelli, were magnificent on the floor. Bellinelli led the Italians in scoring with 25 while Fabio Di Bella and Stefano Mancinelli both contributed 12 points apiece. Where the American offense was sluggish from the start, the Italians were hitting a 58 percent of their shots. Italy also managed to elude the tight defense that clamped down their inside jabs at the paint -- as soon as American defense collapsed on a play down the paint, the Italians kicked the ball out to one of their perimeter shooters which more than often found its mark.

The first half ended 45-36 in favor of Italy.

In the opening of the second half, the Italians scored the first shot of the quarter with a 3-pointer by Bellinelli. But USA Coach Mike Krzyewski changed his battleplans and fielded all his captains Wade, Anthony and LeBron James at the same time, along with Brand and pointman Chris Paul, scrapping the two 5-man teams he had used in earlier games.

The surprise move by Coach K worked as Anthony and Wade combined for 21 points and took 25-6 run against the Italians. At the end of the 3rd, the American finally had secured the lead 71-64. Though the Italians managed midway in the 3rd to wrest back the lead, Anthony's fine performance in 19 minutes of the second half firmly secured the win for Team USA.

In other games yesterday, Team Germany, led by Dirk Nowitzki routed Team Panama to the score of 81-63. Dismal in the first half, Nowitzki shook off the cobwebs in the second to score 25 points to lead the German basketballers.

Pau Gasol topscored for his team as Team Spain posted its 4th victory versus nil losses when it edged out African powerhouse Team Angola. Angola, which had remained unbeaten until yesterday's match with Spain, managed to stay within striking distance all throughout the game thanks to Joaquim Gomes who had a double-double performance with 24 points and 11 rebounds. However, Angola's unblemished record was smeared with their first loss thanks largely to Spain's tower of power -- Pau Gasol -- who had 28 points to lead Spain to a 93-83 victory.

Playing without their coach, Team Lebanon scored an upset against Team France in their match yesterday at Sendai, Japan -- 74-73 -- to post the team's second win in the tournament.

Other results: Team Argentina extends their wins to a perfect 4 after soundly defeating Team Nigeria 98-64. World Championship defending champs Team Serbia & Montenegro overcame Team Venezuela 90-65. Team New Zealand managed a 3-point win over host nation Team Japan to the tune of 60-57. Team Lithuania routed Team Australia 78-57. Team Turkey showed fine form by dealing another loss to Team Qatar 76-69. Olympic champs Team Greece managed to pull off a scare by Team Brazil to win the match 91-80.

In Group D, Team China finally came onboard the winners circle as they posted their first win in 4 games, dumping Team Senegal 100-83 and Team Slovenia clobbered Team Puerto Rico 90-82.
