View Full Version : Tough Guy at Weightlifting Gym

So this guy at my weightlifting gym saw me skipping rope. He asked if I boxed, I said yes, but I was new to it. He said he just got out of the Marines and he "did some boxing" while he was in, "no headgear or nothin', just punching around." He said he has gloves and a mouthpiece and sometime, if I'd like to warm up before lifting, we could go a couple of rounds.

I told him I'm uncomfortable hitting anyone without headgear. He replied, "I'm a Marine. You can't hurt me." He is ten years younger than me and also, by rough estimate, seventeen times bigger than I am. Not boxer big, but corn-fed Nebraska Neanderthal linebacker big. 6'4", 250, most of it shoulders and neck. Big.

I invited him to my boxing gym, but he can't afford it (he's in school and my weightlifting gym has preferential rates for students.) I don't think I should spar him, even "light" (whatever the hell "light" means to an ex-Marine his size) without both of us wearing headgear. He'd allow me to wear mine, but that's not my issue with this.

Edit: He also seems like a genuinely good dude. If he was being an uppity prick about his "skillz," I'd glove up and clobber him.

Thoughts?

Nothing wrong with a little friendly sparring.
use him as your measuring stick to where your at.

Head gear doesn't do much of anything as far as cushion for punches, in fact for me, it makes certain punches hurt where as they normally wouldn't even enter my mind without head gear.

Head gear is to help prevent cuts.

With that said, I'd spar him.

Are you guys smokin sumtin? sayin headgear doesnt do much it covers your temples. As for him not havin headgear on, since you've enver seen him spar udont know what light sparrin is he may go hard but to him its light you might get angry and go harder land one wrong punch on his head and he gets a concussion(spelling). Both of u should have ehadgear on

Hey, let's not diss on the guy.

So, the consensus is, I should spar with the dude and let him set the pace.

I'm learning something new from boxing every day. :grouphug:

Nine devils on one shoulder, saying, "Fight him! No big deal!" And one angel on the other shoulder, saying, "Um, yeah, not a good idea." As usual, the angel is outweighed. But often right.

Personally, I don't have a guardian angel. I have a guardian imbecile. He sits on my shoulder giving me advice, but he's a moron.

I've been in the amatuer fight game for close to 8 years now.

Head gear does little to nothing to prevent head injuries, this is a fact.

at the end of the day he's a grown man and its his call if he doesnt want to wear it.. at the same time the only way this could backfire on him is if you make the choice to load up.. have a good feeling out period and see if you're comfortable. should be right

Yup.

It's to prevent cuts from occuring that could haunt you throughout your pro career if thats the route you take, as well it provides cushion for your oppenents hands which helps prevent hand injuries.

Well, I would spar him if he's a good guy. If he's a prick who just wants to fight because he's a Marine and he thinks he's cool, don't spar.

Sparr him and you set the pace why let him get extra confidence? Unless your a nautural counter puncher.

Try Reyes Headgear and see what you think afterwards.

ABout the situration with the marine i would sparr him. Don't take him lightly, that'd be your error, any man with two hands can be dangerous. Just do what you do in sparring, depending on how hard he hits you, retaliate with the same power - same rule as sparring.

I've used Reyes, Title, Giant, Everlast, Century, and Woldorf.

While I like Reyes and Title the best for their quality and fit, they still do little when it comes to cushioning the impact of a punch.

Does it really need to be done though? And is iraq really that big of a threat?...2 weeks after the war started we had their **** locked down, so no,they aren't that big of a threat. ur bro is a pawn in a war that exists solely because a son wanted to be like his daddy and goto war...regardless of how much of a reason they have ...(referring to bush)

Now our social security fund is completely depleted and we're 3-4 trillion in debt...all cuz we took place in a war with people who weren't even threatening our continent as a whole, 911 was a ***** don't get me wrong but it sure wasn't worth killing our nest egg in my opinion. stupid move by bush to stay over there wasting our ****ing money if you ask me.

You really shoulda told him not to go, why support sending your bro out takin orders from a guy who, in the middle of war, doubled enlisted people's prescription prices, even the injured people, and was against everyone in the line of fire wearing a vest.

I say you invite him over and show him that skill will beat big cornfed muscles everytime by methodically picking him apart and whipping his ass.

Actually, no...me and my family dont agree with the war. But he didnt have an option to go or not. He is doing his duty. And the point that you seem to be missing is that he and others out there are risking their lives everyday. Forget the war; pretend we werent in Iraq. Does it diminish the job they do everyday? To be on call, in the event that somebody decides to try and attack the US? And if that were to happen, to know that there are people that are willing to die in order for us to sleep safely at night?
No, I think this war is **** as well as the guy leading it. But I have ALWAYS had the upmost respect for the men and women who are ready to die for us. So focus on that point, instead of trying to preach to me about politics.
