Cutthroat 08-14-2006, 06:52 PM I'm 15 years old, and I can only bench press 180lbs, and I'm 5'11 and curl 50lbs with one arm. I got a new bench since all I had to increase my bench press by last year was 70lbs max. The problem is that it's an olympic bench and my feet can't entirely reach the ground. I sort of have to get on my tiptoes, does this affect my benching? Since I don't have my feet on the ground and all.
Smokin' 08-14-2006, 07:50 PM You cant curl 50 lbs with one arm...But yeah. IT doesn't matter. ALot of guys who have been benchpressing for years don't e ven rest there feet on the ground. THey have them in a kneeling position so there back doesn't arch and **** up. It will help your bench press.
lil rocky 08-14-2006, 08:04 PM i think it does matter because if you cant get that last rep up then you can dig your feet into the ground and it seems to kind of stabalize you or help you and about your feet not touching ground get some of your weights and stack them up so that your feet will be on something flat.

sleazyfellow 08-15-2006, 12:52 AM if my skinny as arm can curl a 40 pound weight then that means mostly anybody could, it really ****ed my arm up though and my elbow was badly sore, prolly due to me not curling it right or sumthing, imma righty and could only use my right with the 40, my left is completely ****, my wrist would prolly fall off trying to do it with my left...
JDizzle79 08-15-2006, 02:53 AM this thread just proves that smokin' spends way too much time on the computer and little to no time in the gym. in high scool when I first made the j.v. football team my freshman year, I couldn't punch myself out of a wet paper bag. that was over ten years ago. now that I'm in the military, on arm day, I finish with a 50lb set on biceps to 8. Like Versatile2k6 said, juts cuz you can't, doesn't mean others can't. stop posting and get your 'dustin diamond' looking ass in the gym.
NJFighter91 08-15-2006, 06:06 AM Get some cinderblocks or some plates and put you're feet on those. It might feel uncomfortable at first, but you'll get used to it.

Try benching with your feet on the top of the bench. It helps me lift more and keeps your back from arching. It is totally believable he can curl 50 lbs with one arm. yeah once i started putting my feet on top of the bench and stopped arching my back i started getting much better results

NJFighter91 08-15-2006, 02:05 PM Putting your feet on the bench is gonna lead you to injuries. It's very easy to tip over if you use heavy weight. And there's nothing wrong with an arch. With that, you use more power from your legs and lift more weight.

NJFighter91 08-15-2006, 10:15 PM Curling 50 is definately possible. When I used to weight lift and I maxed at 185 lbs. on the bench press but I could only curl 40 lbs. But at the time I didn't curl a lot. So it's definately possible.

Unless your biceps are twice the size of your triceps, which is opposite how they should be. I do 40 lb one-arm curls, isolated (not standing and cheating/leaning) and that's a fairly hard set, and I rep with 245 on the bench.
Rarely do I see anyone doing one-arm curls with 50s. If so, it's a big dude who can bench a HELL of a lot more than 180. So yeah, something's out of whack. Or he's doing one cheat curl with a 50 lb dumbell... hehe, maybe he's talking about that.

Cutthroat 08-16-2006, 07:44 PM I can curl 50lbs with one arm but it's my max (I started lifting when I was 14). My friend Albert can curl 65lbs with one arm he's 5'10 15, and weighs around 165. My forearms are pretty big, I'd say they're around 13 inches around or they might be bigger. I've got big muscles, but I'm just not that strong for some reason.

Right now I was trying to do 50lbs but I couldn't for some reason, I was only able to do 43lbs.
My friend kevin is skinny as hell but he can curl 40lbs.

well, I'm done arguing over this. I know what I can do and I see all sorts of people who are strong in one area and weak in others. anything is possible in the weight room if you are focused and dedicated. besides...I'm pretty quick for my size...I hit the bag regularly and play pick up hoops whenever I can on top of my weight lifting. lol...6'0', 175...thats alright if you like to play tennis, but I don't LIKE it as you mentioned. I'll leave you alone smokin...I rarely post anymore anyhow.

I'll try but I gotta borrow someone's phone or something cause I don't have a vid. camera on my phone. That's how my friend Alex and David are (Both 15) my friend Alex Bench presses 230 and my friend David benches 280, yet they can only curl 50lbs with one arm like me.

There's a component of lifting that used to be called neuromuscular programming. I don't know what they're calling it these days. It's training your brain to recruit the most amount of muscle fibers as possible to increase your strength without increasing your size. Powerlifters work on this, getting big AND increasing muscle recruitment. EDIT: I remember now. The thinking at the time was that it was accomplished through "super-slow reps," like 5-10 seconds up and 10-20 seconds down, with about half your max rep weight, and rep it out until you hit your physical pain threshhold. Very painful but it works great. Many bodybuilders do not work on this; it is possible to be big and not as strong as someone else with the same sized muscles. NMP can be trained in other ways, I'm sure: a male gymnast would be an excellent example of someone with a low-profile (efficient) physique -- opposite a powerlifter's build -- but excellent NMP.
Those guys who haul airplanes around in harnesses and bend nails with their fingers have highly-developed NMP.
BTW what's a cheat curl?
The ***** way. Bending or bucking your body to "jump" the weight up at the weak point(s) of the movement. Bad form.
