Children 'having sex at 11'


More than a quarter of 11-year-olds in the UK know someone their age who is having sex, according to a new survey.
The charity, Marie Stopes International, commissioned the study of 1,077 children aged from 11-15.

It intends to use the findings to win support for a new campaign it is running to supply any child logging onto its website with free condoms on request, which will be posted to them at home.

More than half of those surveyed did not know that condoms could prevent HIV while one in 10 believed the virus could be passed on through kissing.

The study also revealed that more young people were concerned about contracting a sexually transmitted infection or getting pregnant than they were about doing well at school.

Sam Guy, Marie Stopes International's Adolescent Advisor, said:, "Not only are young people unaware of the benefits of condoms, many are also too embarrassed to actually buy and use them.

"Marie Stopes International UK hopes to overcome these factors by encouraging young people to find out about condoms and become comfortable with them before they think about having sex."

Education concerns

He said one particularly worrying statistic was that even where young people had received sex education at school, their levels of awareness were not significantly higher.

Despite 77% saying they had some form of sex education at school, more than a quarter said they needed further information.

The survey results are being published in Sugar, a magazine for teenage girls.

Editor Claire Irvin said the survey proved children were still confused about sex and contraception.

"We know from the thousands of letters we get every day at Sugar that the message about safe sex is just not getting through," she said.

"Shocking results such as these help underline Sugar's message about sexual health and we will continue to give our readers the advice they need on safe sex when they are in a loving and trusting relationship and ready to have sex."

The charity said the purpose of the research was to investigate children's experiences of sex education and knowledge of sex, contraception and related issues.

Hypnosis doctor guilty of sex acts

A FORMER Launceston doctor was found guilty yesterday of sexually assaulting a patient while she was under hypnosis.

Neville Fernando, formerly of the Summerdale Medical Centre at Summerhill, was found guilty of professional misconduct between July 1996 and February 1997 by the Medical Complaints Tribunal.

It is the second time Dr Fernando has been in trouble with medical authorities.

The Medical Complaints Board of Victoria also made a finding against him concerning unprofessional conduct involving two female patients in November 2001.

He was reprimanded, required to have counselling, and to have a chaperone present when treating a female patient.

In the Launceston matter, the female patient told the tribunal Dr Fernando required her to undress while she was under hypnosis, touched her breasts and vagina and required her to touch herself.

He also made her stand naked before a mirror and commented on her body, placed her hand on the outside of his trousers over his erect penis and masturbated in front of her.

In its decision, the tribunal said Dr Fernando, who now practises in Victoria, was an unimpressive witness.

"The tribunal was firstly unimpressed by his demeanour as a witness," it said.

"He was not spontaneous in his answers to questions in cross-examination and his evidence lacked conviction.

"The tribunal gained the impression from Dr Fernando's demeanour and his answers to questions that he was less than truthful."

The tribunal is expected to reconvene in either April or May to decide action to be taken against Dr Fernando.

HAGERSTOWN, MD APRIL 2- Hagerstown police say the 10-year-old Hagerstown girl who gave birth to a stillborn baby on Tuesday, is expected home from the hospital on Wednesday, after undergoing medical procedures following a miscarriage.

The girl is expected to be okay. In the meantime, the investigation continues. Police are waiting to interview the girl regarding the suspected father, who police say may be a 15-year-old. If the girl agreed to sex, the partner can still be charged with second-degree rape, if the person who performed the act is at least four years older.

FRANCE -- Even jaded members of the French fashion world were taken aback when avant-garde designer Renault Reno unveiled his latest fashion design -- total nudity. Other than a tattoo of his "RR" logo on the left buttock of the models, they wore nothing. And the trend is catching on with the youth across the country.

Much to the dismay of the staff at Monmarte College, a clique of popular seniors decided to bare all when they returned to school from the Christmas holidays. The students were quickly covered in burlap and sent home, although their punishment has not stopped the trend from quickly spreading throughout the country.

"Young men and women are showing up wearing nothing but tattoos," declares Education Minister Jean-Luc Chiffey. "Morally, we French do not have a problem with nudity. We are not prudes like, say, the Americans. But our students' grades are dropping because nobody's paying attention in classes." Chiffey added, "And that includes the teachers."

Chiffey's own workload at the Ministry has suffered since he has decided to give this crisis his personal attention. Armed with an array of photographic equipment, Chiffey is going from school to school in an effort to stringently document every incident during this educational crisis, but some say he's focusing only on the girls.

The biggest opponent of this trend comes directly from Henri Mastey, the Minister of Standards, Health & Cleanliness, who says, "Not only is this new practice of nudity barbaric, it's extremely unsanitary."

Mastey asks, "Would you want to sit down on a bench that a naked football team had just sat on? I didn't think so."

When asked what prompted his new "minimalist" approach to fashion design, Reno comments, "I wanted to create something that would be innovative and in-your-face, but at the same time affordable for everyone."

Other designers have quickly followed suit, creating trademarked tattoos of their brand-name logos. But just as a fake "Rolex" watch can be purchased on the streets of New York for five dollars, so can any tattoo artist create a black market logo without paying any royalties.

These tattoo "knock-offs" are big business, but Reno says he's not concerned with rip-offs.

"People recognize quality work when they see it. Anyone with class can tell one of my original designs from a cheap imitation."

Reno is ecstatic about the reception his "nude fashion line" has been receiving.

"My reputation has been made. After this, I will be known as one of the most innovative designers the world has ever known."
