View Full Version : Why do UFC heavyweights seem to have bigger necks that boxing heavyweights platinummatt 08-02-2006, 04:22 PM ?????????????????????????? Thankyou jujitsujn 08-02-2006, 05:10 PM I think this is because a lot of them are grapplers. Even if they are not predominantly a grappler, they do practice a lot of grappling/wrestling. Wrestling/Jiu-jitsu/grappling requires a strong neck and shoulders and just practicing these things will further develop your neck. PunchDrunk 08-02-2006, 05:12 PM Yeah, it probably has a lot to do with their training. I'm also under the impression those guys work a lot harder... Heavyweight boxers look like fat slobs nowadays. :( platinummatt 08-02-2006, 05:55 PM but a big neck is important for boxing isnt it? i Ukr_Alex 08-02-2006, 06:11 PM Cause they fat! Honestly, a lot of these UFC guys look like they have a think layer of fat on top of their muscle...no cuts nothing, just fat looking bulk. yrrej 08-02-2006, 06:25 PM They are grapplers and, like pro football players, have been doing neck exercises their whole life. Big neck doesn't not guarantee a resistance to a KO, however. In wrestling, they believe where the head goes the body must follow, so the work to control their own (or the other guy's head). Many great durable boxers had scrawny necks, but hard heads apparently. platinummatt 08-02-2006, 06:28 PM surely stronger neck = takes more resistance from punch Ukr_Alex 08-02-2006, 06:33 PM surely stronger neck = takes more resistance from punch Well. Stronger neck muscle= stiffer neck. So instead of your head moving from the punch, and some of the punch enegry being dispensed that way your neck stays stiff and your head takes all of the impact. To be honest I never understood why stronger neck= more punch resitance  platinummatt 08-02-2006, 06:47 PM its to do with the speed I think or something. whats going to snap round faster. A giant muscly neck, or a tiny neck? Ukr_Alex 08-02-2006, 06:50 PM its to do with the speed I think or something. whats going to snap round faster. A giant muscly neck, or a tiny neck? ah yes... well I still believe that something like chin is what your born with. I personaly doubt that a guy that gets KTFO with a jab will be able to withstand a punch if he build a big neck. LionZionist 07-08-2007, 01:50 AM I know this thread is old as dirt, but I'm new and just browsing around and saw this, and being a competitive grappler, I figured I'll answer the question. Whether you want it to or not, grappling will develop your neck. Wrestlers work on it intentionally because you need to have a strong neck because you often bridge up on your neck with your weight + the weight of the dude on top of you all on your neck. I do submission wrestling and I noticed after maybe a month that my neck got a lot bigger. Too many reasons to list for why, but that's just the way it is. I wrestled for only 3 years and I built my neck up alot.I guess due to neck bridges, 17 and a half inch neck for a 5'5 frame. j 07-08-2007, 05:45 AM i cannot believe this was a real question! so this is a serious question? wow! no offence to my boy platinummut though. No1 07-08-2007, 08:07 AM Yeah, it probably has a lot to do with their training. I'm also under the impression those guys work a lot harder... Heavyweight boxers look like fat slobs nowadays. :( I no most heavyweights are fat but shannon briggs, wlad and peter arnt fat. Also tim sylvia is one fat cunt lol. platinummatt! 07-08-2007, 12:02 PM This was indeed a serious question as I found it strange as most boxers necks looked pretty normal and the UFC guys necks were massive. But looks like I got my answer. Kayo 07-08-2007, 02:06 PM its from wrestling, alot of people in UFC have been doing olympic freestyle wrestling since they were kids. One of the things you do to stop being pinned is bridge off of your neck which requires alot of neck strength. Jab89 07-08-2007, 05:54 PM its to do with the speed I think or something. whats going to snap round faster. A giant muscly neck, or a tiny neck? if u got a big neck your head will not fling back when you get hit as much then with a small neck, and the biggger neck with stop whiplash for most punchs as well as give you more resistence against concussions the neck absorbs some of the punch so it slows down yor brain from hitting your skull. |
