Sonny has been sick as hell since Saturday.
He's been in for numerous tests and still there is no definite diagnosis. They are scheduling more tests currently and hopefully they will figure it out.

Sonny, i hope that that you are feeling well soon. In the mean time, take care and let the wife spoil you a bit. :)

they thought he had some acute food poisoning at first but they think it is something else now. they've checked for gall bladder, stomach ulcers, and kidney problems. none of these appear to be the issue. it is something that they haven't figured out yet. they're scheduling yet another round of tests with a specialist.

i'll keep everyone posted.

i'm sure he appreciates the well wishes.

Thanks for the kind wishes everyone.

It has been a pretty crappy week. Unfortunate, because it comes on the heels of a pretty cool series of events.

So from the begining - A couple weeks ago I brought my daughter to a birthday party at the home of one of her classmates. I hung out because we really didn't know the family, and we are not the kind of parents who just dump our kids off with strangers. So anyway, the kids had a good time. The family had all sorts of animals including horses, goats, pigs, chickens, dogs, cats, frogs, etc. and the dad was in charge of the childrens games cake and ice cream, presents etc. So i am hanging out with the mom and a couple other parents. We're chatting, drinking and having some nice appetizers, and it was a nice afternoon all around. So about a week or 2 later I get a call from the mother of this child asking where I went to high school and if I had certain friends in school. After confirming her suspicion it turns out that we were old friends from middle school and actually fooled around a little back in the day. This lady actually still had old pictures of she and I and a bunch of our common friends. So we got together for lunch and had a real nice time. it was crazy because we had both lived in town for about 10 years and never knew it. On top of this pleasant surprise I also hooked up with another common friend who had beeen one of my closest and oldest friends from middle and high school. So last Saturday I went into Boston to meet my old buddy for lunch. We met at one of the nicest restaurants in the city and had a great meal. I had little neck clams over linguini and clam sauce with parmigiano cheese for my entree, Ummm, um :)

Ok, so had a great time catching up and reminiscing. Then i get in the car and head home. About 45 minutes later I have the most intense pain in my abdomin that I have ever had. It was brutal. I could hardly breath let alone drive. However, I was still a half hour from hiome. So I tried undoing my belt hoping that it was just gas. Of course that didn't help and every time I moved at all it felt like someone was driving a dagger into my side.

Anyway I get home and manage to ectricate myself from the car with great difficulty, and stagger into the house all doubled over and clutching my stomach. My feeling was to just go lay down and see if it goes away and if not call the doctor Monday...lol, gotta love the wives though, always looking out for us thickheaded men. She called the doctor and soon after had me loaded in the car and headed for the hospital. So i get there, dying every step of the way. The registering nurse does my paperwork real quick and I'm off to the E.R.

The wind up hooking me up to an IV for pain killers and taking blood, urine, doing several different scans, One involving muliple tags placed all over my body. Ok, so the Doc comes in and tells me he thinks I have gall bladder disease. (Funny thing about hospitals, I never noticed how often the ask to place you pain on a continuum from 1-10) Mine was about a 8.5-9 at it's very worst. Ok so the give me some medication through the IV and check back in a couple hours. I was still hurting. So they admit me to the hospital around 4 in the morning. I catch a few zz's and by 11:00 the next day i am getting an ultrasound to examine my gall bladder. Get back to my room, and I have a half dozen visiters; several friends and a few people from my church. We chatted and watched the end of the British open. I was pulling for Chris DiMarco but Tiger played great and deserved to win. To my dismay Fiesty never came to visit. :( - just kidding Fiesty ;)

Ok, so the doc finally comes in and tells me that the ultrasound reveiled no problem with my gall bladder and he thinks it might be toxic food poisoning which should make its way through my system w/i a couple days.

Ok, Cool!! I'm psyched! This is the best possible news. No real problem just need to be more caerful eating shell fish from now on. :D

The send me home Sunday night with instructions to drink plenty of fluids and have a bland, almost liquid diet for the next couple days. The also say to come back if the pain isn't gone in 2 days or if it gets worse.

Monday the pain felt a little worse but i wasn't too concerned. Again the wife stepped in and called the doc. She got me an apt. for Tuesday morning. So i go in and she tells me that she wants me to go in for a CAT scan to rule out apendicites(sp), intestinal blockage and kidney stones. So I go in and you have to drink these 2 quart sive bottles of barium before a CT scan, and that **** tastes like a chalkdust milkshake...NASTY! So i finally get in and they hook you up to an IV pump some **** into your system and run you through this machine that is blinking the radioactive danger sign while you are in there and the technicians are safely out of the room. Lol, makes you wonder!!...

Ok so the test results come back in a few hours and my Doc calls to say all looks well with the appendix and kidney. OK SO WHAT THE **** IS IT!!! This is getting tedious! She schedules another appointmetn for today and gives me some nexium for acid reflux. She now thinks it might be an intestinal ulcer. The next step is she wants to get me in to a gastrointerologist (stomach and intestines specialist. So I am still in pain and still have no solid diagnosis. The good news is I am finally back on solid food.

I'll keep ya'll advised of my progess as I learn more. For the record my pain is down to a 6.5-7 so it is managable for the moment, but I'll be happy when I know what is actually wrong and can start treating it. Having the pain be completely gone would be nice as well.

Thanks again folks and God Bless.

Thanks for the kind wishes everyone.

Get back to my room, and I have a half dozen visiters; several friends and a few people from my church. We chatted and watched the end of the British open. I was pulling for Chris DiMarco but Tiger played great and deserved to win. To my dismay Fiesty never came to visit. - just kidding Fiesty

Thanks again folks and God Bless.
First, I DID make you a thread!!!!!!!! *sheesh* :D
Second, I didn't even know you were in the hospital until your wife called and told me it was acute food poisoning. i figured that wasn't too serious and you would be home shortly. :o
PLUS u didn't visit me when i was in the hospital for 3 days due to gallbladder surgery. lol! :p i PROMISE next time u r in the hospital I will come visit. ok? :)

let me know when they get you in with the specialist to rule out the intestinal ulcer or whatever.

only one way to solve this type of problem...........MUD WRESTLING!!!!!!

Mud Wrestling a pregnant woman who is also my sister..Um, no I don't think so.

For the record Fiesty, I did go to the hospital to visit you when I heard you were there but you had already been discharged.

Anyway, my pain is somewhat reduced today, which is good. I've been taking the nexium which is working so I have this theory: I did get toxic food poisoning from the little necks which inflamed the intestinal ulcer. We'll see if my theory holds up when I go to the specialist. :D

And thanks for the thread.

very possible. it certainly isn't food poisoning by itself. this is day 8 of illness.

i wonder how an intestinal ulcer differs from a stomach ulcer (obviously the location), but i wonder if there are different implications (for severity of pain and treatment). hmmmm.

Well, I'm just back from the hospital and wanted to say thanks for all the kind regards. I haven't even read them all yet but I will. I am soooo glad to be home. I HATE the hospital. Everything about SUCKS!! The nurses smell, the beds are small and uncomfortable. people are coming in every hour sticking needles in you, taking blood and all sorts of other crap.

It occurrs to me that I never did explain what the problem was last month when I was hurting so I will try to give a brief explanation of that and this episode.

Let me start by saying that I am 39 years old and in all that time, prior to last month, I was in the hospital 1 time. Once! When I was 5 years old. I got hit by a car and it ran my ankle over. So when I was 5 I spent some time in the hospital getting reconstructive surgery on my ankle.

In the next 34 years I have not spent a day in the hospital...until last month.

If you recall I was suffering from intense abdominal pain at that time. They took all kinds of X-rays, CAT-scans, ultrasounds, biopsies etc. and finally determined it was GERD, a fancy name for Acid Reflux. They prescribed Nexium and a slight dietary change and all has been well...until last Saturday September 9th.

I started feeling pretty crappy that morning. Little bit of a fever, a little achy, etc. Before the afternoon was over my fever had climbed to 103.3, I had the intense shivers and cold sweats, I was throwing up, and was horribly dehydrated. I stayed in bed the next few days and tried to sweat it out but it just got worse. By the time I went to the hospital last Tuesday my fever was up to 104.7  When I got to the hospital I was in septic shock. My blood pressure was down below 70 and and my blood flow and circulation was dangerously low. I was in a total systemic break down. My liver, kidneys, urinary tract were all in destress and I had a really packed in pneumonia in my lungs. On top of everything I had the worse throbbing headache I've ever had. They pumped me full of fluids and morphine as well as antibiotics for about a week and they had me on oxygen.

As the tests started coming in it appeared that the pnemonia was caused by a combination of what is known as group G strep and legionnaires disease. What can I say, I'm a businessman, I've got to travel sometimes. :)

On Sunday my wife came to visit and I banged her in the hospital room. It did wonders for my moral but I could barely breath after and the nurse actually came in afterwards because she thought I was in distress. :p

So I'm home now and they've got me on antibiotics and rest. I have a doctors note not to go back to work for 3 weeks but I don't know if I can stand to take that long off. I just need to take it easy and get back into the swing of things slowly.
