My first question is which way is better to throw hooks? Should I throw them out with my fist being vertical or horizontal? The reason I'm asking is because some people say it's better to have it go out horizontal but other people I've talked to say that it's safer to throw them vertically (to prevent from clipping your last two knuckles). Does one type of execution have an advantage over the other or are some of my friends misinformed about the proper way to throw a hook?
My other question is about boxing professionally. I understand that maybe 1% of fighters make the huge amounts of money...but hypothetically, if you were starting out in the pros with some experience in the amateurs would you be able to make a moderately comfortable living? (As in having relatively few expenses and already affordable living space).
If anyone can help, many thanks :)

If you were starting out in the pros, you would make close to no money for living. You would make some money, but not enough to support yourself well.
You could self manage and self train so those 20-40 percent of the money is yours but you still gotta pay for promotions. Even with that, it's hard to make a good living.

With the hook, it's personal preference. I tend to hold my fist vertical when I'm up real close to my opponent, like in a clinch, pull back and throw kinda situation. Longer hooks, i use the horisontal approach, since it's easier to hit cleanly, and I get a little more accuracy that way also.

I find I get a better range with my palm facing towards me, but the hooks power is better with it facing the ground compared to a longer range. Also with palm facing floor the whole fist can land along the jaw

Tell Marciano not to throw hooks with his fist horizontal. No, you can't live comfortably from boxing alone at first, unless you are former US Olympic boxer. Otherwise, you will need a day job.
