shadow boxing alone will get you toned (if you do it a lot)

Thats nowhere near enough cardio. Start doing some roadwork or skipping. That will trim the fat off. To tone your muscles, do some bodyweight exercises like press-ups.

I'm not saying you should; you should be doing everything. Definately add the running.

If you get an answer that sounds a little to categorical and SIMPLIFIED, then that's because they are. ;)

In reality it depends on intensity and duration. How hard, and for how long. If it's about burning fat, the more intense you work out, the faster you burn calories. The longer you work out, the more calories.

So if you want to hit the bag until you've burned as many calories as you would have spent on your run, the end result will be the same.

Ultimately though, all this bull**** about which exercise will "tone" (what's the exact definition of this term anyway?), and which will burn fat is misplaced if you fail to take your diet into consideration. If you eat the wrong stuff, and/or too much, you can do all the toning exercises you want, you'll stay (or become) a pudgy dude without a clue. It's all about the relationship between your diet, and the amount of exercise you do.

To sum up; yes you can leave out the running, but you'll have to replace it with something else, and you'll probably be surprised how many rounds of shadowboxing it will take to replace a 5 mile run. ;)
