i was wondering if lifting free weights would have any long term affects on me like on my joints when i get older. thats why i thought bodyweight and elastic bands would be better on my joints but i wasnt sure can anybody clear this up for me. sorry about the font i couldnt get it to change

Im 90% sure on this, If you do free weights then its only going to affect you if you have bad technique or if you do exercises that puts the barbell over your head while standing up and you havent stopped growing cus it damages your spine.

If you do it with proper technique (don't put on too much weight before you master the technique), and do joint mobility and stretching, it will have lasting effects of increased strength, from your bones to your muscles and joints. Scary stuff, right?

Yeah, if you haven't stopped growing, the area where the bones haven't yet fused could easily break from using weights that are too heavy. People lift heavier weights as their bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles mature. That's why most of the best-looking bodybuilders are older guys. It takes time. There is also the problem of pre-arthritic changes in the joints from too much weight pressing the bony surfaces of the joint together, scarring the joints and impeding the blood supply, which will catch up with you in 20 - 30 years.
