Got back from seeing the 300 at a midnight showing about 30 minutes ago.... Good movie. I got about what I expected but that's not to say it was a bad movie. It was entertaining, well directed, gruesome, etc... I recomend it to anybody who enjoyed Sin City and even some who didn't.

I thought 300 was just okay. The fighting scenes were entertaining, but it wasnt very well put together for me. Sin City is far superior imo.

Scanner darkly probably would have been better with out the arty look,it had pretty good performances.

I eventually watched Scanner Darkly last night. I thought it was very good.
Unusual, but it was quite thought provoking and kinda funny.

Im guessing the reason it was all animated related to the hallucinogenic drugs involved in the story. Basically everyone was on it, and they werent sure what was real and what wasnt.

Also, like cartoons, they can show violence and make it entertaining. In this film there was serious drug addiction, but they made it quite amusing.
It was both real and unreal at the same time.

SCANNER DARKLY. I very much recommend it if ur bored of the usual hollywood crap.

youre right about it possibly could have been too depressing w/o the animated look, but then theres Fear and Loathing which pulled it off.I just would have loved to see Robert Downey's performance w/o the animated stuff, and Im a big animation fan.

The films very true to the book, very true,I was surprised.I def recommend the book to anyone who wants to check (also check out VALIS,its on another level)

talking about the depressing stuff though, the author Philip K Dick lived thru that, in the credit of the film as well as in the book theres a dedication to a bunch of friends who died in one way or another a drug related death, so maybe being more realistic would have been truer to the intentions of Phillip K.

reardless I dont want to sound negative, I did enjoy the film, and its a very original work that deserves praise.

Well TMNT got a 13% on Rotten Tomatoes so I might just have to wait until it drops on DVD. The clips look amazing, but I hear the script has no humor, and the plot is horrible. I was hoping it would be as good as the original, which was dark and funny.

I do still want to see Reign On Me though. That looks like it will be very good.

Watched TMNT since I loved the turtles as a kid. Visually, the movie was incredible. Some of the best animation I have ever seen. Good fight scenes too, especially a certain scene on a rooftop in the rain which was amazing. The plot was crap for the most part though, and it wasnt funny.

Pretty good overall.

Yeah thats along the lines of what I meant, It sucked in terms of what I was expecting. They tried to add a story and it didnt work at all for me,the comic was short and sweet.

Also they left out some narration that enhanced the comic, and probably would have helped the movie.

cool.Dont think I'll watch in theaters but looking forward to wathcing it on DVD.

I read that the producers/director,were held back by alot of restrictions. For example, for when the movie is shown in europe, they cant use the word "Ninja" because its banned or something,I guess thats why its been advertised as "TMNT".Also one of the turtles cant use his weapons on screen(wtf) for the same reason,.

I read the producers/director wanted to make an R rated sequel, but i think pg13 is all they'll let them get away with or something.

Yes, for some reason nunchucks are illegal in the UK from what I hear, so they can only show glimpses of Michaelangelo's fighting with them. I would love for the sequel to atleast be pg-13, but the money mostly comes from the kids. A lot of people dont know the original comics were dark and violent.

The movie that i see as the greatest of all time , might be "Dog Day Afternoon" starring Al Pacino and John Cazale. its a seventies movie about 2 vietnam vets trying to rob a bank. but everything goes wrong. its a crime-drama but i also like how it adds some comedy here and there too. but overall the movie is classic early pacino.
here are my top 10 movies::

2.raging bull
3.godfather part 2
4.the warriors ( i kno , but i lov the movie )
5.goodfellas
6.scent of a woman
7.silence of the lambs
8.deer hunter

10.casino ( coulndt think of better)

Grindhouse was ****ing great. I read a lot of bad things about Death Proof and they all must have been written by Tarantino haters because it was great. Who cares about a lot of dialouge. Tarantino writes it with style, and the buildup to the car scenes is worth it.

Brilliantly made, great acting, very understated but brilliant special effects.

In fact, a film like The Day After Tomorow, was all special effects and a ****ty storyline. U saw all the best parts in the trailer.
Children of Men is how a apocolyptic film should be...gritty and with special effects that compliment the story, not replace it.

review

Some movies make us laugh, some make us cry. Other movies though, give us an experience that can change our lives forever. No Holds Barred is the pinnacle of movie perfection. I had become distraught with movies, and life in general. Nothing was the same anymore, Hulk Hogan had been off our TVs for a couple years, and I needed some guidance. I stumbled across these "Why Hasn't Hogan Won an Oscar" threads, and am now filled with hope.
I got on my bicycle and pedaled my way to the nearest video store. I decided to give life one last chance, and thought if anything could save me, it was Hulk Hogan. I put it in my VCR and I laughed, I cried, and was taken on an emotional roller coaster. By the end of the film, I had even attempted to rip my own shirt off.... until my grandma stopped me. After that experience, I felt the Hulkamania flowing through my veins, and the world didn't seem so dark. If any movie could ever change your life, it has to be this. The Godfather will just make you want to throw up like you've eaten a bucket of puke, but No Holds Barred has the power to bring nations together.

To see No Holds Barred will shatter your worldly views of cinema and turn you into an aficionado. No Holds Barred is quite simply, the greatest film of all time. It manages to mix action, comedy, drama, suspense, and happiness into one magnificent piece of art. Hulkamania flows through this film breathing life into every scene. Clearly, The Godfather pales in comparison. The dark dreary colours masking the poor set design, the horrid acting, the weak plot; it all is just pathetic. Compare this with No Holds Barred: Beautifully constructed set designs, bright, fanciful colours, superb Oscar-quality acting, and a plot which you can easily become absorbed in. Every second of this film you spend on the edge of your seat in anticipation of the Hulkster beating someone down, either verbally or physically.

If any of you haven't seen "The lives of others" yet make sure you do when its out on dvd - won the oscar for best foreign film (which probably means BEST film) over Pan's labyrinth and it is outstanding. The lead actor has recently passed away which is very sad, given his performance in the film.

Another great foreign film tainted with tragedy is the return (a russian flick). One of the child leads in this psycological drama died weeks before the film made a big splash at the venice film festival.

I'm a big transformers fan as you can tell from my username, but I didn't really think much of the film. It concentrated far too much on the humans and didn't even bother developing personalities for the transformers. Starscream, one of the best characters in the original show, said 4 words in the entire movie.

i watched a film called Stander last night. it's very good, and almost all true. it's based on the life of andre stander, a south african police captain who gets disgusted with the racist south african govt and becomes a criminal. i really really enjoyed this film. also it has debra kara unger in it, she's an incredibly beautiful woman, and yes, she does a nude scene. she does nudity in every film she's been in except in the hurricane

Magnolia is a very interesting film, and tom cruises only good performance EVER. He rocks as the male self help guy. "Tame the c**t!".

I watched the beat that my heart skipped last night, a french film about a fella who is a property owner/thug and retakes up the piano (his mum was a concert pianist). It wasn't amazing, but it had a kickass soundtrack, a mixture of classical piano music and techno or something other.

Next on my list is

Ratatouille

i've seen sunshine, it's very good, and like stander it has debra kara unger in it ( God, she is beautiful... i'm seconds away from posting a pic here)

http://www.geocities.com/deborahkaraunger2/pictures/006.jpg

mmm, i have a hunger for deborah unger. i don't even like blondes but she's just too beautiful.... anyways, uh, what were we talking about? oh yeah, sunshine. i first saw it in a indie theather in saskatoon when i was going to university. really absorbing film, great performances by ralph fiennes -- he plays several characters in the film, but the last one is his best acting. actually, this film and stander are very similar in quality, except u get to see a lil more of debra kara unger in sunshine. she does not have a shaven haven. man it's hard to concentrate on anything with women like her around, that's probably my one beef with a lot of these films, the women are too beautiful, i can't concentrate on the story, but anyway, optimus ginge, if u like stander, u'll like sunshine

Latest 3 films watched

Ratatouille - only just about worth watching. it wasn't funny, and the story was pants. Good animation though, even if they tried to ape aardman style a wee bit.

A very long engagement - decent film, it's got audrey tatou's ass in it and a good narrative, slowly revealing a bit more about what happened. It can't have been that good however, because i find the first world war fasciniating and this didn't really catch my imagination. On that note, make sure you read Birdsong by Sebastien Faulks.

This is England - A pretty cool film about a young lad growing up in t'north during the rise of the skinhead culture of the 80s. The first half hour is ****ing brilliant, you really feel like you're watching life unfold before your eyes. I didn't much care for the scenes towards the end, they detracted a little from the overall tone.

here's another film none of u have ever heard of. i watched one called Aimee and Jaguar a few nights ago. it's a beautiful story about two very hot, and i mean physically perfect when i say hot, german lesbians in 1944 who fall in love with each other. it's quite a beautiful film, even though the ending is a little predictable

last night i also saw a low budget canadian indie film ( yeah, i know, i watch a lot of these ) called perfect pie. it's a little slow moving but the characters are psychologically interesting. also the town featured in the film is very much like a smaller version of where i live ( imagine the redneck violence in the film boys don't cry - where i live is just like that )

thanks for the reviews filth.

Latest viewings

Sunshine - Decent enough movie but not hard to see why it flopped. A very slow moving sci-fi, which builds good tension over an hour or so, before ruingin it by introducing a new character that changes the whole tone of the piece, much like the change in dusk til dawn but not nearly as effective.

A man for all seasons - a pretty good historical movie from the 60s detailing the demise of Thomas More during the reign of henry VIII. Its directly from a play, which shows in excellent dialogue but perhaps limited use of the uniqueness of cinema. Worth a look if you'd like to learn about british history a little.

The wind that shakes the barley - Excellent film, apart from the first 15 mins which were a bit sensationalised (Ken Loach is a raving liberal so its to be expected). A really good exploration of what happens when an army wants to become a government - very topical and historically accurate to boot.

Bourne Ultimatum - Ok, here goes. I didn't find the film THAT exciting. It lacked the intrigue of the first film (and the second) - I just didn't really care what bournes origins were. having said that, as an exposition of an action film it should be studied in film schools - there are no unnecessary lulls in the pace, and no unnecessary action either. Everyone else loved this movie, including my gf who isn't into action flicks.

Not quite as good as i thought it was going to be.

And the Simpsons was better than i thought it would be.

Die Hard 4 was as i expected it to be, enjoyable, but the young kid old cop thing was annoying. Plus every action sequence was stolen from other films.

last night i watched Zodiac. good film, but i've been fascinated with the Zodiac killer since i was a kid. The film has Clea Duvall in it, i love Clea Duvall. Anyway, i recommend the Zodiac, if u're looking for action u'll get bored but it's a good fact based drama.

Also watched The SWeet Hereafter ( yeah, another indie canadian film by atom egoyan). i'm a big fan of egoyan's work, he makes great films. This one is the kind of film that really makes u think, well, maybe just me, but it really made me think. It has some sexual content also, involving sara polley, i love sara polley ( she's the hot blonde in my sig, the one the black pug is trying to lick her face ), anyway, she ****s her daddy in the film. There's also another really good scene with this milf in a hotel room. anyways, i recommend this film, thwe scenes with the lawyer and his incredibly beautiful druggie daughter are also really fantastic

anyways, the film is really addicting, it interviews a bunch of old veterans and they talk about seeing their buddies faces getting burned by flame throwers and killing japanese. there's alot of old film footage of gory wounds and dead bodies and such, it really gives u the feel of what real war is like. one of the veterans, he was from alabama, and he was talking about one of his buddies and he said the guys' name and then he said " but we called him Wanky " - i think he meant Winky, but because of his accent it sounds like Wanky. it made me laugh when he said that. anyway, even though i haven't had much sleep for a couple days, i still recommend this film even though there's absolutley no sex in it

i finally watched 28 days later last night, well, ok, saturday night / sunday morning. pretty good film, had some original ideas - i liked the fast zombies and the part with the crow, some of the film was a little predictable though, but i guess i've seen a LOT of horror films. i also didn't expect the hero - civilian murphy, the guy who looks like kaygay, to change as much as he did near the end ( i'm trying to say this without giving away the end of the film ) but he was like a cornered animal. i liked the film, even though it's not as good as the measuring stick for all new zombie films - Dawn of the Dead 2004. Dawn has better characters, though i liked the black nurse chick, and when i watched Dawn i really was waiting to see if they all died at the end, where as with 28 days i pretty much knew how it would turn out. Now, i'll have to see the 2nd film, i've heard it's pretty good also

watched brokedown palace last night. i'd remembered seeing part of it before and remembered it was kinda lame and wasn't gonna watch it, until i remembered it has kate beckinsale in it, in one of her early roles before she was famous. the film isn't that great, it has some good parts about friendship being a source of strength in tough times, and stuff about girls being young and stupid, and the acting is good, but it's the kind of film u can go take a **** and miss half an hour of it ( yes, i did ) and not really be bothered, or bovvered, as robin reid would say. the biggest thing this film made me realize is that in the film claire danes is supposed to be the "pretty one" of the two friends and beckinsale the "Ugly" one, but the reality is, danes is an attractive woman, but beckinsale trying to look less attractive and plain, makes danes look like dog****. i found the the thaliand women's prison uniforms extremely sexy on both beckinsale ( i'm getting the horn just thinking about this) and on danes. also for most of the film u can see the women's pretty feet, apparently they don't wear shoes in women's prison in thailand - i'm starting to like thailand more and more. the film is worth seeing just to look at the 27 year old kate beckinsale with no makeup

Yeah, layer cake is a solid movie.I thought the ending was only so-so, but I guess it fits the premise.

Wathced The Mist, decent movie. If you love King you'll love the film, it seems like a very faithful adaptation, but I dont love king.

Worthy noting... easily:

No Country For Old Men is one of the greatest movies I've seen in years. Everything about it was brilliant. While most people wont get many of the subtle points dealing with consequence, truth, good/evil, the passing of time, and pretty much anything that happened.. it was fantastic.

One of the few times a book has ever translated so well onto screen. The Coen brothers did a great job putting McCarthy's work up on screen. Fantastic.

I need to watch Superbad again. The theater was so loud when I went, I know I missed a lot of punchlines.

Meet The Spartans was the worst movie I've ever seen. I usually wouldnt watch it, but it was Midnight, I didnt pay for the ticket, and nothing else was playing.

watched " the good girl" a couple nights ago. it has jennifer aniston in it, and one really good scene where she's getting slammed into the headboard in a motel room and u can see her nipples... anyways, the film is decent, and aniston's performance is excellent, she's a small town southern girl and does a very good job of making u forget she's jennifur aniston - especially this one part where she says how weed is killing her unborn children and sounds like a dumb redneck. overall the acting is very good, the film is alright, u'll get one good :wank: out of it

Watched Vantage Point last night.

Was really looking forward to it.............then quite let down. The story line sounds really good but it was nowhere near as good as I thought it would be. It's basically about an assassination attempt on the president and how it is seen from 8 different peoples point of view. So when you see something and then the film ends up rewinding every 20 minutes to show you it all again from a different angle it all gets quite boring. Not too bad though. I was just hoping it would be better.

Overall - 6/10

Unanswered questions? Like what? It seemed pretty easy to follow, and using small assumptions to fill in the gaps.

It sucked btw. I imagine seeing it in an Imax or something would be cool, but past that I'd never recommend it to anybody.

Been watching a lot of movies lately though. Gone Baby Gone was good, as was The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. I loved Charlie Wilson's War, but mostly just because PSH is a fantastic actor.

I watched Eastern Promises for the first time tonight and I really enjoyed it. I would recommend anyone who likes their gangstar movies to check it out. It is a slow paced, gritty film, but one which really builds towards the end and shocked the hell out of me. It is gruesome on occasions which is needed if the true horrors of life in the Russian mafia are going to be fairly represented. I would probably have it in my top five favourite gangstar movies of all time and just wondered if everyone else who has seen it enjoyed it as much as me.

i liked cloverfield, but not as a horror film, i liked the first half better, with the yuppie Rob and his big ego, and the drama at the party, and mostly i liked the geek buddy with the unbelievably annoying voice and how he was always hitting on marlene and she wasn't interested. i have yuppie friends exactly like the ones in the film and i'm the annoying guy who doesn't fit in.

i watched About Schmidt last night, best performance from jack nicholson i've seen in a long time where he wasn't just being himself and telling someone to " hold it between their knees". Generally good performances from all the characters, the fat, abrasive mother in law, Randy, the son in law with his room full of perfect attendance trophies, and Jeannie, who always gets the short stick in life. Really good film about how lots of upper middle class people think they're winners and so far above everyone else when really they find out they are losers

been watching jack ketchum films lately, low budget films made from ketchum's horror novels:

the girl next door

really, really disturbing film. it's a true story only slightly changed from the actual events - the torture and murder of silvia likens in indianapolis in 1965 . very well made film that doesn't glorify the killers at all, very good characters and well written script. this film is ****ing nasty though, a little more depressing than boys don't cry and as much of a downer

the lost

a good small town story of a wannabe elvis who pokes all the cute birds in the town. really great characters also, especially this 18 year old ( sally ) who likes ****ing 60 year old men and Jen. i really liked Jen's big milk white ass and how she always had bruises on her porcelian skin

There was a certian era in movies that moved me

Some of the good movies from that time were Godfather I(and II) Jaws and The Sting. I believe all were recognized by the Oscars when it still meant something.

Are they any movies where part 2 and 3 are better than part 1? I haven't seen it.

Are there any remakes better than the original? The only one I can think of is the Fugitive but it was remade from a tv show.

Totally agree.... GODFATHER (and with the UNTOUCHABLE film) are f**kin great classic mafia/gang/plain-shoot-em-up movies with the soul and the heart that will still reel you in if you watch it again after all those years...thats jus how god it is....Coppola and Puzo outdid themselves with this...

Prison Break is a nice movie.

err...Kissluo my man.... Prison Break is a TV series... :D

Spiderman 2 are widely considered as better than the first one, The Godfather Part II :)

Remakes: The Thing, Scarface and Inglorious Basterds :)

My top 10 would have to be:

1) GoodFellas
2) Heat
3) Blade Runner
4) The Thin Red Line
5) Apocalypse Now
6) Inception
7) Raiders of the Lost Ark
8) Memento
9) Training Day/No Country for Old Men
10) Zulu

I'm a huge, huge film fan, my favourite actors would have to be:

1) Tom Hardy
2) Robert De Niro
3) John Cusack
4) Mark Strong
5) Christian Bale
6) Josh Brolin
7) Sam Rockwell
8) Joaquin Phoenix
9) Harrison Ford
10) Many actors are competing for this place right now, too many to list. I'll have to wait and see who gets it in the end.

It's too hard to pick just 10. I watch tons of movies & could never really pick an all time favorite so my list will be of movies I really love.

1. Tombstone
2. Silver Bullet
3. Juice
4. The Warriors
5. In Too Deep
6. Enter the Dragon
7. Fist of Legend
8. Saw
9. Lost Boys
10. Full Metal Jacket
11. Platoon
12. I Saw the Devil
13. Shaw Shank Redemption
14. Heartbreak Ridge
15. Training Day
16. Million Dollar Baby
17. Bad Santa
18. The Great White Hype
19. Halloween (Rob Zombie remake & original)
20. Nightmare on Elm Street/Friday the 13th (I love them equally)

I can do this forever so I'll stop here. I could really get into horror, which is my personal favorite, but I wanted to mixed it up a little.
