View Full Version : Styles for a Tall Fighter
NJFighter91 06-24-2006, 09:48 AM I'm pretty tall compared to the guys at my gym. What kind of style should I use against them. I'm new and all I do for now is try to use my reach.
And for the opponenets who bob and weave a lot, what is good against that?
ferocity 06-24-2006, 09:56 AM chose which ever style works for you, tall fighters for their division, oscar larios, thomas hearns, bob foster, rafael ruelas, deigo corrales, nickaluv valuev, and others im forgetting to mention.
NJFighter91 06-24-2006, 11:08 AM Question, for bobbing and weaving, does your hands have to be both by your chin?
LOLORSKATES 06-24-2006, 11:44 AM Well I would keep my hands up when you bob and weave, because you can parry or catch anything that might actually hit you. You'll eat leather, if you don't keep em up.
Evil_Meat 06-24-2006, 12:58 PM Don't stand there and bob and weave when your the taller fighter, work on becoming light on you feet and move side to side. A very important thing you must develop is a heavy jab, when someone comes at juke over to one side and jab. You should watch Lennox Lewis and Vitali Klitchko fight, it will give you a good idea on how to take advantage of your size. (A wide stance)

Ok, I actually downloaded some Lennox Lewis fights because I know that he's a taller fighter so I could learn from him.:) What about Ali, I know he was tall but should I try to study his style, or no, because he used mroe speed than his size...I think:p
Evil_Meat 06-24-2006, 01:43 PM u'll definetely get ur ass kicked hard it u try and fight like ali, just watch fighters like Vitali and Lennox
LightsOut Le 06-24-2006, 06:05 PM diego corrales does a good job and keeping people at the end of his punches...i fight like him cause im sort of tall and lengthy...just pop your jab they cant get inside fi they cant get past your jab...if they bob and weave alot..throw fients and time it so you can hit them with the jab everytime...1's and 2's

Yeah, don't ever try to fight Ali. His style is unique and will only work for him because he had natural talent.

Sorry I meant don't ever try to fight LIKE Ali.
Zigga 06-24-2006, 08:44 PM 1)If ur a tall fighter then u should concentrate on keeping in the middle of the ring.
2)Keep him at a distance long range with good use of the jab
3)Straight punching will allow you to use ur height and reach
4)dont give up ur height
5)Make the smaller fighter pay evertime he comes in or if he is going to attack and u read this, take a step back and u dicktate when to exchange blows.
speedoverpower0 06-25-2006, 03:22 AM Do you think a smaller fighter could fight like this too or should I be a bit more of a in out fighter, (Dont want to take all the attention off NJ by the way)
Zigga 06-25-2006, 10:24 AM Its up to u, but why would u wanna be a in out fighter if ur fighting tall opponenets, u probably just took a couple of shots to get in on the inside and now u gotta stay there and out work the taller guy and be stronger in that position. Well this is how i fight anyway.
1)Always keep a moving target, using the feet and movement from the waist, never give them a static head.
2)try and draw his lead by feinting, step inside and counter to the body and head.
3)use the ring to cut him off in corners:move side ways as well as in a straight line.
4)I usually pressure the taller guys by coming forward hard and not giving them too much time to box and make them fight my fight
speedoverpower0 06-25-2006, 06:23 PM alright that sounds good, so basicly control the fight and get him into corners and smack him hard on the inside

A taller boxer and who actually knows how to box would just use lateral movement and try to get you off of him with combos. Try to go at an angle away from their strong hand so you don't walk into something you'll regret.

Good point i forgot to mention that u shouldnt come in, in straight lines, use angles and be deceptive by going through the gears, changing tempo etc.
shortright 06-25-2006, 09:24 PM watch hopkins, use jab and lead right stand striaght and use your height
NJFighter91 06-25-2006, 09:36 PM So basically a hard jab and straight right is good? How can I use height against someone who is shorter and faster and bobs and weaves a lot?

check out a paul williams fight, or against martysee you can see what he should have done instead of what he did. also look how williams uses his jab and right hand he got skills, but also look how he doesn't have an inside game for tall fighter, then you go watch a rafael ruels fight, he was tall for his weight class and he could fight on the inside just as good as any fighter at the time. if you can get ruelas v. pendalton you will see what guts are all about.
Evil_Meat 06-25-2006, 10:04 PM against a smaller fighter... good jab and very straight righthands on the outside, and right uppercuts on the inside... Just watch the Lewis and Tyson fight. If only every fight would be as easy for u as it was for Lewis.

cobracore 06-26-2006, 11:33 AM To fight a bobbing weaving guy, time your shots so he moves his head into the place where you punch. YOu have to know the speed of your punches to do this.
Jab to the body. They weave their heads but not their body's. After you jab a few times to the body, the hands will come down, throw a cross or a jab to the head again.
Mix up your shots. Throw hooks when they don't expect them.
On the inside, go for uppercuts. Push them away - stay on the outside, don't be afraid to be rough to get there. IF their on the inside with you make them uncomfortable. Elbows, headbutts, shoves. Those will effect him psychologically, and he will be afraid to come in.

this is a great post and it has great advice, but be smart about the small annoying headbutts, and use your forearm more instead of ur elbow :D

Hard Boiled HK 06-26-2006, 08:49 PM Firefox???
It's much better than Internet Explorer in terms of security and speed. You should give it a try.
Evil_Meat 06-26-2006, 10:12 PM remember without complete composure none of this will work
hemichromis 06-27-2006, 02:13 AM if your tall learn to shovelhook they work great if someone tries to get close especcially if they bob and weave
Hunna 06-28-2006, 10:49 AM Yeah, don't ever try to fight Ali. His style is unique and will only work for him because he had natural talent.
