View Full Version : Strengthening the Core
NJFighter91 06-18-2006, 02:04 PM I know that abs are one of the most important muscles that have to be worked and strengthened for boxing. But whenever I do them, it hurts my lower back. So that means that I have a lower back. But for the past 3-4 weeks, everyday I do 30 minutes of stretching and working my lower back but I still can't do crunches, situps, etc.
Any advice?
Larry Merchant 06-18-2006, 02:13 PM just keep working at it man... pain will go away.... try some leg lifts
eazy_mas 06-18-2006, 03:24 PM try doing them on soft floor mate or what Larry Merchant suggest it.
usually because you dont have streghth in your other muscle or the way you excute it is incorrect.

I can't do those because I get pains in my lower back.
Even on a soft floor, it still hurts my back.
try doing them on an exercise ball it might be cause your doing them on a hard surface that its hurting your back
or do them on something like this

u might wanna look into an ab lounge or ab lounge pro!
NJFighter91 06-18-2006, 04:52 PM On a medicine ball, I still get the pains, and on the decline situp thing, it's worse than on a flat surface.
PunchDrunk 06-18-2006, 05:04 PM Why doesn't that tell you (or everyone else who replied in this thread) that you have a lower back problem? Go see a doctor, a physiotherapist or a chiropractor. Asking for advice on something like that here, is like asking three blind men what the sunrise looks like...

I did already. He said do you exercise and I told him what I do. I said I used to do weights but not anymore and I just do bodyweight exercises and running everyday. He said that I'm executing the exercises wrong and to work on my form. I told him it's not that since I know my pushups, squats, and chinup form is perfect. He didn't give me a prescription to get an MRI anyways.
I'm going to probably make another appointment soon with another doctor hopefully.
I made this thread to see what exercises I could do for the lower back.
In that case get someone to watch you when you do your exercises(someone who knows what their doing) because you make think your doing proper form but you might not be. Squats being the main thing of causing your lower back pain

I really doubt it's that but I'll still get it checked.
yrrej 06-18-2006, 10:22 PM Lay flat on your back with your knees up and just reach to the ceiling, lifting your upper body off the ground. This will work your abs. You can also do pulldowns on the cable with your arms straight out in front of you and the back straight. This works the abs some also.

The first one you're talking about hurts my back and the pulldown thing I can't do because I don't have a pulley machine.
Zigga 06-18-2006, 10:44 PM Maybe dorsil raises might help, to strenghen ur lower back, but i wouldnt do any new exercises without consulting ur doc first as i understand u have back problems
LoftyDog 06-19-2006, 12:36 AM Yeah, it sounds more like a lower back probalem than anything. I would definately see another doctor, it never hurts to get a second opinion.

Seems like that doctor didn't know what he was talking about. If you get lower back pain from hanging leg lifts, then something's gotta be wrong. There's no way to do that exercise wrong to the point where you get lower back pain.
Like you say, see another doctor!
It's not wise to get a bunch of back exercises from people here, who don't really know what's wrong with your back. Here's a bunch of lower back exercises, but if I were you, I'd be careful untill I knew a skilled physician had diagnosed my back properly.
PunchDrunk 06-19-2006, 05:45 AM hahahahahaha
That really wasn't meant to be funny.
ophqui 06-19-2006, 06:37 AM u could do cable crunches, then u dont have to be on the floor. or cable woodchoppers r a great exercise for core strenght, especially for boxers. Also try a swiss ball, not a medicine ball

Yeah, ture. Ok, so I'm gonna try to find a new chiropractor in the area so I can get a second look by someone else. And hopefully they'll let me get an MRI atleast.
