My BJJ intstructor has been telling me for the longest time that lifting weights can hurt my Jui Jitsu because it will make you gas.......nothing can be further from the truth. I have added weight training to my arsenal influenced by Matt Hughes training. Let me tell you I am able to escape submission attempts and dominate on the ground on brute strength alone from becoming stronger from weights. Weight training does help. My conclusion is this. Weight training + BJJ beats BJJ alone.

Strength training helps in any sport. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

You can only benefit from strength training.

This has been argued for along time in BJJ circles. My instructor leaves it up to the individual, he doesn't push you either way. He does warn though, that if you rely on strength too much, your technique will suffer. The OP said he dominates on brute strength alone now, that IMO is not good. I saw a 190-lb BJJ BB DOMINATE a 230-lb wrestler who was VERY strong for his size. He obviously did not use strength to do it.
