Why? Ilicanos ARE Filipinos. Why do some Ilocanos feel that they are not Filipinos?

View Full Version : In Hawaii, I asked if they were Filipino. They said "No. We are Ilocano!" SnoopySmurf 06-16-2006, 09:44 AM Why? Ilicanos ARE Filipinos. Dictator mentality! :D :D :D Chups 06-16-2006, 11:05 AM Why? Ilicanos ARE Filipinos. Why do some Ilocanos feel that they are not Filipinos? It could be that they are joking...or ignorant. You could have followed that up with....Ilocanos are Filipinos right? Or joked around by telling them you are Pampangueno. :D "O really?? I'm Pampangueno....if you had told me you were Filipinos I would have beaten you up....LOL" SnoopySmurf 06-16-2006, 11:12 AM It could be that they are joking...or ignorant. I'm Pampangueno....if you had told me you were Filipinos I would have beaten you up....LOL" No, they weren't joking. They would ask me if I'm Ilocano and I'd no, I'm Filipino and they just shake their head. My sister said that it's very common for Ilocanos in Hawaii to say this. It could be that they've had long hard and painful history here in Hawaii (slave wages to work in sugar cane fields) and then we "non-Ilocanos" just strolled in and had it easy. Why do some Ilocanos feel that they are not Filipinos? an explanation for their behavior can be rooted in the way that the philippines is geographically, since we are a country of islands we identify each other from being bisaya, ilokano etc instead of being one nation it has been a problem ever since the spanish era, the reason why the revolution didnt work well was because everyone was just out for themselves and no national revolution, kapampangans were fighting for pampanga, cavitenos for cavite and such, this phenomenon is known as regionalism and it certainly is not good for our country if we really want to be better, we must strip ourselves with regionalism and instead of classifying each other by being ilokano bisaya etc we should be all proud to be filipino whew! xzworks 06-17-2006, 02:19 AM an explanation for their behavior can be rooted in the way that the philippines is geographically, since we are a country of islands we identify each other from being bisaya, ilokano etc instead of being one nation it has been a problem ever since the spanish era, the reason why the revolution didnt work well was because everyone was just out for themselves and no national revolution, kapampangans were fighting for pampanga, cavitenos for cavite and such, this phenomenon is known as regionalism and it certainly is not good for our country if we really want to be better, we must strip ourselves with regionalism and instead of classifying each other by being ilokano bisaya etc we should be all proud to be filipino whew! tama..ako'y taas noong TAGALOG..lol.. :D += El Jefe=+ 06-17-2006, 02:23 AM ok let me get this straight Philipino (pinoy) = someone fromt the philipine islands Hawai is part of the Hawaian Islands, so how the **** are hawaians philipinos??? Papa Ace 06-17-2006, 03:40 AM Why? Ilicanos ARE Filipinos. Why do some Ilocanos feel that they are not Filipinos? the philippines is composed of many regions each having his own unique distinction. ilocanos is just under one of those regional classification. ilocanos were the very first regional minority to immigrate in hawaii. and now they form part (if not the biggest) of the population of hawaii. the history of filipinos living in hawaii started during a mass immigration of ilocano natives in hawaii. ironically, 2006 (this year) marks the 100th year (centennial celebration) of that immigration phenomenon. read on: http://www.filipinosinhawaii100.org/chronology.asp edmendoza101 06-17-2006, 03:42 AM No, they weren't joking. I remember in my high school days, we been invited by a girlfriend from Batangas (Fiesta).During the course of the "happenings" when we're a bit groggy na,a group of burly guys with guns in their waist came and drank with us (invited cops from Manila )One guy stand up and asked" who among you guys are Ilocano?" he thought of asking the question coz he knew just like them we're also guest from Manila.A friend of mine whose parents are Ilocano but was born and raised in Manila quickly said "Me sir". Quickly the guy asked him if he can speak ilocano. Friend of mine said" No sir I was born and raised in Manila. The guy arrogantly told him " begin talking ilocano kid, you're in Ilocano Country". But what i notice among asians, latinos, and whites, if they lived in Hawaii, u ask them what nationality/race they are, they say their Hawaiians. Alibata 06-21-2006, 07:00 PM Ilocanos are a proud of their heritage. But what i notice among asians, latinos, and whites, if they lived in Hawaii, u ask them what nationality/race they are, they say their Hawaiians. First, Hawaiian is not a nationality, Hawaii is an American state. I am from Los Angeles, hence, an Angelino. Polynesian is the native race of people of the Hawiian Islands. However, non-polynesian people have been living in Hawaii for a very, very long time and have probably never been anywhere else but Hawaii. I think that makes them Hawaiian. Off the subject, I read somewhere that Polynesians are decended from Filipinos or Malays which account for the many linguistic similarities in language. One of which, Tae' the word for **** is the same in both tagalog and polynesian. There are many words that are similar or the same. All in all Pinoys are proud and those who are not, **** em. xzworks 06-21-2006, 11:58 PM sakopin na natin ang hawaii. sugod mga kapatid! SnoopySmurf 06-22-2006, 12:47 PM My sister who lives in Oahu said that some Ilocanos don't want to be called Filipino. I'd understand if they ~lived in~ the Philippines. But they're in Hawaii. When a Filipino asks if they're Filipino, they sometimes say "No, I am Ilocano!" That's the point I'm trying to make. If an American asks a white guy in Manila if he's American, I doubt he would say "I'm not American, I'm a Marylander!" :) flipside 06-24-2006, 09:49 PM My sister who lives in Oahu said that some Ilocanos don't want to be called Filipino.
