Malachy Friedman will be on the undercard of Cage Fury on June 30th in Atlantic City, his opponent will be Brian Vanes. UFC vetern Evan Tanner will be in his corner for the fight. MMA365 has also learned that a win in this fight could earn Friedman a lightweight title shot in Cage Fury's next event.
mma365: What is your gameplan coming into the fight when you learned about your opponent, has your training changed?
Malachy Friedman: I don't know much about him, so no.
mma365: Are you under contract with Cage Fury?
Malachy Friedman: Yes, I'm under contract with Cage Fury.
mma365: For several fights right? And, how are you feeling pre-fight, mentally and physically?
Malachy Friedman: Physically, I've never trained myself this hard, I'm training everyday, I was pushing it past the limit everday. I'm lifting, I'm sparring, and I'm grappling. Mentally, I have already beaten him.
mma365: And which camp are you fighting out of?
Malachy Friedman: Originally, out of bearclan, but I'm pretty much out of Tanners camp, Evan Tanner.
mma365: So he is going to be in your corner for the fight?Malachy Friedman: Yes, he will be in my corner.
mma365: Have you been training with him?
Malachy Friedman: He's been with me for my mental preperations, he's been doing something for the childrens hospital. He has been like a big brother to me.
mma365: Are you looking to get on the Ultimate Fighter of UFC?
Malachy Friedman: I'm trying to get a shot for season five, I'm hoping to beat these kids, and then turn it around and get on the show.
mma365: Can you tell a little bit about yourself, how did you start training?
Malachy Friedman: I was pretty much, into alot of street fights, and I believed that since a young age, I wanted to be the ultimate fighter, but I was into selling drugs, violence, being the most violent person I could be. At twenty years old I didn't know where I was at, I was in jail alot, coming in and out, and I finally made a decesion, and analyzed why I was doing this, and I made the decesion that this is something that I really wanted to do; Jiu-Jitsu. So I flew out 3500 miles away from my family and friends, to get away from all the stuff I was doing, and just dedicated my life to training. I devouted my life, this is what I'm here to do.
mma365: So your intially a street fighter, have you worked on your ground game?
Malachy Friedman: Oh yea, I came from street fighting, and my friends were tapping me out, and I knew I have to learn this stuff, he was chocking me out while I was out in the yard, and I dedicated my life to Brizilian Jiu Jitsu, to striking, to learning the takedowns, learning the ground games, learning everything. I've done nothing but learn the skills of mma, because its truly a skilled fight. Its nothing like I've done in my life, the training is so intense. Everyday I come home and collapse, and you know there is always more learning. I feel like I'm like a caterpillar, just like that little shell, not sure what they call it. I'm still at the beggining stages.
mma365: Any predictions for June 30th?
Malachy Friedman: I think I'm going to do it the way I want it to go, I'll take whatever he gives me, and I'll take it hard. He says he wants to knock me out, I doubt that he has the power to knock me out. If he wants to take it to the ground and submit me, there is no possible way. He has a punchers chance, thats all hes got. He definetly has one punch that he can throw, and if he lands and it knocks me out, congratulations, and if it doesn't, he's in for the worst night of his life.
mma365: So would taking it to the ground be the best thing to do in this fight?
Malachy Friedman: I don't care, I'm stronger than him in all possibilities. I'm nicknamed "Brick Wall", there is a reason why I'm nicknamed "Brick Wall". People who I have sparred with like Nick Tanner...good luck, your not going to knock me out, your not going to submit me. Things are going to go my way, I'm going to stop him quickly, get my check & go out and have a drink.
mma365: Who was your boxing or mixed martial arts idol while you were growing up?
Malachy Friedman: You know its changed so much. My idol, started off with, Chuck Liddel, when he beat Victor Belfort, I really wanted to be like him, but its changed so much, to where I love the ground game so much, I love the Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighters, the submission artists, I love the submission aspect of the game. Randy Coutoure, Wanderlai Silva, and Shogun; their style and aggresivness. I can't say that there is one person I look up to. I look up to anyone who forces their will on the opponent, and they see their opponent crumble.
