Matt McCabe (1-0), who will be fighting for the Bantaweight title on June 30th for Cage Fury, answered some general and specific questions about his upcoming fight with Nick Cottone (3-0).
mma365: Once you learned about the opponent you would be facing, did this effect your training and gameplan?
Matt McCabe: Yeah it did change it quite a bit, I usually plan on standing but because I heard he's a phenomenal wrestler, with respect to him, I'm working on the ground of my back, sprawls, quite a bit, and submissions from my back. I always do but I'm working on them about twice as much as I usually do before a fight.
mma365: Are you under contract with Cage Fury for a long term relationship, or is this a one fight deal?
Matt McCabe: This is just one fight for now, I'll see how it goes.
mma365: If you win the championship are you looking for a long term contract?
Matt McCabe: I'll be looking to defend it, depending on how everything goes.
mma365: How are you feeling pre-fight, mentally and physically?
Matt McCabe: I feel great man, I go into every fight expecting to win, I believe in my abilities. I have a good team, good people around me. Jorge, good manager, and some really good trainers.
mma365: For the people that are not familiar with your personal backround, can you tell us a little bit about yourself, how did you start training?
Matt McCabe: Yeah, I did grappling, since I was nine or ten. I wrestled through middle school, high school. I got into jiu-jitsu through a buddy of mine. I came down to school one and started learning jiu-jitsu, I loved it, its addicting. About 5-6 months after that, I started fighting, learning mui thai, kickboxing, and just loved it, seemed to be pretty good.
mma365: What do you expect for June 30th, any predictons?
Matt McCabe: I predict, a first round submission.
mma365: First round submission? And, what are your thoughts about your opponent? Nick Cottone, he's undefeated, I believe he is 3-0.
Matt McCabe: Yeah, I saw a couple of his fights, he's done a real nice job, he always tries to break peoples guard on the ground. He doesn't like to stand that often, he throws one or two jabs and tries to shoot. I just feel, I will be able to utilize my jiu-jitsu to the fullest, just to make him quit, pretty much.
mma365: And, which team are you training with?
Matt McCabe: I train with Team Jorge Gurgel.
mma365: One final question, who was your boxing or mixed martial arts idol?
Matt McCabe: Oh man, there is a few of them. Wanderlai Silva, fights for Pride. Rich Franklin, who is part of our team with Jorge Gurgel, his mentor, his fighting style is just ridicolous, he does cardio everyday. I'd say Wanderlai Silva & Rich Franklin.
mma365: Yeah, we've seen his workout, its insane, he worked out straight for over an hour with no water or break.
Matt McCabe: Yeah he is just phenomenal.
mma365: Thank you for taking your time for the interview, and good luck on June 30th.
