Instead of my polluting Butterfly's tournament thread anymore, or any other thread, I figured I'd just put some of these fights in their very own thread (discussions on them are encouraged, as well).

Start this one with the great Ron Lyle/Earnie Shavers slugfest from the mid 70's;

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=C65B448C0AB435D1

Watch for the left hook from hell at the end of the second round by Shavers, and be suprised how Lyle even managed to pick himself up from that shot, nevermind the heart he showed in going on to actually win the fight...

Enjoy! :boxing:

P.S. If this link or any other one runs out before you have the opportunity to download it (it is yousendit, afterall), just say the word and I'll reupload the fight for you...unless your name is either Butterfly or Yaman, of course.

Here's a fight from 1930 between two large and mostly underrated(in my opinion) heavyweights, Primo Carnera & George Godfrey;

What a great fight and a vivid reminder of the depth of the heavyweight division in the 70's. Great toe to toe non-stop in-fighting action. Lyle was a strong, tough, hard hitting SOB with a ton of heart who just plain outlasted Shavers. Amazing to see Lyle all but KO'd in the 2nd round continue to stand and trade in close with Shavers. Great uppercuts from Lyle fighting off the ropes and great power right hands for the KO.

Early in this fight Shavers demonstrated a tight compact style, dipped well at the waist, had two handed power, was a busy infighter, mixed his attack and possessed decent handspeed. He was a better fighter technically than he is given credit for, often being portrayed as a crude one handed fighter which as this fight clearly shows he was not. His problem was always stamina.

The Fight of the Century.

The first one to be given that title was the infamous fight in Sabbath's signature up there...Johnson vs. Jeffries. The second one was fought on March 8th, 1971, and featured a classic contest between a couple of undefeated heavyweights who both had some claim to the title of heavyweight champion of the world;

You know, Sabbath, I just watched part of that Lyle/Shavers fight again and when I got to that Shavers' left hook at the end of the second round I had to sit there & play it back about four or five times. How the hell Lyle even got up from that punch I'll never know, and if you ask me, with the way Lyle looked so out of it down there, I'd say him getting up to win is even a bit more impressive than when Holmes did the same against Shavers.

Anyways, seeing as how there is so many fans of the heavyweights from that era on here, I'm going to continue on with another excellant, but shorter little slugfest that Frazier took part in (as soon as it's finished uploadeding). I'll also upload that Holmes/Shavers fight before too long, as well, and you guys can make the comparision of what I spoke of there.

Yeah, Lyle may very well have not survived had it happened a bit earlier in the round, even if Shavers even had only one short opportunity to finsh the fight in the closing seconds before the round ended. But that's a "what if" type of scenario and we can't change the specifics of it to find out the answer to that question, so...

Great ****ing fight, though, and it's probably best that that "what if" question never was answered.

It's not like a still fresh Shavers didn't have the opportunity to duplicate it so full credit to Lyle who fought toe to toe with his back to the ropes and didn't clinch much.

We all saw what happened to Norton when he tried fighting off the ropes with Shavers...

Just recieved a PM reminding me of the lightweight division during the 80's, so in response I uploaded a good scrap from that time/division between Alexis Arguello & Andy Ganigan I loved this fight when it happened. Alexis Arguello the body punching technician. Watch the right uppercut to the solar plexus that does Ganigan in. That's why he wasn't even attempting to get up. Great ramrod left jab and accurate straight rights as well. A well schooled technical fighter. Kudos to Eddie Futch.

Cornelias Boza Edwards allegedly soiled his trunks so intense was Arguello's body attack in their 1980 fight.

I seem to remember Rueben Castillo also getting stopped by Arguello with body punches, just off the top of my head...hope my memory hasn't failed me.

Alex was a big favourite of mine back in the day, and you are definately correct in calling him a "body punching technician"...One of the very best body punchers I've ever seen avtually, and from memory there was a whole bunch of truth to that story about Boza pooping himself against Arguello. It's been a while since I've seen the fight, but I do still have a faded memory of Boza having a fair sized brown stain on the back of his trunks, which was easily seen as he was wearing light (either white, or a slightly off-white) coloured trunks.

Oh and by the way, if any of you guys are into reading boxing bios I'd highly recommend Durelle's bio called 'The Fighting Fisherman'. Lots of boxing talk in there with some good descriptions of his fights & travels...The rough & gruff Durelle comes across as quite the character in the book (lots of swearing and such), as well, but he still has a mostly "everyday man" side to him which is easy to relate to.

I thought that I did have Liston's rematch with with Williams on here, but apparently that was one of the fights I lost back when my computer took a dump a few months back...Either that or I need to get my friggin eyes checked.

And isn't that Westphal fight on google video or youtube or something, because I thought I saw it on one of them sites similiar to those?

Anyways, I got Liston's fight with Leotis Martin uploading at the moment, which I "think" is the only other fight of his that I have on here...I'm also going to go on a streak of adding heavyweight fights, and that might take quite a while because I still have quite a few of them on here.

Yeah, that knockout was pretty nasty, and it certainly ****ed Liston up some since he stayed on the canvas for so long. But he wasn't doing all that bad until the time of the KO, though, and as you saw (and others will see) Martin wasn't without his share of talent himself...

A big file though, so it's going to take some time to upload (it says it'll take nearly an hour and a half).

Another one of my favourites. A concentrated in-fighting body attack brings Quarry to his knees. Check out Quarry eyeballing Louis to step in and save him and Louis just lets Frazier beat on him. Pink trunks for Joe and the classic 70's striped referee shirt on Loius....

After watching Tyson vs. Holyfield II again, I just can't see the reason for that bite; other than Mike being crazy of course. He was winning the 3rd round. He came out bobbing, weaving, and throwing combinations, which are three things he didn't do in the first fight. After an accidental headbutt, which happened in fight one, round 6, when Tyson again was doing well, he just loses it. Such a shame...he had Holyfield in trouble early and he throws it away.

I also love the Ron Lyle vs. Earnie Shavers slugfest. I had forgotten how great Ali vs. Frazier I was as well. Maybe I'm nuts, but I had Ali winning on rounds...

Karma is that little blue bar next your name- it really doesn't do anything but if its blue other posters Know your not an *******, or atleast your nicer more often then you are an *******. If its red then that usually means that poster is an ******* or flames people often. These are sometimes inaccurate.

Points- you get them everytime you post-like interest in a bank. Or if your a extremely nice to a poster, you do jobs for people, or win on a bet in the betting section you get points. Points are good for if you want to donate to another poster because they were nice, or you agree with them and you can't give out Karma. Also Points can be used to buy stuff in the store (change user title add color or glowing effects to you name etc) or if you want to risk your points and bet on something in the betting section. You can also put your points in the bank to get interst or so other posters can't see how much you have.

Some notes on a few of these fights...

Poor, poor Max Baer. Joe Louis looked absolutely stellar.

I can't believe a guy built like Cooney was as successful as he was; but I guess that kind of power can flat out win in a pinch.

I still think Ali outscored Joe Frazier in fight one. While Joe "worked" harder, Ali really, really messed him up.

If the Tyson who showed up for the Ruddock fights hadn't gone to prison, he would have been phenomenal. Heart, stamina, body assaults, wow!

Again, this should have been made a sticky.

I agree, especially the announcer reminded us that scoring is by the round. However, it was very close regardless of how you look at the fight.

Thanks again, Yogi, for the fight.

This is a great fight that goes back and forth. Shogun is my favorite current MMA fighter the guy is all action and in my opnion would destroy anyone in the world outside of the Heavyweight division including Chuck and Silva.

Yep, Buddy caught him with a monster of a left hook that snapped Louis' head sideways, and sent him ass over end through the ropes...But suprisingly enough, Louis seemed perfectly fine within a second after going out of the ring.
The ring used in that fight was a wrestling ring and if you look at the apron it was huge allowing the wrestlers room to to stand and fight on it. It also allowed Louis to get knocked onto it, pick himself up and get back in with room to spare. A standard apron would have seen Louis knocked into the press row.

The ring also had only 3 strands instead of 4 and were not tied together in the middle like today. Louis got knocked between the top and middle strands because his shoulders slipped through. In a modern 4 strand ring he likely would have stayed in the ring and been hit again by Baer ....

This is a pretty sound observation. While it's speculation, and Louis's jaw is probably less suspect than some originally though, it's still raises some questions.
