View Full Version : What are your top three complete, well-rounded fighters of all time Slipx 02-07-2005, 03:59 PM 1. larry holmes 2. hopkins 3. chavez Super_Lightweight 02-07-2005, 04:05 PM This is based on what I've seen, but also what I've heard from other people. 1) Sugar Ray Robinson 2) Bernard Hopkins 3) Mike McCallum Warrior Spirit 02-07-2005, 04:10 PM Sugar Ray Robinson Larry Holmes B-Hop Slipx 02-07-2005, 04:12 PM i threw chavez in because he has many different modes, he can stalk/slug or box very well, or just adapt to you and counter. he slugs better than he boxes though, imo. plus his skull is 1/3rd thicker than the avg man so that made him a contender for me ;-) jack_the_rippuh 02-07-2005, 04:13 PM 1. Whitaker 2. Hagler 3. Mayweather Jr. Slipx 02-07-2005, 04:16 PM i think in 5 years or so mayweather would be worthy of that #3, but not yet. he is definately shaping up to be a great fighter though. and yeah hagler was a great but not really a complete fighter, well I guess he was. Chavez is pretty much like hagler, they can box but prefer to goto war jack_the_rippuh 02-07-2005, 04:20 PM i think in 5 years or so mayweather would be worthy of that #3, but not yet. he is definately shaping up to be a great fighter though. and yeah hagler was a great but not really a complete fighter, well I guess he was. Chavez is pretty much like hagler, they can box but prefer to goto war Do you think Gatti can develop into them, since, he too can box (or jab) but prefers to go to war...even though his chin is no where as near as good as prime hagler and prime chavez's.. I listed Mayweather Jr. in terms of ability, not accomplishments, but I suppose you're right..I'd like to see how good he can be in old age, when some of that speed isn't there. That's what makes a fighter great when he can change his style to accomodate the physical changes what his body goes through with age.. Slipx 02-07-2005, 04:24 PM nope gatti started learning to be a complete fighter just recently, and he was past age 30 when he started learning this, so I doubt he'll make it. Floyd is young, and is already a complete fighter. and I dont see him getting upset this year, he has too good vision/boxing skills/reflexes to get beat. however look at holmes, his career took off when he was around 30, so I can't ever count out an old warrior marvelous_TG 02-07-2005, 04:53 PM suger ray robinson suger ray leonard and suger shane mosley at lightweight mike tyson in his prime had it all speed, power, combinations, chin, etc marvin hagler Boxhead2012 02-07-2005, 05:09 PM 1. Power and skill I say Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong, Thomas Hearns(not counting his chin)and Michael Spinks at Lightheavy..........Rockin' by saying complete I mean well rounded in offense, defense, chin, stamina, footwork, reflexes, and handspeed. edited- yes ,hearns, one of my top five favorites. if he would've had a chin and like a good left hook I think he could've been undefeated, but the right hand was enough to make him rich at least. oldgringo 02-07-2005, 11:22 PM Ali was very close to being a complete fighter. MArvin Hagler was pretty close to being a complete fighter early in his career. Of course Ray Robinson. Tha Greatest 02-07-2005, 11:43 PM THE THREE DETROIT BOXERS!!! 1. JOE LOUIS! 2. If RJJ was such a class act he would never have ducked Steve Collins, Collins was the best Super Middleweight at the time and RJJ new he couldn't beat him. Remember when collins got in the ring after one of RJJ fights and called him out and he just avoided him. RJJ lost all my respect after this, it was the fight every boxing fan wanted to see and it didn't happen because of one person RJJ, you cant blame the brit this time for ducking a big fight. marvdave 02-08-2005, 08:18 AM Robinson Armstrong Hagler Holmes Duran Jack Johnson Slipx 02-08-2005, 09:06 AM Holmes JCC Hagler/Duran Good list, someone knows what I'm talkin about ;-) Kornhusker 02-08-2005, 09:07 AM Robinson The Greatest Hopkins, The man can adjust to any style he faces, except Jones Jones Jr. He schooled Hopkins and Toney += El Jefe=+ 02-08-2005, 09:09 AM I see everyone's lists and they all have great fighters But Come on Why isnt Ali in it??? Slipx 02-08-2005, 09:19 AM I see everyone's lists and they all have great fighters But Come on Why isnt Ali in it??? there are simply way better complete fighters. ali was good but he was not great, and is overrated, along with marciano.. people just say he was the greatest because of the fact that he beat a prime george foreman, his personality and his ego, his moves inside the ring, and finally, his self-appointed nickname,'the greatest'. roy jones jr is more of a complete fighter than ali was dino 02-08-2005, 09:58 AM 1.tommy the hitman hearns 2.roy jones 3.mike (bob) foster dempseyfire 02-08-2005, 10:15 AM Ali did not have a big punch and his defensive fundamentals were very lacking. Very talented guy but it makes little sense to include him in a well rounded fighter discussion, b-c he simply wasnŽt. Hagler, Robinson and Hopkins are great picks. IŽd add Aaron Pryor, Micky Walker, and Joe Louis as well. Mr. Ryan 02-08-2005, 10:57 AM Ray Robinson is the most complete fighter of all time, he could do anything. It didn't seem like it sometimes, but Ruben Olivares could do everything in the ring. Tommy Hearns was very versatile, just look at the first Leonard fight. The one thing he couldn't do was take a punch. speedracerxxx888 02-08-2005, 12:47 PM I think Pacman is one of them...two fisted fighter with speed and endurance...KO POWER!!! The key word there is IF. I sometimes lack the focus to stay in the gym. I'm sometimes lazy, but when I'm in the gym I'm really good. My trainer tells me my greatest asset is my love for the sport.
