I can't wait to get in there and mix it up. I'm not too sure what to expect, most people said they got the shit beat of them in their first sparring session, but with me being so inexperienced (been boxing for a month to a month and a half, but coach thinks im ready) I doubt coach would throw me to the wolves like that.

Any advice i can take in there with me? I'm 6'1" 146 lbs as of right now, so more than likely i'll be fighting a short guy. :boxing: work that jab baby.

Yeah kid, use your reach and use your jab. If you want to "mix-it up" with a more experienced fighter than you will come out on the short end 9/10 times.

They have obviously shown you how to catch a jab, well catch his and work yours stepping around in rythme. If he comes for you then fight him off of you, I just dont recommend you going for only a street fight type of lesson, especially when your so young.

oh when i said "mix it up" i didnt mean have a Philly Gym War, I just meant im anxious to go against an actual live opponent instead of punch mitts and heavy bags. and LOL im not that young, I'm 23. I wish I would have started about 10 years earlier than I did, but thats another story

Learn to use your legs and your jab with your height to begin.

The jab could be your bread and butter.

Just PACE yourself and stay as relaxed as possible. (i know it's hard, especially your first time out)

Try to catch a rhythem and go from there.

just got back from the gym, had some mixed results. They put me in with (you guessed it) a shorter guy, but he was bigger, about 152 lbs, said he'd been boxing for 5 years. getting in the ring, everything I learned basically went out the window. I had trouble finding my range with the jab when trying to initiate the action. my hand speed isnt as fast as I thought so i couldn't just pick him off, and my coaches were saying "you're just letting him get inside, work that jab some more. On the positive side, I timed him with several straight right hands as he tried to throw a hook, and bloodied his nose up severly, almost covering the entire front of his shirt. not tooting my own horn, because shit, the dude is basically a bleeder, his nose bleeds almost everytime he spars, but it still gave me a slight boost in confidence showing that my punches were finding there mark. I actually turned southpaw for a slight moment and was able to catch him with a coupel combos and even a lead right hook. My contacts were a non-issue, I didnt even think about them, and I ate his shots well. going in one of the things i was worried about most was how i would take a body shot, and he hit me with a couple that hurt, but surprisingly didnt affect me.

back to the bad, my ****ing right thigh tightened up on me so bad towards the end of the first round, that hindered my movements, and in the 2nd round it got even worse, to the point where midway through the round I could barely move and i ended up pressed against the ropes trading with him.

All in all, I'd say it was a positive experience for me. I got to actually put some work in inside the ring with another fighter, took some lumps, and really discovered what I need to work on. I learned alot and I didnt get hurt so i cant complain. I cant wait to do it again

Congratulations man, but we cant christen you yet. He who bleeds in the ring with me is my brother, you have not bled yet. But its good, you stepped up and gave it a shot. Your hand speed will increase once you learn to just let it go rather then load a punch with everything that you have. Its all about learning to relax, even when under fire, keeping your eyes transfixed with the future playing through in your mind you will deliver the shots.
