View Full Version : Mayorga announces retirement
twospeed99 10-04-2004, 08:45 PM Hope he's still just a little dizzy:
Mayorga: I'm retired!
The always unpredictable Ricardo Mayorga has taken a page out of Tito Trinidad's book by retiring according a press report from Nicaragua. "I am not going to continue fighting," Mayorga told La Prensa. "I'm retired....I'm simply not continuing and have no need to continue. I have sufficient resources....The sacrifice is a lot and I have been fighting since I was 11 years old. So at 31 years of age, I seek peace." The pick here is that Mayorga's retirement is shorter in duration that Tito's.
SalvaDominicano 10-04-2004, 08:48 PM this **** sucks... ****. i hope your joking.

borikua 10-04-2004, 08:58 PM This ain't bull****...This is from a local Nicaraguan newspaper (it's in spanish):
El peleador Ricardo Mayorga anuncia su retiro después de su derrota ante el puertorriqueño Félix “Tito” Trinidad
“No voy a seguir peleando. Me retiro. Lo he pensado y discutido con mi
familia.
“Simplemente no quiero seguir y no necesitó seguir. Tengo suficientes

I don't doubt that he said it, but he will fight again..probably sooner than later. A guy like him will need all the money he can get. Needs to pay lawyers,etc...
The Fix 10-04-2004, 09:07 PM i wouldnt doubt he stays retired. he has plenty of money and has said he was close to retiring before. he sure did go out in style his last fight.... that hit me in the chin gesture was too good :D
ELPacman 10-04-2004, 09:12 PM How could he be fighting since he was 11 to 31 when he has less fight wins+knock outs+losses, to equal even Marco Antonio's amount of wins he's had in 15 years?
DR. FREECLOUD 10-04-2004, 09:43 PM How could he be fighting since he was 11 to 31 when he has less fight wins+knock outs+losses, to equal even Marco Antonio's amount of wins he's had in 15 years?
he is talking about his entire career as a boxer. meaning amatures and all. the record you see is only his professional record
The Noose 10-04-2004, 09:58 PM Hi s ego tool a pounding, its kinda predictable he talks about retirement. BUT the very fact that hes been fighting since he was 11 makes it all the tougher to walk away.
Tha Greatest 10-04-2004, 10:10 PM What Rite When I Started To Like Him!!
twospeed99 10-04-2004, 10:17 PM Might rethink when he see's how much his fan base just grew, fan base is drawing power, drawing power is more $$$$$ no matter what America's you live in,
grayfist 10-04-2004, 10:37 PM If he doesn't get lured back by the money (fat chance of that happening!), he'll be back for the adoration. A character like Ricardo begs, craves for all the attention he can get! He's just having the funk of the magnitutde that only machomen can have after a loss. Or, if he's more clever than anyone gives him credit for, he could just merely be upping the ante for his next fight!?!
neils7147933 10-04-2004, 11:06 PM This isn't out of the blue!
A few months ago he said he wanted a couple more fights, then he was done. Apparently he doesn't want another. I wouldn't bet against him coming back, but with his rape case going on right now, it's not time to think about his next fight.

The sharp analyst that you are bro ;), i believe on this one.
Mayorga is far from done. He can still come back and fight Fernando Vargas (now that's gonna be one entertaining slugfest again!) or Oumma. Winky and Shane are big paydays for him, people will want to watch these too.

m00ks 10-04-2004, 11:49 PM He'll come back to **** up Varags once this one gets comfortable.
grayfist 10-04-2004, 11:58 PM Nicaragua is a country in thirst of heroes; it's last one was the great Alexis Arguello, long retired. Mayorga has come on the scene. If one goes by what have been and continue to be reported in media, he's the one of biggest exports that country has, both legal and illegal. The wheels of justice have been known to be greased (by money, influence, public opinion, color perception, national pride, personal biases of jurists, etc.) in both/either direction/s, in every part of the world; Nicaragua cannot be better. The loss to Tito, I guess, has more impact on the psyche of the character that Mayorga is than the rape case he's facing. He has said that the case doesn't bother him.
Be that as it may, I think, he'll emerge from both woes, slightly scathed, but raring to pick up where he's left off in his career.
Save for Rocky Marciano, I couldn't remember any fighter who was at the peak of his popularity who stayed retired. If there was/were, I'm sure their number is pretty low. Even in the case of Rocky, it can be argued that had he not died soon after retirement in a plane crash, he would have staged a come-back. But that's in the realm of pure speculation. And so is this exercise we're having with regard Ricardo. Time will tell. But my guess is, he's not done with the ring yet. And that guess can be just as good as any's! :D
grayfist 10-05-2004, 12:01 AM He'll come back to **** up Varags once this one gets comfortable.Hello pal! :) Vargas-Mayorga: that's something to see! :D
Cleary23 10-05-2004, 12:03 AM What the hell happenend to all his tough talk?? He said he was going to put tito back in retirement and now hes going into retirement.
Hes a ****in loser ne ways
.::|ULTIMATE|::. 10-05-2004, 12:05 AM thats good the man is done, and very limited.
vB Martin 10-05-2004, 04:32 AM Mayorga s a compelling draw in fights, but he certainly doesn't need the money. As piss poor as the economy is in Nicaragua, even with Bush having driven the dollar to 30 year lows, Mayorga has Bill Gates kinda money in his native land. What's the need to come back and fight again, except, perhaps, to not end his career on a loss?
Marjoh 10-05-2004, 05:32 AM Yeah, I guess it's Trinidad all over again. He retired after he got TKO by Hopkins (well actually he fought one more time after that, but it's close). So this may be the same case for Mayorga.
Dark Destroyer 10-05-2004, 06:47 AM Mayorga was beaten properly for the first time in his career as a world class professional. I only half believe him when he says he is going to retire purely because he said after the fight that he had a bruised heart. Each fighter has there own ways of dealing with defeat and Mayorga is such a proud man that i cannot 100% see him walking away with a defeat as his last fight on his record. He is the kind of fighter who will want to end his career on a victory. Although if he does retire then i respect that completely as not enough fighters get out while they have there health intact.
mayorga is one of the most exciting boxers in our time. if he decides to retire i respect it
bigsmoothh 10-05-2004, 10:41 AM my respect for mayorga grew round by round as the fight went on, hes got heart and a good chin.if he does retire i respect that.
Explosivo 10-05-2004, 10:59 AM He always acted like a jerk before fights, but it was good for theatrics I guess. I didnt really like him before the fight but I did gain a lot of respect for him during the fight just for the way he was able to continue to fight and throw viscious bombs after taking that kind of punishment from Trinidad. I think that his ego is just bruised and he'll be back for at least 1 more fight. I think he'll fight Mosley after he looses to Winky again.
Hurlex 10-05-2004, 01:20 PM hit it right on the head(i will come back to this)
...mayorga is kinda of a idiot just when they saw him...so many ppl became fans..he pulls this crap..dammit he was gona get good fights.
anyway what i ment is he has said he would only come back for a lot of money or..or vargas..they dont like each other and said he's always wanted to fight vargas..cuz he think cargas has heart and his hard-hitting just like him...
i say vargas take this as his 2nd or 3rd comeback fight and get f**ked the hell up
Marcus_Stunner 10-05-2004, 01:28 PM remember "i'll retire tito"? haha. now look who's retiring. but still, the man is one of the most exciting fighters around. and i hope he will not retire for good.... not yet.
PacKillsMorales 10-05-2004, 04:57 PM What the hell happenend to all his tough talk?? He said he was going to put tito back in retirement and now hes going into retirement.

HAHA THE POINT I WAS GOING TO MAKE...
it will annoy him too much if he lets tito retire him.
so hell be back no doubt..
it just wont be a rematch with felix "tito" trinidad :D
and i doubt hell ever show his chin like he did at the wknd
bert988 10-05-2004, 05:52 PM i think he will be back in about a year,he is a great entertainer and i really think he can be a force in 154 or 147 if he can still make the welterweight limit..
