View Full Version : Is it the lack of power, or the level of opposition?
ELPacman 04-28-2006, 07:18 PM I was thinking of something watching Hatton and Manny fight, and ya know, people talk how they both have tremendous power and whatnot. Yet, neither of them as of late really had 1 punch devastating power. They both seem to beat down their opponents until they finally go out. Their KO % is not scary high, though lets you know they have power in some way. What other fighters out there have a high KO % yet beat down their opponents more than simply 1 shot and they are lights out? Could it also be the quality of opposition that they can't really go ahead and KO the best with 1 shot?
enadeus 04-28-2006, 07:50 PM I don't think Hatton has tremendous power, but Pacquioa does. However you are right, its not one punch KO power, but he breaks down the opponent. He has improved greatly in his skill lever since the JMM fight, so he doesn't need to rely on just one shot and tire down. Hatton, never was really a very powerful guy, just used constant pressure.

Many fighters haven`t had one shot power but have accomplished great KO records. Speed of punch, accuracy, technique and a fighter's pace has a allot to do with KO's, not just the power of one particular shot!
{BrownBomber} 04-28-2006, 08:00 PM I think they both have 1 punch ko power but it isnt as apearant with better oppositon because they have a better defense or a better chin. What Hatton does takes a lot of strength and what Pacquiao did in his last fight took a lot patience but they both have 1 punch ko power IMO.
Kid Achilles 04-28-2006, 08:00 PM Vitali Klitschko also has a very high KO% and yet lacks his younger brother's swift knockout punch.
Briman15 04-28-2006, 08:04 PM Most dominant boxers (Ali, Mayweather, Duran for example) don't get most knock outs with one punch. The key is to hit your opponent with solid shots again and again. No one enjoys being hit like that. Accumulation causes consistant knockouts.

Well once you get to a higher level guys will have better chins, be in better condition and have more pride than earlier fights. I'm not surprised Pac hasnt ran over some guys, its no knock on his power its just shows how prepared, prideful and skilled his opponents are JMM showed all this in even being able to come out of the 1st round let alone coming back and dominating the latter part of that fight. I also agree that Pac seems much more polished and 2 handed that he did in the JMM fight.
Hatton never had tremendous power but thats no knock on Hatton its just true. he is a volume puncher but then so are/were Barrera and Morales, JCC.
The Scientist 04-28-2006, 09:06 PM When Jones Jr. was in his unstoppable prime, he had devastating power (e.i. stopping Montel Griffin in the 1st round of their rematch)as well as schooling most of his opponents early, but stated that he often chose to take some of his oponnents the distance to gain fight experience. Could be that a fighter with theorized punch power, decides to break their opponent down gradualy for a possible K.O. later in the match; rather than waste their energy trying to go for the instant kill.
