View Full Version : Hopkins starting to fade and being real about it
Ive been the only one saying that he is fading but if you guys cant see it then theres something wrong with you. He wont KO Eastman and it might even be an upset. He wont KO any top fighter again. He only did it to Oscar because he belongs at 147. Im not criticizing him but it's the truth. I love X but he doesnt have many more left in him
The cool thing is that you guys might not know it be he does his ownself and I love him for being real about it. Did you hear his interview during the Gatti fight. X has never spoke like that before. He said that at 40 anybody can give him a hard time. I dont think he has been impressed with his last few fights and he knows he cant do the same things he used to. People thought he looked great against Joppy but I thought he looked like ****. Joppy was just washed up. The Hopkins that fought Keith Holmes and Tito wouldve KO Joppy and destroyed Oscar. Oscar was actually doing pretty good in that fight.
Im not criticizing him. He is just getting older like everyone has to and I hope he doesnt ruin his legacy. He should retire soon because I know whats going to happened if he doesnt. He will fight someone like Tito again and get KO and everyone will diminish what he accomplished like they did with Roy. Then he might even try to rematch him and get KO even worse and it will really destroy his legacy. Tito hasnt gotten better, X has just gotten older

Let me guess, are you Puerto Rican? :D
bonafuwa 02-03-2005, 01:54 AM He's getting old and he knows it. That's why he's already trying to secure a future for himself after boxing with Golden Boy. I definitely give Eastman a chance (a small one).
Let me guess, are you Puerto Rican? :D
No, Im not clown and I like Bernard more then Tito
paulmmv 02-03-2005, 02:24 AM i do agree that hopkins is not quite to same as he was a few years ago but be that as it may hopkins still has a lot of steam left in him and i still think he going to knock out eastman as for tito if hopkins fought him again i dont think that the results would be any different
oldgringo 02-03-2005, 03:22 AM I'd think that the older, more tired Hop would be very similar to the older, more tired Hagler. I think we'll see him use more brawling techniques as opposed to boxing and he will use his great chin to fall back on.

He's brawled his whole career except for the Tito and Oscar fights
xrhythmxnxbluesx 02-03-2005, 03:28 AM hopkins is a great fighter... best pound 4 pound... and hopefully if he wins or loses the eastman fight he will retire...
Atman 02-03-2005, 03:48 AM I couldn't disagree more, but we'll see.
julDilla 02-03-2005, 03:50 AM thats what hes making you guys believe, this is what hes known for....:D
I couldn't disagree more, but we'll see.
You disagree with what and what is you #4# list
Atman 02-03-2005, 04:06 AM I disagree that he's fading as much as you think he is. Obviously he's not as active as he used to be, but when he stops dominating his opponents, I'll concede that he's slipping significantly. Until then, I think he beats anyone from 168 down.
As far as P4P, I got Hopkins and Floyd at 1 & 2 and I really don't care enough to rank the others. PBF and Hops are the only ones fighting for the throne as of now.
deadlyvega 02-03-2005, 04:56 AM uh-oh the first excuse for hopkins when he losses to tito :p :D ,he won't retire he already said he will probably fight the winner of tito-winky if he gets passed(which i'm sure he will)Eastman,if he wins that then he said he'll be looking for one more big fight, but if he losses then he'll probably retire, either way i was right hopkins is never moving up :(
Keleneki 02-03-2005, 05:04 AM Nice post, DLT. I think you might be right about Hopkins starting to slip a little. Although I believe that he will still get past Eastman. I think that that his overall experience, use of footwork and angles will bring him victory in his next fight.
deuce_drop 02-03-2005, 08:05 AM i think that hopkins is setting a trap and that everyone who thinks he's fading is going to be surprised. hopkins is the master at making you think he's gonna do one thing and then come right back and do the opposite. he's know for leading people one way and seting lil traps. he's getting old , but he's stil cunning.....
jabsRstiff 02-03-2005, 08:22 AM DLT put this out there, so he can set up the argument that his boy Floyd deserves the #1 spot.
Kimmy 02-03-2005, 08:25 AM I give Eastman a better chance of beating Hopkins than Tito. I just get the impression that if Hopkins ever fought Tito, he`d beat him easy and win every round and avoid nearly all Tito`s big punches....wait a minute THAT DID HAPPEN!!
jabsRstiff 02-03-2005, 08:40 AM Trinidad is just a better fighter than Eastman, period.

I hope your right but i think he is going to push it too far. Fighting Tito again maybe the beginning of the end if Tito beats Winky.

As a Hopkins fan what fight do you think shows his full capabilities as a fighter?
Kornhusker 02-03-2005, 10:37 AM I won't be surprised if he retires after beating Eastman. There isn't anything left for him to accomplish that is worth tainting his legacy. In the record books 21 defenses wouldn't look that much better than 20. The only fight I can see him taking would be Wright, if he gets passed Tito, and that is a big if.
DiegoFuego 02-03-2005, 10:37 AM Hopkins will still beat his next 2-3 opponents unless Jermaine Taylor is the real deal

Don't you think he'll fight Tito again if Tito beats Winky? That fight would be worth alot of money.

No, I don't think he will. He is getting to the age and has enough on the line for the sake of history that money probably won't be as big a factor. I could be completely wrong, but nobody is going to accuse him of ducking a fighter he has previously dominated. Hopkins will be 64 years old before Taylor does something to even earn a title shot.

He doesn't have anything to prove but the fight fans would want it again just like most would like to see Taylor get a shot. I hope Bernard retires with his record and defenses intact.

YOu might think this is weird, but i like the RJJ
fight, B-Hop lost the decition:
Judge: Al DeVito 112-116 | Judge: Eugene Grant 112-116 | Judge: Lynn Carter 112-116.
but Hop showed what he was all about
and well al of his other fights wheren't even close,
and his other lost was his first Pro- Fight
so i take the loost against RJJ as his biggest fight.

Bernard did show good skills in the Roy fight even though he did lose back then. I wouldn't say it showed all his capabiltiees as a fighter though.

Hopkins acquitted himself very well in the Jones fight.
Jones was one step ahead of him the whole way.....but you could see how skilled & tough Hopkins was.
Roy was flattening & dominating opponents back then.....Hopkins did at least test him somewhat.
jack_the_rippuh 02-03-2005, 10:50 AM He's just trying to get people to believe that he's fading.

He did test him very well but if you were promoting Hopkins as a amazing fighter to someone who hadn't seen him would that be your choice? What about his other fights where he has shown superior qualities and won?
jabsRstiff 02-03-2005, 11:00 AM No, I wouldn't use that fight. He lost to a superior fighter that night.
I guess the Trinidad fight would be the best....as long as those you were trying to impress were patient enough to sit through the dissection.
Hopkins most spectacular performance was against Joe Lipsey.
He dominated him for 3 1/2 rounds & then knocked him cold with some awesome punches.

I haven't seen the Joe Lipsy fight but that sounds impressive. The Tito fight would be a good one to show although the person watching would have to understand how respectable Tito was at that point.

If they have followed any boxing over the last few years, they'd know how good Tito was.

True, it would be a sad boxing fan not to know how good Tito is and was. How do you think he'd cope against Bernard now?

But it didn't show his complete capabitlies as a fighter though that fight. Like Jabz said, the Tito fight showed his superior talent.
jabsRstiff 02-03-2005, 11:09 AM Better....but would still lose.
He'd box a little more, instead of just looking to bomb Hop out.
Hop is also not quite as sharp as he was then.
Tito will have more success, but Hopkins superior skill & size would see him putting it to Trinidad down the stretch.
Hopkins by unanimous decision.

A believable result as Hopkins is still a great fighter at his age. Who do you think would trouble Bernard more in Tito and Taylor?
Super_Lightweight 02-03-2005, 11:38 AM Roy's legacy is not tarnished badly, and neither will Hopkins' if he loses. He is 40 for Christ's sake, and all fighters get old. Great fighters are remembered for being great, not falling on their butts when they got old.
Peace.
oldgringo 02-03-2005, 11:40 AM A believable result as Hopkins is still a great fighter at his age. Who do you think would trouble Bernard more in Tito and Taylor?
I think if Taylor beats Eduoard decisively and then goes ahead and beats another nice middleweight...then he'd give Hop the most trouble. He has a lot of weapons and is physically bigger and stronger than is Tito. He'd be very dangerous for Hop.
By the way great avatar wez. Toney seems to be in good fashion there. :D :D
chingon28 02-03-2005, 11:48 AM hop is getting old but his skills have not deminished to the point where he would lose to tito. that was a pretty bad beating tito took.
DLT put this out there, so he can set up the argument that his boy Floyd deserves the #1 spot.
Come on now, you have to give me more respect then that. I already told you that I keep it real and say what I feel. I have X as the #4# king. I made this thread because I am a fan of his and I dont want his legacy tarnished. If he beats Eastman which I think he will but you never know, then he will fight Tito (if he wins) because there is just too much money in that fight and he probally believes that he can still beat him but I think he would get KO
IwatchBoxing 02-03-2005, 02:13 PM GL: After having reviewed your fight with Hopkins on tape, can you tell us some things you might do differently against him in a potential rematch?
FT: "I will answer that question simply..Yes, that fight will definitely be different because I'm going to win. I'm 100% sure of it!"

I agree that Taylor would probably be the toughest with more experience. Like you say he is bigger and naturally stronger.
Toney is a unbelievable fighter and great for boxing in my opinion. The avatar took some finding but i finally got one i'm happy with. :D

No i missed last weeks. ****, i bet that was entertaining. He does say some shocking things but he does amazing things for the sport in my opinion. Boxing needs character and fans love someone who's different. Another thing about him too is that nobody knows 100% whether he can back up what he's saying so it leaves the unpredictability factor there too.
theironone 02-03-2005, 02:28 PM He's always talked **** and nearly always backed it up but now he's in with the big boys it's be interesting to see what happens, just think if he does chin all the best fighters, he'll hav a ****in field day, it'l be 'quote aplenty'

I think he'll back it up to be honest. The only thing i need to see to convince me is how he handles a prime heavyweight punch. He has the speed and skills to beat any top heavyweight at the moment. Ruiz maybe his first victim and i cannot wait. :D
cmason 02-03-2005, 02:32 PM i'm a big bhop fan but you have to accept he's not going to last forever, he is 40 after all. having said that he'll beat eastman easily (and i'm english) and if he fights tito again his ringcraft and experience will win over the rather one-dimensional trinidad.
I actually think that Eastman has a better chance than Taylor right now maybe if Taylor had more experience he would beat him now.
dansweeney 02-03-2005, 03:14 PM No, Im not clown and I like Bernard more then Tito

Super_Lightweight 02-03-2005, 03:19 PM Ruiz maybe his first victim and i cannot wait.
I'm not as sure of that as you are. Even if Toney can still do well on the inside for a long 12 rounds, it's not going to help him if the refs let Ruiz cheat and smother him to death.
All I'm saying is, given their styles, I would not be surprised at all if Ruiz won.
GattiFan 02-03-2005, 03:34 PM Hopkins wants nothing to do with Taylor. You dont want to fight the youngest, strongest middleweight contender as your farewell party. Unless you want to secure your legend. Problem for BH is that legend could be getting dominated in his last fight. He doesnt want that. He knows he can beat eastman and tito.
Toney KO's Ruiz then KO's Stormy Normy two seconds later for coming into the ring screaming like a crackhead about his fat, hugging puerto rican getting his ass handed to him.
Xecutioner 02-03-2005, 05:08 PM the only thing i can see after studying my collection is i believe his stamina is not where it once was. he has to pace himself alot more but this has been the case for a while now. his reflexes are still there, hes still got speed, his stamina is still GREAT just not GODLY like it used to be. the chin is still there, the skill is still there. lets not get ahead of ourselves here, hes no where near roy jones' state

I believe he has already secured his legend. Fighting a prospect is not what an accomplished Champion wants to do for his final fight.
DiegoFuego 02-03-2005, 08:04 PM If I'm Hopkins, I definitely fight Taylor. Taylor looks to be the guy most likely to rule when Hopkins is gone so a win over him would be huge for Hopkins. It's like Lewis beating Vitali. Lewis retired, having beaten the guy that took over when he was gone. Well, Vitali will most likely take over. Anyway, if Hopkins loses, it's more of a passing of the torch kind of thing. If Hopkins loses now, it's because he's old.
hey guess what dickhead? at 40 anybody is gonna slow down, thanks for the keen insight captain obvious

Toney and Hopkins are both so good at going the distance because they are so relaxed in the ring. When you can fight at a slow pace or at least keep your muscles relaxed, your heart doesn't beat as fast, giving you a lot more energy down the stretch.
That being said both these guys would be very vunerable to a quick fighter who made them run around from the start to the end, even if he wasn't a great fighter.
