yah..the pink monster that copies the enemies form.. kiddie graphics but quite good gameplay.
itsbusdriver 04-19-2006, 04:49 AM The Legend of Zelda... I still play that on my emulator every now and then
Oasis_Lad 04-19-2006, 05:12 AM paper mario 2
MickyHatton 04-19-2006, 09:30 AM I currently play FF11 Online which is an never ending game, very different to the older versions of FF and I probably play too much.
Jarlaxle 04-20-2006, 04:35 PM Oblivion just took the top spot form Pool of Radiance for me.
After those two I like Shenmue, Deus EX, Planescape Torment, and IceWind Dale
sleazyfellow 04-21-2006, 05:28 AM earthbound, finalfantasy2 and 3 for the super nintendo, also chrono trigger, those were like the last rpgs ive ever played, damn im old
Undefeated 04-21-2006, 05:37 AM Xenogears BABY!! Star Ocean 2 was also good. Very good! Paper mario for 64 was hot too.
FF 7,9 and 10 were good. I don't know if Dark Cloud 2 is a RPG but that's a good one too. Looking forward to play Valkrie Profile and Tales of Destiny 2
Jarlaxle 04-21-2006, 03:49 PM ^^Dark Cloud was my fave RPG on the PS 2. That game is ahead of its time.
hoppymarciano 04-24-2006, 08:19 AM oblivion owns
Dr.Depravity 04-24-2006, 09:17 PM The original Legend of Zelda was kick ass back in its day. Right now my favorite RPG would ge FF7.
LXi_tuner 04-24-2006, 09:47 PM morrowind no holds barred, is the best RPG ever...oblivian, though great, just didnt have morrowinds feel...
so pretty much like everyones played FF7 its like the poster game for RPG
Jarlaxle 04-25-2006, 04:39 AM more like poser game. I played it and hated it. The problem I have with FF is simple. The combat sucks for the same reason KOTORs combat sucks. You cant have deep strategy with three people, at least not after playing games with 6-8. Even worse then KOTORs in FF you couldnt even moe until this year. Only FF 11 and 12 let you move during combat. That is amazing.
There is nothing inbetween combat but random encounters so screw the stealth options that you get from other RPGS. The magic system was dated 10 years ago. You want to turn invisible or charm another character screw that. So since the rest of the game is dated you end up with a game that’s driven by CGI cut scenes, and story because the rest of the game is horribly dated. The problem is if you are above the age of 10 or you read, FF’s writing in incredibly juvenile, cliché, and witless. Then you add the fact that Squaresoft uses some odd cyberpunk setting that reminds me of a cross between the Neverending Story, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and an old muppet movie called the Dark Crystal. All and all it’s the Britney Spears of RPGs. Calling it style without substance would be kind. No style or substance is more accurate.

hahahaha
Youre a hater if i ever saw one.
I mean really, even if you want to dismiss most people opinion here as unlearned in RPG's,the game received great media reviews.
JDizzle79 04-25-2006, 05:54 AM Neverwinter Nights and all the expansion packs
Da Iceman 04-25-2006, 08:44 AM star wars knights of the old republic 1 or 2.
Shanus 04-25-2006, 09:36 AM Final Fantasy VII.
oldgringo 04-25-2006, 01:28 PM Yeah that Final Fantasy VII game sure sucks....
I wonder why so many ****ing people LOVE it then? (myself included)
Great characters, story, simple yet fun gameplay...
I can't stand people who get all high and mighty like they are the king of rpg's and know all...if the game isn't your thing then that's fine, but calling it a "bad" game is ridiculous.
puppy_dogg 04-25-2006, 01:29 PM get em gringo! :D
oldgringo 04-25-2006, 01:57 PM get em gringo! :D
**** pisses me off.
Dirt E Gomez 04-25-2006, 02:05 PM I recently found a copy of Chrono Cross used for relatively cheap.... I am happy since my old copy got damaged 3-4 years ago.
puppy_dogg 04-25-2006, 02:16 PM i hear ya dude, i love ff7.
its probably one of my favorite games, not just rpg but all together favorite

I enjoyed that game. Not as much as chrono trigger, but it was still fun.
I always rolled with serge/glenn/karsh/fargo/zoah...some combo of those guys.

I admit it I wont plead the 5th I am a hater. The only good thing I saw from FF7 was the noble attempt at campy dialog. That’s one thing Oblivion lacks. Now if you really want to see quality campy dialog play Beyond Good and Evil.
Now Gringo is it really that ridiculous to call a game thats story driven a bad game if you think the story sucks? I loved Beyond Good and Evil. It had some interesting picture taking decent action combat. That alone would not have been enough I had to like the story, voice acting and characters. With FF7 it was none of the above. The characters were cliché, the story was right out of a 3rd grade adventure book, and the voice acting was absent.
The Raging Bull 04-25-2006, 03:12 PM My fave is fable. what a game! im always bad on it lmao cnt resist
:boxing:
LXi_tuner 04-26-2006, 08:44 PM fable was good the first time through and maybe the second, but it felt like they left a lot of substance out...the world felt incomplete...
Mattyp151 04-26-2006, 10:23 PM Skies of Arcadia on Dreamcast was the most fun RPG I played.
My fave is fable. what a game! im always bad on it lmao cnt resist

fable was fun but was way to short i like the games that really take some dedication
Undefeated 04-28-2006, 01:47 AM Right now ima have to say Kingdom Hearts 2.. That game is good. Good story so far.

Valid point but I hardly think just because a majority of people like something that it's automatically a great thing. Hopefully we can agree on that.
Anyway, I enjoyed playing FFVII more than experiencing the story. I liked the materia system for it's simple but cool combinations. I haven't played it in a while but as I stated in another thread, I don't recall the story being complete. I mean they plain rushed that game out. Yeah Sephiroth is probably the coolest looking bad guy in RPG history, but his motives weren't made completely clear, he was just pissed off. I was hoping for a little more. And Cloud went on to make RPG history as becoming the posterboy for future Protagonists. Which I didn't think was a good thing.
But i'll concede that as an ensemble the cast was memorable. That's my piece.
RPG's I like:
Shadow Hearts Covenant(so so underrated)
Skies of Arcadia(very upbeat, but that's the charm)
Knights of the Old Republic(one word: Revan ;))
Final Fantasy III/VI(so much to do, so many memories)
Suikoden I & II(Fliktor > all)
Lunar: Silver Star Story(oldschool done right)

How old were you when you first played FFVII? I was 12 years old when it came out, and the LAST thing I was thinking while playing the game was, "man, this game lacks voice acting, has plot-holes, and has cliche characters."
I just wasn't capable at that age of critically breaking down games at that stage of my life. They were either really fun, just OK, or they sucked. Now that I go back and play the game, I can see that the game has it's flaws, but so doesn't every game.
That game was just very engaging at that time...and I've never lost love for it sense. I have a feeling that you guys were much older than I was on your first run thru.
oldgringo 05-02-2006, 01:57 AM Thoth...
I wasn't trying to imply that just because millions of people love the game, it automatically makes it a great game for everyone. I was trying to say that because it has done so well that it's kind of hard to say it sucks.
It's kind of like saying the Sopranos is a ****ty show, when ratings would say otherwise.

That's the only FF game I'll play, and I WILL conquer it before I die.

It's been nothing but downhill since season 1 ;)
On a side note, I'm over halfway done with Chrono Cross and once that's finished I plan to pick up KOTOR 2 and begin playing it. I heard it's not nearly as good as the first once, which worries me since the first one wasn't overly enjoyable in my eyes.

I was younger than that, 10 maybe 11. Great game.
I love the Final Fantasy Series, but as a kid, I loved the old Dungeon and Dragons games on C64; like curse of the azure bonds.

I was either 19 or 20. I was an immature adult when it came to literary knowledge. I read a lot more now then I did then. I read at least 1-4 books a month so now its like 90% of RPGs have average or ****ty stories. Back then what spoiled FF for me was the Commodore 64. That system had some RPGs for you especially the Gold Box games. They were based on modules created by authors. So with those games you at least had something that could survive on a paperback, also the game mechanics were more advanced. Console RPGs are just now catching up to what PC RPGS were doing ten years ago.

I was about 16 or 17 and most of my literary upbringing was on Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels. So immediatly i'll start comparing and contrasting stories and characters. So it's probably not fair of me to stack up FFVII against a book, but that's just something i'm always going to end up doing.
And to be fair RPG's pretty much require anywhere between 20-60+ hours of your time and have become so heavy on the narrative that if it's not satisfying then wtf did I just spend my time and money on? I want the total experience.
But the point you make is certainly worth considering. I mean I enjoy playing a lot of long winded role playing games, but my best memories are of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Mario World :) and those games didn't have **** for storylines (well maybe Zelda), but it didn't matter cause they were just fun. Something to be said about youth I suppose... ;)
So whats the best RPG on the market right now, that came out in the last 2 yrs?
Jarlaxle 05-05-2006, 01:09 PM So whats the best RPG on the market right now, that came out in the last 2 yrs?
Oblivion easy. Those guys at Bethesda gave a crab ragdoll physics.

The materia setup kicked ass. The Final Fantasy series has had many different ways to arm up or whatever. But nothing worked as seemless as the materia. In FF10pt2 I did like the dress shperes. They were simple and powerful. I mean all you had to do was get them and gain AP. FFX I didn't care for the shere grid all that much. FF9 I barely remember their system :D FF8 was alright but every time you wanted to use a special skill, you lost magic or whatever.
Keleneki 05-27-2006, 12:41 PM Those Final Fantasy games were a lot of fun. Wizardy (I could not stop playing that orginal one back in the day). Xenogears. Zelda. Chrono Trigger. So many but those are the ones that I can think of right now. Currently, Oblivion. ;)
FibreOptic 05-27-2006, 12:50 PM One of my favourites is Final Fantasy 8. The last boss is beyond hard. It literally takes about three hours to beat her. You also have no guarantee that you will everytime. You can get two hours into the fight, mis-time something, and get your party wiped out. You should be able to at least save after each of the final boss' form.

once you get irvine, rinoa and squalls final limit breaks shes cake.
it's really fun if you throw in a holy war on your second play thru. :D
Dirt E Gomez 05-28-2006, 07:47 PM FFVIII's problem was how easy it was...other than that I enjoyed it thuroughly. Strengh junction on Squall = Ultima. Enter every fight injured badly and just Renzokuken for 9999 x (however many hits you get).

Man I thought FF9 was the easiest goddamn final fantasy ever. I barely remember it it went so quick.
lefthooklacy11 05-30-2006, 10:59 PM Morrowind and Oblivion are my favorites, though the KOTOR series is pretty cool too.

LOL! Hard? That game was easy at the end game. All you do is cast aura on Squall, and do lionheart limit break twice. Thats it, game over lol. If you get down to 1 health you just cast mega elixir.
I recall enjoying Legend of Dragoon when that first came out.
I recall enjoying Legend of Dragoon when that first came out.
that game was amazing i really enjoyed it gamespot ridiculously underated it though
LoftyDog 06-05-2006, 04:27 AM I think the only RPG I ever got into was Wild Arms, I'm not a big fan of them but for some reason I really liked that game.
I was big into playing the Icewind Dale & Baldur's Gate series some time ago, and still sit down and play them the odd time...
I guess out of the two I'd say my favourite was the Icewind Dale series(particularily IWD II).
oldgringo 06-05-2006, 05:17 AM Man I thought FF9 was the easiest goddamn final fantasy ever. I barely remember it it went so quick.
there were some rough parts the first time through. the castle where you have to do all kinds of puzzles and your magic is sealed was fairly challenging. the floating castle was a bit difficult as you'd run out of supplies if you ****ed around too long (plus some of the enemies would use status attacks against you). the ozma battle was VERY tough the first time i tried it. necron is fairly tough because he uses the gayest attack in ff history grand cross (even though it's dumbed down a bit). he also uses two other very devastating attacks and heals himself fairly frequently.
those little goat looking ****ers are tough too on that small little island. the ones that expell a character from battle and cast comet like it's their job.
the chocograph sidequest is kind of challenging unless you cheat.
all in all, i thought it was one of the tougher ff games all things included.

Those are two of my faves too. The battle with Malavon in IWD 1 was my favorite scrap in any RPG. That amazing son of a ***** would teleport all over the screen summoning monsters and clouds of acid, fire, lice, and sickness. Then when you finally corner him he has his own spell called Malavons Rage that does serious damager to anyone standing near him. The good thing is after you kill him you get a Malavons Rage spell of your own.

Im playing Dragon Quest VIII now.
vandiar 06-06-2006, 02:38 PM NES: faxanadu, Ultima exodus final fantasy...... turbo grafx: final lap twin ( cool ass game) SNES: chrono trigger, earthbound, secret of mana, legend of zelda: a link to the past, super mario rpg.. was all the games i grew up with. then went to suikoden, star ocean 2 etc etc
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y8/SnoopySmurf/Misc_Pix/CloudandAeris.jpg
memorable moment in gaming right there
SnoopySmurf 06-09-2006, 12:59 PM I got ALL my summon materia in FF7 to be reborn. It was a long long task but it was enjoyable, nonetheless. And raising Chocobos are fun. Especially the black ones.
