View Full Version : Fight of the Year 2004 through 10/2/04
neils7147933 10-04-2004, 12:49 AM What has been the fight of the year through Saturday night so far? Vote and give a couple sentences as to why you chose that fight. I'll add mine later. I've got it narrowed down to 2-3 in my mind. There's still a couple big cards coming up, but the fight of the year very well may have already happened.
techn9ne 10-04-2004, 01:54 AM i see the Ruiz-Oquendo is not an option
shame on you
psychopath 10-04-2004, 05:56 AM Action and suspense wise . . . I'm for Pacquiao/Marquez. It's a never ending thrill from round 1 up to the last round with no fghter backing up to give the other fighter a chance to dictate the fight.
Verbl_Kint 10-04-2004, 07:01 AM I would have to agree with the cigar-smoking gentleman. Pac-JMM was a war between two stylistically and technically different boxers. It was great to watch. THe Mayorga-Trinidad fight ain't bad too.
puppy_dogg 10-04-2004, 07:14 AM i thought mayorga-trinidad was the best so far. great performance from both fighters. they both showed alot and have alot to be proud of.
chito 10-04-2004, 07:20 AM pacquiao-marquez because no one could really tell who really won, they should settle the score once and for all!

I was trying to forget that fight happened this year. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
chilly9876 10-04-2004, 10:57 AM marquez vs pac man
excellent comeback by marquez, excellent back and forth battle, jus never knew who was gonna win...amazing

I agree. That was by far the best fight I have seen this year and probably in the last couple years.
MayweatherII 10-04-2004, 12:02 PM Trinidad vs Mayorga...hands down!!!!!!!!!

Hahahahahahaha....Now that fight was truly amazing in a boring way
neils7147933 10-04-2004, 12:33 PM Trinidad vs Mayorga...hands down!!!!!!!!!
It was an exciting fight to watch, even for a guy pulling for El Matador. But Ricardo quit being "competitive" for a few rounds, so I didn't think it approached Gatti-Ward level. It was my third or fourth favorite fight of the year. I thought Lacy/Vanderpool, being just as action packed (though without the taunting so much), and competitive the whole way through, Lacy having so much rage and energy, was the fight of the night Saturday, though.
ELPacman 10-04-2004, 01:13 PM Without a doubt, Manny vs Marquez. I know Mayorga vs Tito was a great fight though cmon, a 1 sided fight the whole way through isn't all that exciting except for watching a guy dish out punishment and the other guy being able to withstand. It was almost equal to Gatti-Ward 1 except being that one guy didn't have much a chance at all which makes a big difference. Manny vs Marquez had my heart beating from beginning to end after I noticed Marquez wasn't going to want to lose it while Manny trying to keep the momentum in his favor. Was amazing fight.

How could you say Maoyrga didnt have a chance at all? The guy was dropping bombs the whole fight.
LuKahnLi 10-04-2004, 02:30 PM Unlike previous years there is no far and away winner. I thought Pemberton vs. Sheika was the best personally.
m00ks 10-04-2004, 06:03 PM How could you say Maoyrga didnt have a chance at all? The guy was dropping bombs the whole fight.
I'll tell you why.
Mayorga's energy lasted 3 rounds. He fought for the next 5 rounds, but I mean come on, he was dead tired to teh point where he became target practice for Tito who landed over 60% of his punches. I don't remeber the last time a fight made me stand up out of my chair (when Mayorga stuck out his chin and did a wobbly leg dance) that **** was exciting. But after the first, you knew who was gonna win.
Pac-Marquez got my vote. It was closer and harder to call.
borikua 10-04-2004, 06:05 PM Tito-Mayo hands down. And The worst DLH-Nard.
ELPacman 10-04-2004, 08:37 PM Yeah exactly. Mayorga tired fast after the first rd. From then on he was throwing even more wild shots than he normally does. Then the few that he landed had little effect on Tito. Meanwhile every shot Tito landed meant something and showed. Ya the only thing that got me going was when Mayorga stood their taking shots though that's about it. The rest was almost feeling bad and good at same time watching Mayorga take a beating.(Good that it showed his bravery, Bad that it could have caused permanent damage).
Verbl_Kint 10-05-2004, 04:33 PM It looks to be a dead heat for JMM-Pac and Tito-Mayorga.
neils7147933 10-06-2004, 11:39 AM It looks to be a dead heat for JMM-Pac and Tito-Mayorga.
Those are the two I imagine the boxing journalists will have at the top of their lists, too. I'm surprised no votes for Corrales-Freitas though.
abdiel2k3 10-06-2004, 12:05 PM hands down JMM-Pac fight
it was competitive form start to end
not like tito
once tito began to dictate the fight there wasnt much Mayorga could do
Tito-Mayo and V.Klitschko-sanders were two very exciting one sided ass whoppens
the other fighters had their punch or two
but they werent as competitive as JMM-Pac
now that was a fight
MetalVomit 10-06-2004, 12:09 PM Tito-Mayo hands down. And The worst DLH-Nard.
Tito/Mayo was breath taking, but a one sided slugfest cant be fight of the year when we had the ridiculously amazing fight between Juan M. Marquez and PacMan. That fight was unbelievable. Also, you cant call a tactical, if not boring chess match the worst fight of the year(i'm sensing some bias in this post)in DLH/Bernard, when we had to watch a fight as bad as Oquendo/Ruiz.
THRILLAinmanila 10-11-2004, 02:47 AM Pacman-Marquez !
Thrilla from 1st round to the last !

But you knew bfor seen the Oquendo/Ruiz fight that it was going to be boring, We all expected a great fight btwen DLH/Nard, all the promotion and ppl calling it the next Leonard/Hagler...
Leonard /hagler wasn't that great of a fight to watch anyways. Pac/Marq was damn good and its hard to argue but I like Jirov and Mesi, you have to love Vassily Jirov, ****in love him!!! HE got beat down by mesi for 3/4 of that fight and then all of a sudden was murdering baby joe, 20 seconds longer and Mesi definately never fights again(that maybe true already). Imagine MAyo getting pummelled by Tito the way he did and then all of a sudden killing him the last couple rounds. Come on Jirov deserved it for his effort against TOney the previous year, lets give it to him this time!
Sweet Dick Willy 10-11-2004, 03:37 PM Trinidad vs Mayorga...hands down!!!!!!!!!
Hands down? Not a chance.
Trinidad -Mayorga was a bigger event and had a better storyline with Tito's comeback.
But that was a 6-2 fight in rounds for Trinidad.
Marquez-Pacman was two way action for 12 rounds with lots of suspense.
There wasn't much doubt after the first round that Trinidad was going to turn out Mayorga's lights.
LuKahnLi 10-11-2004, 03:39 PM I am suprised Pemberton-Sheika is not on the poll......

That's right, could there be more better fight of the year than a fight with 11 rounds of slugfest (first round excluded), which ended up without a clear winner? Both figters ended up with battered faces. :D . . . yet it's a draw.
tracylee 10-11-2004, 06:28 PM That was a tough one; too many good ones to pick from! I went with Pacquaio-Marquez for obvious reasons. With all the knockdowns Manny created, and the impressive technique of Marquez there was a little of everything that makes a fight great!!
Sweet Dick Willy 10-11-2004, 10:26 PM That pic of Vida Guerra in your avatar just caused me to have an accideent.
One of my ex's looks exactly like her! What a hot piece of tail. I'd like to own her :D

You'd think so. This one is loaded with good (and difficult) choices...give 'em time, maybe some of them havent seen it yet?? ;)
urdaddyinAZ 10-13-2004, 10:37 AM Pacman-JMM hands down. Trinidad-Mayorga would have overtaken it in my mind if it had two more things:
1) If after about round 4 I would have ever felt like Mayorga could win the fight. It became very lopsided in the later rounds which just doesn't make for fight of the year IMHO.
2) If the fight would have went a few more rounds.
JOM'S 10-13-2004, 10:56 AM PACMAN VS DINAMITA, was a competitive fight all the way to round No. 12, have you so much close round that the judges, the fans, the sports analyst, boxers could not agree to who really won.....
mic573 10-13-2004, 11:23 AM I can't decide between Pac/Marquez and Tito/Mayorga. Both had great action even though Tito/Mayorga was one-sided El Matador had his moments through out every round excluding the 5th and 8th round of course. Both were more than slugfest. Gatti/Ward 1 and 3 were slugfest. Pac/Marquez was a very skilled battle between two great little men. Tito/Mayorga had me standing up throughout most of the fight and I am a huge Tito fan. I'll go with Tito/Mayorga even though it maybe a biased judgement towards Tito who put on an excellent show of power and accuracy through Mayorga's fire.
JOM'S 10-13-2004, 01:25 PM Tito-Mayorga fight is an action paced fight but its one sided and being a Filipino I am being biased that best fight of the year PacMan-Dinamita, where are you guys vote and make the right choice, and we will get what we wish for PacMan-Dinamita II.....

I wish our 'vote' had something to do with it, then we'd all get what we want so much! ;) It would be alot easier if it was up to the fans

Don't worry about that Tracy every year HBO do that on their website. They open up a poll and announced the official winner. I'm sure they will do it again this year and that would be official.
Going back to this thread very seldom we see threads which turns out like this. . . with posters putting up sensible opinions and nobody meshing it up with their thrash (at least until now :D )

I agree. I've partaken in some mud-slinging of my own and it ruins the taste of the board (wish I had realized that sooner) so I wont be doing that anymore.

Hey no problem, we all ought to show "the child" in us sometimes, after all we are doing this for fun. Everybody here I guess is guilty of that at one point or another.

I regret the hell out of it though. It's in bad taste for a boxing forum too. Carrying on like that can give people a 'view' into your otherwise private world and I dont care for that too much.
Yarmez 10-13-2004, 07:26 PM I'm Finding hard to look past Pacquio Vs Marquez, Even though i really don't like Pacquio, it was a good fight.
But too tell you the truth i watched the Byrd Vs Golota fight, and i got to hand it to byrd for standing there and flogging it out with The Foul Pole
JOM'S 10-14-2004, 10:43 AM out of 59 votes we have a tie for PacMan-Dinamina & Trinidad-Mayorga, I hope the actual HBO Poll for fight of the year will not be this close, I really want to see Pacquaio-Marquez II.....
neils7147933 10-16-2004, 08:30 PM It'll be interesting if at the end of the year those are still the only 2 fights getting that much consideration or if Mitchell/Tszyu or Morales/Barrera III steal some votes.
jpboxer3 10-16-2004, 08:35 PM It was between JMM-Pac and Tito-Mayorga.Both fights had knockdowns and back and forth action, but Tito-Mayorga ended with a spectacular KO.I'd call it a draw, lol

I agree with you on the fight of the year. However, as sad as it makes me...I have to give "beating of the year" to pacquiao vs. MAB. That was terrible! :( (NOT that Tito didnt do a fine job of whipping that thug's ass, for he did!!! :D )
Mrpresident 10-19-2004, 01:47 PM JMM v. PAC
Tito v. Mayorga is close second

borikua 10-20-2004, 12:39 AM Trinidad-Mayorga rd 1
PAC-Marquez rd 1
I'd say Pacquiao-Marquez was the best so far.
Trinidad-Mayorga was exciting in the 1st 2 rounds, after that it's been predicatable, moreso in the middle rounds wherein Mayorga was throwing less and taking more punishment. No, not Corrales-Freitas, one fighter decided to just quit.
