View Full Version : Does liquid play a factor in calorie burning?
Tony Blitz 03-29-2006, 04:49 PM Let's say you drank 200 calories worth of pure orange juice compared to 200 calories of bread/meat/which ever solid. Would burning them both take the same amount of time according to calorie measuring machines like eliptic trainers or treadmills? It doesn't seem like it would but I'd like a more detailed description to why, thanks.
tebe6sm 03-29-2006, 05:00 PM They burn relatively the same. Calories are derived from protein, carbs, and fat. Simple carbs burn right away, leading to insulin ****es, and are relatively high on the glycemic index, meaning they don't keep you full for long. On the other hand complex carbs, which are slow digesting and result in less of an insulin ****e, are low on the GI and keep you full longer. Fat takes longer to burn than the carbs because one gram of fat has 9 calories, while one gram of carbs or protein only has 4. I kinda just rambled so I hope that makes any sense at all.
And the difference between juices and foods like breads and meat is that juices are primarily made from simple sugars.

So to sum this up, juice DOES burn faster than solids?
tebe6sm 03-29-2006, 05:09 PM If you're looking for weight loss, I'd advise against juices and eat real fruit. It's much better for you: less calories and it's not processed. Pretty much all processed food is crap compared to real stuff.

I knew all of this already, thanks though :p. I was just wondering if I really had to spend 15 minutes on the excercise bike to burn off a glass of OJ.

oj doesnt burn faster cuz its a liquid, it burns faster because it contains simple sugars (fructose) which burn off faster than say, fats, which have to go through hydrolysis before they can be turned into usable energy.
but id lay off any drinks with sugar. if youre tryin to cut weight, you should just be drinkin water.
SlightlyStoopid 03-29-2006, 09:01 PM I should take a look at my human nutrition notes from class :\

yrrej 03-30-2006, 06:51 AM Water plays a key role in digestion by dissolving nutrients and making them available for further breakdown into nutrients. Liquid vitamins, nutrients, and medications are typically absorbed much more quickly than solids, which must be liquefied first in the digestive tract....
