View Full Version : MMA...who's the best...
JDizzle79 03-29-2006, 03:28 AM Pound for Pound...who is the King of MMA?! I pose this question because I have recently gotten into this aspect of the fight game and I must say Fedor Emelianenko or Wanderlei Silva have impressed me the most. What do you all think?
the giant one 03-29-2006, 05:07 AM probably should have put this in the MMA forum. And id say Fedor is the man right now. Its hard to find a ***** in his armor at the moment
enadeus 03-29-2006, 09:44 AM Fedor and Shogun.
Left2body 03-29-2006, 12:00 PM I would have to go with Wanderlie. His aggressive style is exciting and he is excellent at kicks, knees, punches and tenacious when he's on top. His brazilian background really helps him versus those slick submission guys. The only thing that might be a negative is that we dont really know how good he is if he gets on his back.
opethdrums 03-30-2006, 02:17 AM gomi.. he has a granite chin and can strike with the best of them. he also dominates sub-wrestling competition. if he was a heavyweight he would beat the **** out of fedor and i can say that with confidence
watch what he does about 1 minute into the video

No one else equals this guy. No one. Years from now He'll be looked upon as a legend for this sport. He's already a living legend actually. This guy is pretty much the Ali of ground fighting.
He doesn't look very athletic and yet his stamina is unbelievable. He's very fast too. His judo and sambo technics are amazing. and He also happens to be the smartest fighter in mma.
He's in a league of his own.
But as far as the rest is concerned. P4P there's Penn , Gomi , George St Pierre , Vitor Ribeiro, Norifumi Yamamoto , Joachim Hansen...

No way dude. Get real. Yes , gomi is a fantastic fighter, one of the very best.
But He recently got owned. He just lost vs Marcus Aurelio via Technical Submission (Arm-Triangle choke). He lost 2 or 3 days ago. Obviously, He has a major weakness on the ground vs the cream of the crop of ground fighting specialists. His only other loss via sub came from Penn back in 2003. (via Submission (Rear Naked Choke).
If Gomi (as a HW) would fight vs someone such as Fedor. He'd get subbed in no time!
flipside 04-03-2006, 10:33 PM what the **** is up with tito ortiz?

Isn't Gomi really a fighter at like 140-150 lb's. but he fights at a much higher weight? So you gotta give it to him he is still a fasinating fighter.
The Ensanity 04-09-2006, 10:31 PM Gomi cant grapple in his guard in MMA
Gomi looked like **** versus Penn and just recently looked like ****....
Why???
Cause he SUCKS on his back. He got tapped for going for a half gaurd sweep and did it WRONG. He cant be best p4p
IAMTHEGREATEST 04-09-2006, 11:18 PM whens royce cracies next fight?

No, not in his last fight. His recent loss had nothing to do with weight disadvantage.Marcus Aurelio (his opponent) , weighs about 155 lbs. Gomi weighs the same.
It's just that He was outmatched on the ground.
Gomi is an amazing fighter imo. One of the very best.
But He'll always lose vs guys like Penn or Aurelio if He doesn't quickly fix his weaknesses on the ground.
Gomi is very experienced on the ground too though..But that's not enough.

UFC 59 - Reality Check Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin April 15th, 2006
So He's back.
I don't care.
this guy is the coolest though (http://www3.youtube.com/watch?v=uaF2ygKJ38w&search=genki%20sudo%20highlight)
hard for me to say much, as i don't watch as much mma as i used to - but fedor is a monster from what i have seen.
my faves though - "the gracie hunter" and genki sudo.
and if you include san shou - cung le totally outclassed everyone he fought under those rules.
Crocop, but im a nuthugger...
unit021 05-11-2006, 12:47 PM p4p would have to be Fedor. i'm not a fan of his, but the guy is an amazing athlete. he has decent stand up offense and defense, his ground game is superb and his GnP revolutionized MMA. he hasn't lost since 2001. he's on a 20 win streak with just one no contest. the man is a legend.
other fighters who rank highly with me are Norifumi KID Yamamoto, Hideo Tokoro (not top 10, but highly entertaining and seen as the working class hero), Wanderlei Silva, Mauricio Shogun Rua, Mark Hunt, Mirko Cro Cop Flipovic (i mean the dude is a congressman in Croatia and was SWAT and made a hilarious commercial for razors), Tatsuya Kawajiri and Mamoru.
Gomi is a special case. his hand speed, solid chin, and accuracy are amazing. Aurelio was the first person that i've seen in recent memory who took Gomi down to the ground. what's even crazier is that Gomi stated that he knew Aurelio would go for an arm triangle (since that's his favorite sub) and was training to defend against it. too bad that didn't happen. i like Gomi for his stand up, but even with his skills in sub wrestling, it's like he can't be a complete package or he focuses too much on one thing. i think that Gomi needs to go back and watch his losses to see what he can do better. he's an exciting fighter standing up, but his ground game at the moment needs a bit more work.

He is main priority is his family, he truely is a respectable man. He has said that as soon as his MMA career interferrs with his family he will retire, its amazing hes able to balance all of that. If more people knew about Cropcop he would be a role model to their children, hes a successful man.
I had no idea he was a congressman though.
12) Mirko Filipovic
11) Rich Franklin
10) Dan Henderson
9) B.J. Penn
8) Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
7) Wanderlei Silva
6) Chuck Liddell
5) Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
4) Mauricio Rua
3) Matt Hughes
2) Takanori Gomi
1) Fedor Emelianenko

Based on the few fights that I've seen of him (youtube has atleast two, I think), and a little of what I have read about him, Edson Drago might very well be a bigtime player in the heavyweight division in the next couple of years if/when he's signed to one of the two major promotions (if he does, it'll probably be Pride)...
Mean as hell, very aggressive, some obvious top-notch striking skills for MMA (quite powerful with his punches), and as a member of Brazilian Top Team you'd have to think that he's very competant on the ground...or at least will be soon enough because of the great opportunity he has of training with the guys he does.
A lot of you guys probably already know of him, but for those who don't, he might be a heavyweight to keep an eye on for the near future.
unit021 05-11-2006, 06:59 PM last i saw of Drago, he won at the K-1 show, beating Ole Laursen. at least that's if i'm remembering correctly. everyone said that he was really impressive. but i'm pretty sure he's fighting at middleweight.

Nah, Drago has been fighting at heavyweight as of late, as he was listed at 6'1-220 for his last fight in Cage Rage...Not overly big for heavyweighht, but looks like a pretty friggin solid/muscular at the weight he is at (also undefeated at 8-0).
Here's a clip of his last fight;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpGuTUc-VCU&search=edson%20drago
The fight before that was supposed to be his big coming out party from what I here, as he literally destroyed what was thought to be the better Brazilian prospect, Helio Dipp, in a matter of about 20 seconds...Drago just completely overwhelmed Dipp, and even landed a few cheap shots after the fight was stopped by the ref.
Here's another video of Edson Drago for anyone interested;
