I'm new to the forum and have been training in the Muay Thai/Boxing scene for a year now. I've been leaning more towards the boxing scene for awhile now and am interested and learning the Shoulder Roll defense, even though i've learned to roll punches, the rare fighting style now and days has caught my attention. I know it was famous along time ago and now the art has been left to Mayweather and Toney. If I can get all ya guys know about the defense and the countering technique and all that, it will help me out a lot. THANKS

Parry the left jab with the right hand, roll the left shoulder to the right to cover the chin for the right cross. You can drop the left forearm across the abdomen parallel to the floor to cover the midsection. Then roll the right shoulder to the left with the hand and arm covering the jaw and ribs to absorb the left hook.

Thanx for the example, explained nice yrrey, and coming from boxer2k5 (a Toney fan) I see your advice is official. But no trainers my way teach the shoulder roll as more then just one defensive move not a complete defense like Floyd and Toney use it. So I'm trying to use this site and it's users from across the world to find some advise. Great help so far, if anyone has advice hit it up. Thanx again

make sure you keep your chin tucked in...you have to think fast...and whenever your roll, come back with a counter..thats basically why its good...you get great counter shots

Damn thats a great example. :D I am also interested in learning this style of defense since i naturally like to counter.
All the trainers around here teach basic styles of D, nothing like James Toney Defense.
Any instructional videos or anything out there i can buy to become a little more familiar with this?

I think this is what my trainer has been showing me, this is where you implement the shovel punch (I think thats what its called) - where your left hand across your ribs is palms up when going to their body?
