Hit pedestrian responsible for damage

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) - A Mexican man in hospital with a possible skull fracture and other injuries after being struck by a car is being held responsible for damages to the vehicle.

Sergio Segundo Ruiz, 60, was hit Monday about 10:30 p.m. local time when he crossed an avenue, apparently without taking any precautions, said Jose Adan Reyes, an official from the city's traffic department.

Under local law, crossing the street with disregard for safety and approaching traffic is an infraction, Reyes said.

A city police officer was posted outside Segundo's hospital room. The owner of the 1986 Ford Taurus involved in the accident was freed and is awaiting payment for the damages, the extent of which were not released.

Note that the pedestrian was 60 years old!!

In most countries that I have been to, pedestrians almost always have the right of way. Drivers are expected to take extra care and give way, like to stop or slow down if possible, even if pedestrians are clearly violating traffic rules, such as crossing on red lights or in non-crossing lanes.

The rationale here is that human lives are more precious than jalopies. Or is it?

It was 10:30 at night.....& the guy was apparently in an area where he couldnt be seen.
The driver should suffer no consquences.....
If he did, I guess everyone should just give up driving ? Because, it's impossible to see everything....all the time.

But, the old man shouldn't be responsible, either. He's paying enough.
It was an accident.

I agree it was dumb of him, but he has enough problems as is at this point. It'd be one thing if he was young and healthy but he is an older guy and he may even have poor eysight. There are a lot of variables here.

Note the pedestrians last name was Ruiz, maybe thats why they are punishing so severly, got him confused with someone else?

I think that's bs, he's 60 years old, he is paying enough by having his skull fractured, let alone having to pay for the car. That's pretty weak **** if you ask me.
