View Full Version : Ike Quartey
oldgringo 10-03-2004, 06:02 PM As I think of Ike "Bazooka" Quartey (one of my favorite fighters ever) a few questions wandered into my head. Why did he just leave after losing to Vargas? I always thought it was because he just lost interest and went back to Ghana to be with his family. I think he still had so much to give to boxing and could have won a belt had he kept going. Man...sometimes he looked invincible and that jab was one of the most thunderous, stiff jabs I have ever seen...what do you all think? He was only 30 or 31 when he retired...could he have made waves after the Vargas fight?
Sir_Jose 10-03-2004, 06:09 PM I think if he really wanted it he could have taken Vargas that night. He was coming off a year long layoff going into that fight. If I remember right he had Vargas in some trouble in the 9th(I aint seen the fight in awhile)
Remember at the end Ike only had like two fights in three years.
I had Ike losing to DLH. DLH took the fight in the final round with the kn****down in my opnion.
Ike always struck me as a guy who had tons of talent but didn't really love boxing. I get the same impression you get about him and that is that he just retired to be with his family. I think he could of easily won another belt after the Vargas fight.
I think he is one of the biggest waste of talents in this generation.

That's the thing...his inactivity really hampered his fighting. I scored the DLH fight for Oscar but only because of the knockdown in the 12. Man what a fight. I wish Ike would have devoted more of himself to boxing.

How can you say he was a waste of talent in this generation? Have you ever met the man or been in his company? Were you ever over at his house for dinner? Do you talk to him on a daily basis?
Do you even know what its like to be in the ring? I used to box when I was a younger kid and I know that its no joke...they throw you in the fire once you step in the gym. Getting knocked threw the ropes isnt' very fun either. I imagine getting punched flush in the face by DLH and Vargas doesn't help your I.Q. and probably the Bazooka would have suffered brain damage much like Vargas will if he wants to keep fighting.

what the hell are you talking about?
are trying to tell me Ike was 100% dedacated to boxing? are you trying to tell me Ike fuffiled his potential?
The answer is NO to all of them. Its not a knock on him its the truth.

If Muahammed Ali @ old age is his potential then I'm glad he left.

Ike was nowhere near being in the same position as Ali at the nd of his career.
Ike was still young and could still be a legit p4p guy.

Everytime I saw Ike fight he was always getting SMACKED!
But those africans got HARD ass chins...look at Kassim Ouma.
Imagine if RJJ had a chin like Ike. Scary thought.

When did you see him fight? Against DLH and Vargas?
Ike Quartey's fight with Oscar de la Hoya was the most memorable for me. Back in those days & weight class when Oscar was still a devastating 1-punch KD/KO fighter, Ike gave the Golden Boy one tough fight. Round 6 was the most entertaining, Oscar KD'd Ike early in the round with his patented left hook...Ike gets up and raises his hand signalling that he's OK, goes back to work and returns the compliment - sends Oscar to the seat of his pants with his own quick left counter, and had DLH backpedalling the rest of the round.
I agree that he was still capable of coming back after that loss to Vargas. Truly one of those talented fighters who could've made a come back but never did.
Sir_Jose 10-06-2004, 07:33 PM Well acording to this site Ike is coming back!!.
Boxingscene:This not a joke, this time, the comeback rumors of Ike Quartey are for real. Ghanaweb.com is reporting that former WBA welterweight champion Ike “Bazooka” Quartey, will be make a return to the ring in December, over three years since his last ring appearance against Fernando Vargas. Here is a fighter that I must say left way too early, he still had plenty of good fights left in the tank. Ike Quartey is apparently not coming back at the welterweight level or junior middleweight, Ike plans to campaign at the middleweight level of 160 pounds.
Ike is looking for big fights against the likes of Bernard Hopkins, Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya. Quartey will have a tuneup bout in Ghana to get rid of some of the ring rust in December and will look to much bigger fights after that. Quartey left Ghana on Sunday to travel to the United States for negotiations with his new US promoter, Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment.
Ike is also looking a to add a top American trainer, to join up with longtime trainer Oko Odamtten.
“I do not expect Oko Odammten to be offended by this decision. He knows I had good intentions and I beleive he would embrace the idea. After all, we both want progress,”
“I never mentioned to anyone that I was quitting boxing,” he told the Graphic Sports in an interview last week.
“Two heads are better than one. Obviously, too much fish do not spoil the soup,” Odamtten said
Quartey is already getting ready for his December bout. He runs for an hour every morning and works out at his private gyms at his Kokrobite and Gbawe. Odamtten said Quartey will begin an intensive training schedule when he returns in a week’s time.
bigdlb12 10-06-2004, 07:43 PM I would like to see IKE vs Mosley or Spinks,if he is still anything like he use to be
oldgringo 10-06-2004, 08:17 PM This is great news...I'm looking forward to seeing Ike back in the ring. I wonder if he still has that nasty jab of his.
techn9ne 10-07-2004, 06:41 AM ike was the man
we were all lucky to have been able to see him fight
i like ike !!!!
but he plans to campaign at middleweight ... isnt it too high ?
he was a huge welter and strong junior middle , but at middleweight he may suffers the shane"i m too stocky and i cant put combos anymore" mosley syndrom.
still i miss the sound of his punches (pschiit boum , p****t boum).
BTW , he doenst have that great of a chin , he used to train next to my home in france , and a few european fighters knocked him down in sparring ( yeap).

Supafly25 10-07-2004, 09:48 AM its hard to believe they would have even been sparring with each other. there on 2 opposite ends of the spectrum.
Dark Destroyer 10-07-2004, 09:51 AM Lennox Lewis was knocked down by Manny while training
The posts i have read from you so far are so far from the truth so how the hell do you expect anyone to believe this?
You were the guy who posted:
Wlad was drugged vs Sanders!
Watch the fight again... during his entrance his eyes look hazey and glossy... he seemed like he wasnt all there!
That wasnt the same Wlad that night in Hanover, Germany!
Winter 10-07-2004, 09:57 AM Wez, who is Manny? Is he talking about Emanual Steward?
NichtGeflechten 10-07-2004, 09:59 AM Wez...think in the same vein as "A Modest Proposal", only this time it is a paste version vomited by an acolyte of an idiot box "icon".

Thats who i think he is talking about. I wouldn't think he is meaning Manny Pacquiao as there is about a 8 stone weight difference.

NichtGeflechten 10-07-2004, 10:43 AM Spoken like a man who knows the grind. Grumbled like a lifelong "hairnet" hair sufferer.....the only grind I am familiar with is my early a.m. coffee & Double D's over in Morristown.
i think he meant by manny sparrings , not mannt pacquiao or emmanuel steward .
techn9ne 10-07-2004, 05:16 PM supposedly their is video somewhere that manny hit lewis with the punching mits (he forgot to duck) and knocked him down
im not lying
Sir_Jose 10-07-2004, 06:12 PM Lennox Lewis was knocked down by Manny while training
Im the biggest Lewis fan on the planet and I have NEVER heard this.
100% bull****

Funny how no one has ever seen that video or hell to this point aint never even heard of that video.
and if Manny had mitts on he wouldn't be swinging on Lewis, Lewis would be the one throwing punches and working on combinations.
There are time when trainers use the mits to work on defense, but they only push the hand out there they dont swing.
Like I said you full of ****.
techn9ne 10-07-2004, 06:28 PM ok buddy they only push their hands out
get out from behind your computer and step into a real gym and get back to me will ya!
im sure lewis wasnt KO'd but i bet he was surprised he got hit and went down more as a reflex rather than he was on queer street
im doing a search for the video and ill have it your way in no time
Dark Destroyer 10-07-2004, 06:32 PM Ask him his theories on Wladimir been drugged before the Sanders fight

Yeah look the video up. Im begging you
Yeah they they dont put everything into it and swing on a fighter when they have mits on. Because mits aren't for that.
Thats what sparring is for dumbass.

techn9ne 10-07-2004, 10:54 PM i didnt make it up
