Okay, you always here in the news about terrorist groups posting stuff on militant Islamic websites. Whenever there's a car bombing of whatever like a few hours later whoever did it has something posted on some site.

My question is: do they know where these sites are based out of? I mean, if they really want to capture some of these guys, why don't they wait outside where the web server is until some guys comes to type up his message?

Do they know where these web servers are? I don't see how you couldn't at least narrow it down by looking at the trail of nodes that messages to and from the server take. Or why don't they just cut off the internet where these guys are running their servers?

Maybe they know where the servers are but they are in places that are too dangerous to get in to.

Like I said, maybe this is a stupid question.

Hi. This is not a stupid question. Tracing a server is not as easy as it seems. They could be using dynamic IP addresses and it is also possible that they are not in one location for very long. This is how some people can get away with sending millions of spam email messages and not be caught. Plus, they are overseas, which makes it even more difficult.

Hey, that's interesting. So do these sites go down a lot as they move from place to place? I thought at least they might be able to narrow down where they are be tracing the routers and other nodes that they pass through, though I guess that still leaves you with a big area to look through.

Makes a lot of sense actually.

In this age of wonder when we are sending probes to Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, and landing people on the moon, it makes me wonder if it is easier to track down the moons of Jupiter or the asteroids in the solar system than track down the location of a website, or of the cellphones that Bin Laden and cohorts are using to communicate with each other!

if they are based in another country than the US , you just cant legally shut them down. imagine they are based in ireland or jordania , it would be up to this countries to close the site.

americans sometimes seems to forget that other people are FREE.

plus it s better to have them communicate , they show themselves and their intentions. better an enemy in the light than in the shadows , no ?

Good points, but that wouldn't stop the Americans from trying to shut them down, right? I was actually wondering more why they didn't track down the people making the sites and try to get them to lead them to the terrorists.
