WASHINGTON, D.C.: Five US senators have submitted a budget request for US $106 million to pay for the long-overdue monthly pensions for Filipino World War II veterans.

The American Coalition for Filipino Veterans, a Washington-based advocacy group, said Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii), a ranking member of the Senate veterans affairs committee, four Democratic senators, and Independent Sen. James Jeffords (Vermont), made a strong pitch to give Filipino war veterans, now in the twilight of their lives, their long-overdue financial assistance.

In their March 2, 2006, “Views and Estimates Letter on the FY07 VA Budget Proposal,” to the Senate Budget Committee, Akaka and the five senators said, “We believe it is time to provide non-service connected pension for Filipino veterans, and request an additional $106 million for Filipinos who served alongside US service members during World War II.”

I was happy to see Senator Barak Obama and US Representative Rep. Lane Evans from my home state of Illinos are supporting the Filipino veterans in they're plight to get equal compensation and recognition from the US government they rightfully deserve.

I hope the Bush administration will approve this request. This is what the thousands of Filipino World War II veterans have been waiting for sixty years now. They are already in the twighlight of their lives and they need every monetary help they can get from the US government who made that promise long time ago when they fought Japanese in a brutal battle years ago. They deserve to get equal compensation and recognition that they're American brothers have been getting all these years.
