Just out of curiosity who here is a PRO (if so whats it like, money etc) or is thinking about going pro? Ive only recently started boxing and fallen in love with it, ive been a martial artist all my life but the sweet science of boxing is more satisfying. If i get any good, and PRO is a possibility... i wouldn't think twice about doing it. At my gym im not as powerful as some guys, not as fast as some guys... but my work ethic is much better then most at my gym, and my attitude. Im amazed at the amount of wise-asses there are at the gym, the trainer will try to show them something and they aren't willing to listen and learn or get pissed off and defensive when the trainer gives them constructive criticism... im always willing to listen and learn, take in as much information as i can. Anyone else seen similar shit in their gyms?

I plan on going pro next year. Apparently the money ain't great which is why most pro's have a full time job as well!

The money isn't great to start off with, if you become a hyped and very talented fighter the payday becomes awesome

I've looked at going pro, I might re-consider it a couple of years down the road. My advice to anyone going pro would be: don't count on making any money. If you want to do it for the challenge and for the love of the sport, then by all means go for it, but the vast vast majority of pro boxers don't make anything. If your one of the top ten amateur boxers in your weight class in the country then you might have a 50-50 chance of making a living at boxing if your young.

Most kids I see in the gyms these days aren't worth the powder to blow them up. They show up 2 weeks before the Golden Gloves to get ready, then disappear until the next year. Few kids are tough enough any more to make the cut. And most don't have much of a work ethic either, nor do they make any effort to figure out what the heck they are trying to do. But the pros is a whole nuther ball game. Easy to get used and abused in the meat market and the only really decent money nowadays is on the PPV's or if you are related to someone famous or have a gold medal from the Olympics. No point in boxing professionally unless you go to one of the big gyms and get a stamp of approval from one of the heavy hitters. Be ready to suffer outside of the ring. That's my opinion.

I lot of fighters turn pro when they aint ready, ive know some fighters who have 1 amature fight and then they decide to turn pro. It all depends on what u want out the sport, do u want too barley make a living and be a journey man, or have u got talent are willing to wait and develop steadily as a good fighter. Its up too u.Dont let any trainer or promoter tell u when they think u should fight. At the end of the day u will know when ur ready. Ur gonna be the one on the recieving end on a beating. Promoters and trainers i know dont give a fuk bout there fighters they pretend they do. Its all bout making people rich. When u first fight and ur unknown ull get £1000 a fight, take off 120 for ur cat scan and another chuck for tax and to pay ur managment. £800 if ur lucky and u gotta travel and wait and it takes all day. All the hours in the gym before ya fight too. Dont let me put u off but these are the facts. Only take it seriously and turn pro if u really do have talent, dont kid yaself other wise theres no money in boxing. Unless of course ur happy making a few quid and being a nobody.

Damn, their is too much negativity in this thread. Boxing is a great sport it is the sweet science. But when you break it down in its raw sence. It is a fight one man trying to defeat the other. Your toughness, chin, defence, heart, conditioning, etc. can take you far in boxing. Of course you have to have some skill or realisticly heart. Willing to accept that you are going to get hit and hit back.

First thing about boxing is that you want to box, don't worry about the money, just make sure you win. The money will be their, but you have to build up an ego, so to say. Im my opinion you have to have a big ego to survive, to defeat the other guy, to fight your ass off cause you don't want your opponet to embarres you, so you fight your ass off and win.

Some people I know complain about Vargas and his ego, but I tell them, take that away from him and he wouldn't have been able to advance as he did. When you go down you have a choice to get up, when you get hit you have a choice to hit back. A strong cofident fighter, cocky fighter, will always make a good fighter, as long as he is willing to listen.

Again, if anybody wants to try pro I say go ahead, as long as you have trained for your fight or feel you have what it takes to fight pro, then do it. Yes, you can get hurt but thats the risk in boxing, and in some sports without anybody telling you, you can get hurt in other sports. Fear should not decide your fate. Fatalism is bullshit. Take a chance and as the nike commercials say, just do it.

most people turn pro after a great win in a tournament in golden glvoes or something....others turn pro after olympics....
