why was that punch called "the phantom punch?
Ali clearly connected to listons temple & his foot comes off the ground, so its obviously a pretty sloid punch?

What, did you think it's called a Phantom punch cause his ghostly hand went through his ****ing head?

it didnt look like a big enough punch to win a fight, but looks can be decieving and the only person who ever knew Liston I guess.

It's the punch you don't see that knocks you out. :)

it was so fast initially that you couldnt see it. it also shouldnt have knocked sonny out, he has a good chin and clearly stayed down on his own accord

The punch landed cleanly but Liston could of got up. How many one punch knockouts did Ali have? And Liston was no pu$$y, but he was connected to the mob, the fix was in.

that punch did not knock liston out.
Sonny looked around for a spot to land and threw his arms in front, you could also tell by his horrible acting skills when he was on the ground.

i believe Liston just didnt want to get up, he knew he was gonna get beaten up again. A real determined Liston would of easily got up and maybe wouldn't of got knocked down at all.
He either took a dive, or just plainly lost the heart to go on.

Well, did Ali ever comment after the fight about it? I think he's the only one that knows the truth behind it. He should know whether or not his own hand connected and comment on it. Heck, he's still alive, try asking him, he MAY give you an answer!

I agree it (The Phantom Punch) landed and it's ironic you wrote this thread because this came up at a live Boxing Show just outside Toronto last night. From what I heard many boxing "mad scientists of the sweet science" still argue about the true imapct of the punch as the replay clearly shows the punch landed. Only Liston knows what kinda damage the punch did, but you gotta remember that this happened in a totally different era where pro sports being fixed was a lil more shadier than today and even if Liston took a dive, who really knows why???
