View Full Version : Is the greenhouse effect responsible for this horrible winter?
Bombardier 01-24-2005, 01:34 PM Global warming does not necessarily make things warmer everywhere...it can screw around with the weather and make things colder or create lots more rain and snow.
The weather has been messed up all over North America...rain in California, snow in Vancouver, constant snow and cold everywhere else. Are we finally seeing the consequences of our industrial pollution?

Yep...next week I'll tell you about my anti-gravity machine conspiracy theories :D .
I am asking seriously, though. I think we are messing up the planet. I'm not saying for sure that this winter has been caused by us but I'm sure we're not helping things either.
Boxerdog 01-24-2005, 02:11 PM Just kidding. I actually agree but I am crazier than you!
My personal belief is that Mother Earth is one tough old bird and has gotten tired of many more species than the best minds know about. When we overstep our bounds and do too much damage she will simply evict our asses and kick back to replenish before allowing another version of "top of the foodchain" to flourish. I believe with all my heart that the dinosaurs and us are just two of many "tenants" that ****ed up! :p

The greenhouse effect, as well as the hole on the ozone layer, both results to global warming, in which the there is a marked INCREASE in the overall global temperature.
In the greenhouse effect, the heat from the sun is trapped in the atmosphere, while in the ozone hole, the sun's UV rays are not filtered. The effect is that the earth becomes warmer and warmer, not colder. One of the consequences is the melting of the polar regions and rise in sea levels, submerging the low-lying cities.
I think this winter is pretty much regular (Winnipeg had minus 45 the past few days and has waist-deep of the white stuff!!). Keep warm and have fun in the snow while it lasts!!

If we can cause entire species to become extinct, pollute lakes beyond all repair, and make development communities where forests used to be. Why can't we destroy the atmosphere too? Its all part of the earth. Man has been able to permanantly destroy other parts of the earth.
LuKahnLi 01-24-2005, 02:16 PM Its Okay though. We saw The Day After Tomorrow.....Dennis Quaid is gonna save us all.

Well put. Funny how people think that everything we've built up is somehow "permanent" just because it lights up or makes a lot of noise or whatever. We're like the most feeble animals on Earth and it wouldn't take much to take us out of the picture.

Guy, the thing is that atmospheric temperature is only one factor that goes into determining the weather. Ocean current play a major role. If the balance of temperature across the earth changes than it can throw the currents all off which affects winds which can turn places that were warm (because they were receiving warm wind) into places that are cold (because they ain't getting the winds anymore).

Except for that old dude that fell into the mall...
That movie was based partially on real science, though the fact that it all happened in like a day is BS. Plus that doesn't make up for the lousy writing and acting.

Yeah. It really sucked.
Boxerdog 01-24-2005, 02:26 PM Dennis Quaid couldn't even keep a pock-marked Aussie from slippin' Meg Ryan the old salami! :D
I ain't counting on his skinny ass!
fist-of-fury 01-24-2005, 03:01 PM If there are unusual changes in nature or global climates, maybe the earth's liquid core has stopped moving???
Then maybe we should start building that rock-boring ship we saw in THE CORE and give the earth's center a mighty shove! :p
Anyone on this forum who's willing to volunteer for this mission? :D

...That's why I can't take him seriously anymore. When I see him or hear his name all I can think about his girl getting a hard railing from Maximus.
SonnyG8R 01-24-2005, 03:41 PM It was also an unnaturally nasty hurricane season in the Carribean and southeast US. I wonder if human activities contributed to that at all?
