rapidrio 01-24-2005, 12:47 PM The heavyweight division is so weak right now, I dont know if a 5 rating is over rated. I dont think Toney is that great of a heavyweight. Do you?

Toney is a great technical boxer/puncher, but he is overrated at Heavyweight at this point. Needs to beat someone before I'm convinced. He does have the biggest mouth

I agree with that. So many people think Toney is going to be the man in the heavyweight division, I just dont see it. I was never really a fan of his. The only thing I liked from Toney is that backwards dance he did when Jones hit him! lol

Toney did something against the old fighter that the current HW IBF champ could not 10 months prior to the Toney fight. The old man was a contender just a year before and a HW champ 2 years before the fight. The old man also won against current contender Rahman in the year before the Toney fight.
Ps Toney had no troubles with the head butts of the old man.
The fight against the nobody was for the WBC Heavyweight Title mandatory challenger #1 spot.
And some people loose against these kind of nobodies. Other people win against them, even when they hurt their arm (or leg) they win..
But Toney definitely got to prove himself this year against a legit HW to show he is still has a right to the spot he claimed.

theironone 01-24-2005, 01:37 PM ahahaha good call KJ, i'm a huge Tyson fan but i have eyes tyson circa 2003+ is shot to pieces, even against williams in the first when he nearly had him out he looked like an old man trying to fight, it all looked too hard for him even though he got a few shots off......and then it was too hard, he's capable of koing anyone but he's got to hit them first and his timing and conditioning is that bad nowadays hes good for a handful of minutes (if that), toney would kill him imo

Samuel Peter-James Toney=David Tua-Chris Byrd
---------------
Thats where we ain't gotta go.
theironone 01-24-2005, 02:29 PM Whats wrong boy, don't avoid the subject, toneys on the injury list too then, he pulled his bicep so why not cut him some slack like you do for Tyson and as far as peters goes i'll believe in him more when he beats someone half decent, yeah he's obviously heavyhanded but so was Tua and he ended up just being a contender
Floydmayweather 01-24-2005, 02:29 PM Toney would beat Tyson unless he lands a perfect shot. Toney is to smart, to fast, and difficult to hit.
Dark Destroyer 01-24-2005, 02:32 PM Toney is hyped because he has got alot of talent. He hasn't thought any top ranked people yet but he is definatly the most promissing looking package in the Heavyweights at the moment in my opinion.
Mike Tyson Jr. 01-24-2005, 02:33 PM I dont know about that I think
sam peter can beat toneys ass.
Dark Destroyer 01-24-2005, 02:35 PM The thing we ALL need to see is how Toney copes with a real heavyweight punch. Until that happens their will always be speculation.

But he's rolling around in style probably. He was the funniest thing I ever saw in the ring.
Mr. Ryan 01-24-2005, 02:46 PM Pain is Love? Is that a Ja Rule reference there? The Prince is cooler than Ja Rule.

It's not disrespect, it's called being subjective or a realist or seeing the light or opening my eyes whatever way you look at.
I've been a fan of his since i was a little boy, he was the first reason i fell in love with boxing.
I truly hoped he could of made a good comeback and be a three time champion but it won't happen, i'll be amazed if he fights again because he has too to earn a few quid then he's a fool cos he could make alot of money doing other stuff

Dark Destroyer 01-24-2005, 02:52 PM Thats all that I'm saying. I never said he was the greatest of all time, just the coolest.
He is the coolest. Nobody put on a show like he did in all aspects. I knew the Barrera fight was going to go bad when he didn't jump over the ropes into the ring.

Thats whats up. As long as he can still do the ring flip without crashing through the floor, estoy bien.

I was just looking for a show, he made boxing cool. When I first started boxing, I was real nervous and scared. But then I started thinking about how cool and calm The Prince was, and it helped me out alot.
theironone 01-24-2005, 02:56 PM ****in hell he'd snap the damn ropes, probably all four of them!!!!
Dark Destroyer 01-24-2005, 02:57 PM What proper cool :D

A thort yer wer :D

He'd probably still look cool doing that. He was The Fonz of the squared circle.

I know exactly what you mean, certain fighters give me inspiration when i train.
theironone 01-24-2005, 03:04 PM i used to think of Tyson (obviously) but also Tito he always goes to work very coolley (**** is that a new word lol)

Ah ok. :)

no crusade. i'm just tellin the truth.
how is that a crusade.

Hes over rated in the heavyweight

Beating a shot Holyfied and a no name Booker is not enough to make Toney a great contender in the HW division. He has a lot to prove before he can be considered as such. Time is not on his side, so he should start quick now. :) :) :)
markosg19 01-25-2005, 10:02 AM i say put him uin with Ruiz and see if he can do a better job than RJ. That should provide us with some sort of answer.
i think toney can beat some of the big unskilled guys like mccline, brewster, etc.. but he'll have a hard time with byrd, VK or someone of that caliber...
he's really unproven at heavy and with his age, size and injuries he may not become a factor....
Pullcounter 01-25-2005, 03:12 PM Based on his wins at HW Toney is overrated a bit. But based on the skills we see him display in the ring he's right about where he belongs. The HW division really sucks.
Truth 01-25-2005, 03:37 PM I don't think he is over rated he is a future hall of fame fighter and has great skill.
Atwa_66 01-25-2005, 03:49 PM well I went there. Tyson couldn't knock out Williams, he ain't knocking out Tubby Toney.
haha, yeah you did
And you're right, Tyson isn't anything anymore
He can't expect to sit out so long
And then come back and win a title, not happening
Mike Tysons career is finished, he will lose his next fight
And then will realize it's time to hang up the gloves
Atwa_66 01-25-2005, 03:55 PM I aint on no anti toney crusade

Are you trying to say that Tyson is a real contender?
Tyson WAS a real contender, you're caught in the 80's
Mike Tyson is, and will always be a boxing legend
But he's going to turn out like Holyfield,
And not know when it's time to stop...
My question is, when Mike Tyson retires from the sport
Which boxer is going to be your next choice Mike Tyson Jr.?
Some people seem to believe that James Toney is the man.
Why? Is it the WBC "Continental Americas Heavyweight" and IBA "Heavyweight Champ" titles? Or that whopping he put on the aging Evander? Or, could it be I missed something during that Jirov bout? Recently though, he got my attention with his domination of ...... Danny Green, now that's impressive.
Really though, Toney had his day from 1991 to 94, notably against Barkley, but those are the 'ole days. He needs to beat "somebody", soon.

I agree the guy has hardly done anything at heavweight.
hollister 01-25-2005, 10:40 PM He'll probably just get injured again, I think the weight he's carrying right now is more than his body is able to deal with, as far as sports are concerned. I'm not sure he would beat Ruiz, I'd sure like to see him do it though lol.
whdempsey 01-25-2005, 10:48 PM Wow. I am soooo bored of this topic. Let me break it down for you again.
Toney - old, blown-up middleweight, seems injury prone, not really proven at heavyweight. Also showed more skill and fighting spirit in his two outings so far than ANY FIGHTER IN THE TOP 50.
Tangentially, Tyson could no longer beat a speed-bag, let alone a skillful in-fighter with a decent dig...that sounds suspiciously like Toney, doesn't it?
whdempsey 01-25-2005, 10:51 PM He'll probably just get injured again, I think the weight he's carrying right now is more than his body is able to deal with, as far as sports are concerned. I'm not sure he would beat Ruiz, I'd sure like to see him do it though lol.
Interesting post. I may agree with you, but here's to hoping that you're dead wrong.
I'm picking Toney, but I agree, Ruiz has proven that he's tough enough to (dare I think it?) beat better fighters.
hollister 01-25-2005, 10:55 PM lol If the fight ever took place, I'd definitely be rooting for Toney, I can't stand Ruiz lol
Warrior Spirit 01-25-2005, 11:33 PM James Toney is ranked in the top 5

James Toney's skill level speaks for itself and he is one of the most technically proficient fighters in the division. This is why I think he gets such a high ranking from boxing people because the man does have skill, especially in comparison to most other HWs. However his competition at HW has not been the greatest.
So you do have a valid point.
SonnyJ 01-25-2005, 11:35 PM toney is a capable defensive fighter, he can take a punch and doesn't seem to be intimidated of anyone. his presence is good for the growth of the division.
obaioghill 01-25-2005, 11:44 PM I have been waiting for another good fight from Toney since Jirov. I admire him for what he has done - but not been overly impressed. Look who beat Holy after Toney, and was is a full week after his fight with Toney that Booker got busted for drugs? I would love to see him in there with another capable Heavy - One of the Champs would be great. A fight with John "The Hugging Man" Ruiz would be intersesting because he has the boxing skills that Ruiz has not faced since Jones gave hime a sound whipping - but Toney desent fight like Jones and Ruiz laying on him would be tough for him. Toneys style is an infrount of the guy elusivness - that would be easier to hug against then Jones' where did he go defence. I think Toney could easily out box Ruiz - but I also though Frenz would out box him and Golota.
The Phantom Menace 01-26-2005, 12:00 AM Indeed young Mike Tyson Jr. you are correct. Toney really has not proven himself at this weight. He defeated Holyfield who is way past his prime, he would have been Kayoed by a prime Holyfield. Toney must defeat a top Heavyweight in order to be taken seriously.
jenson69 01-26-2005, 12:36 AM If toney isnt that great and has a big mouth and is rated #5 in WBA, WBC, IBF. Then why r the big guns dodging him? Maybe they know something we dont.
GattiFan 01-26-2005, 01:41 AM Tony beat an old holyfield that beat a young Rahman. Tony beat a young Booker with one arm. Tony beats any top ten except Vitali. Who takes him? Golotta the polish nut puncher that fought such a stirring fight against Ruiz? Rahman that couldnt handle Holyfield? Outside of Vitali, a healthy Toney cleans up the division. Wait...Nigel Peter? Did you even watch his last fight? That left hook looks like its being thrown under water.

I couldn't agree with you more. Lets see what happens when he fights a Heavy with some talent. I think James lights will be out.........
