i am a southpaw with decent hand speed, and strong power with the left, and everyone in my gym complains about sparring with a southpaw....when i go to shows they don't like southpaws either....why are so many fighters afraid of southpaws so much when they allow right handers to unload the straight right?

I believe that you are thinking alittle strong when you say that people are afraid to fight left handers. I always had good success against them. They eat the leather the same as anyone else.

The thing with them is that it is not the ordinary fight. Right handed fighters must be taught how to box them and then they must have the sparring to become acclamated with fighting a south paw. So some coaches may/do steer their boys away from then for lack of experience against them. Believe me, its not fear. Its strategy.

well i didn't mean to overstate it as in fear, i guess that came out wrong....its just i have so much trouble finding people who want to spar and fight because of the accomadations of a southpaw

Actually, I'm a southpaw and I actually have a weird time fighting southpaws myself cause I rarely spar with them. Actually it's a pain in the ass cause unless someone in the gym I train a lot with is there everyone has the hardest time holding mits for me or anything. What a pain! But I'm used to holding it for righties but not for lefties.

what about a lefty with a left hand a bit brittle?

I may be in a boxing club sooner but I dont know what to choose more Southpaw or Orthadox.

They should be thankful for the opportunity to train with southpaws. Calzaghe is a lefty. So was Hagler. There is nothing inherently better or worse about lefties, but you figure the lefty is used to constantly fighting righthanders, whereas the orthodox fighter can't possibly see enough southpaws to ever get completely comfortable. Enjoy your advantage and make the most of it....

When I used to box south paws, I always would switch up and start fighting southpaw. It would throw a wrench in whatever works that the had rolling. I agree, that south paws have a hard time fighting other south paws. Me and Gary Stretch had a good throw down at Galaxy back in the day, he was a reigning title holder for a minor belt at the time. I started out right handed and he started cleaning up on me. I switched and it became a brawl type scenario. It works though if you practice it enough.
