View Full Version : 16 to old to start?
RiverCityBoxer 03-04-2006, 02:04 PM I am just getting into boxing and would like to start competitive boxing. I don''t think I'm going to be champion of the world or anything but I keep hearing about all these guys who started boxing when they were like 10. s 16 too old or is it a good age to start competive boxing?
Southpaw Stinger 03-04-2006, 02:10 PM George Foreman started boxing when he was 16! You are still young and can compete as an amateur until you are 35, whether you go pro before or after that is up to you. But as long as you are focussed and train hard then there is no reason not to start.
supaduck 03-04-2006, 03:41 PM Chris Eubank also started when he was 16, and a few world champions have started in their 20's. in other words, 16 is a fine age to start.
LHWchamp5 03-04-2006, 04:07 PM let yourself mature a lil before you start punishing your body, you'll only pay for it in the long run..
yrrej 03-04-2006, 04:32 PM Just depends on your attitude and the quality of your trainer. Tyson didn't start boxing until he was thrown in the juvenile home. Turns out he had a natural aptitude.
machotime 03-04-2006, 04:35 PM Although Kermit Cintron is not a great boxer, he never boxed AT ALL until he was 19.
Biolink 03-04-2006, 07:18 PM LOL well we are two of a kind.I am 16 and I am going to talk to my dad about it.Seems he is supportive enough
16 is a good age to start cause alot of people who did start when they were 10 end up losing their lust for it earlier
LightsOut Le 03-04-2006, 09:56 PM man i think you all forgot someone else...who is still around....
JAMES TONEY
he started in highschool so anywhere around 14-18 you know...

Rockin' 03-04-2006, 11:59 PM 16 is a perfect age to start.
James Toney had one fight when he was younger and then really got into it when he was either 18 or 19. We were fighting out of the same gym back then, had the same trainer and stuff.
I never saw James do all that well as an amatuer. That just goes to show you that you can learn alot still once you turn pro. Watching James win his titles and such was nothing like watching him as an amatuer. That guy got good.
Rockin' :boxing:

Tony Blitz 03-05-2006, 04:07 AM Tyson started at 13 and turned pro at 18, if you start now you can turn pro at 21 with great skills if you have the determination.
