I hadn't sparred for a while and last night I went to a pretty good club and spent the whole night sparring. I got that deep pain in the abdomen which is first horrible then so pleasent when it stops. The in the moment flow came, until I thought of nothing except for the strategy and tactics of beating my opponents. In the first couple rounds, I sharpened up and stopped looking down when heavier blows came. I started to keep my feet underneath me, circle my opponent, move whilst defending and counter immediately after being attacked.

It was such a great feeling I had to tell someone.

I'm going back tonight and I have a couple of questions I'd like to ask.

When I could see my opponent and my guard is tight I felt invincible. It felt like nothing could get through to me. This euphoria cannot be a true reflection of the situation. What should I watch out for when defending? Currently when attacked with a combo, I turtle up for a second and take the initial blow (or slip straight away if I can), start moving inside with slips for body shots, or start to circle and jab whilst covering. I try to stay tight all the time, even when throwing shots and I am absolutely obsessive with keeping the chin tucked (knock out paranoia, which is what led me to keep looking down in the beginning).

At the moment my counters are not true counters. i.e. very few are simultaneous attacks. Altough I do slip and counter at the same time to the body. I find it difficult to do to the head. Is there any special consideration when countering to the head? Is it wise to through combinations when countering? Or does it increase your chance of having your counter, countered?

Finally, I feel so vulnerable to hooks when I through uppercuts in combinations unless my opponent is turtled or I slip a right cross to the left then throw the left uppercut. Am I right to feel so? Or should I restrict my uppercuts to counters until I get a better sense of whats going on?

I am most grateful for any replies that I receive. Thank you for your time in advance.
